Left-Over Space House - Cox Rayner Architects

Completed in 2012, this recycled caretaker’s cottage has been transformed into a clever family home that demonstrates what is possible with limited space. Barely 3 metres wide in places, the property easily caters for parents and two children; boasting all the amenities and comforts expected from such a home.

A connecting bridge functions as a library and connects the living room and kitchen spaces, beyond which lie several bedrooms and a roof deck. Windows provide natural light and viewpoints out into the street but allow for privacy via the use of iron shutters.

Only five metres wide at its largest point, this property is a fantastic achievement in space-saving design and clever site management. See more at: ArchDaily

Wood and steel cabins designed by architecture students at the University of Colorado Denver. Created for a school run by Outward Bound, a nonprofit that uses outdoor experiences to teach leadership skills and boost self-esteem, 14 cabins provide more than just shelter. They are sustainable micro-dormitories devised to connect students with nature, in the heart of the Rocky Mountains.

Each cabin was built on an elevated platform to reduce its environmental impact, with a corrugated metal snow roof to protect the boxy structure from the elements. The wood-and-steel construction means minimal maintenance will be needed to keep up their pristine condition. The cabins measure between 140 and 200 square feet, and were all constructed on-site in just three weeks.

Paperholm began in August 2014 as a daily project by artist Charles Young.

One new object is designed, made, photographed and uploaded each day. All of the models are made using 200gsm watercolour paper and PVA glue. This method allows for rapid construction and exploration of diverse areas of architecture, pushing the possibilities of this single material..Construction paused on completion of the first island after a year of daily additions..

The project continues as of November 2015 with the construction of a series of new islands, through further daily additions, building up to the exhibition of all of the pieces together as a constructed archipelago for the first time in the Autumn of 2016..This continuation of the project is supported by New Media Scotland’s Alt-W Fund with investment from Creative Scotland.
