Season two really stuck the landing with Vaultknight, especially for Maximus specifically.

Maximus starts the season being all in on the Brotherhood. He's decided to make the best of the situation he's in. He's a survivor, that's what he does. When Dane asks about Lucy, Max says "she left". This isn't because Maximus was mad at Lucy, or that he'd lost faith in Lucy, or that he didn't understand the kind of person she is. Maximus is simply speaking as matter-of-fact. Lucy is not here, and he is. He has to survive, that's what he does. He doesn't get to choose her and that life he fantasized about, because Maximus doesn't get choices. Things just happen to him.

Maximus' story continues on, he escapes the Brotherhood, he gets the cold fusion device.

Maximus' next mention of Lucy is a few episodes later, when he says she's a "good person" and decides she's the person he wants to give the most powerful object in the world to because she's the only one he trusts with it.

And with that, without spending a season mooning over her, crying out her name to anyone who would listen, making his entire arc about her, in that brief conversation he reaffirms his admiration for her. Lucy is the best person in the Wasteland. Yes, she left. Maybe they won't get to have that life together. That's not important right now. What's important is he still believes in Lucy and he needs to do the right thing and those two concepts are intrinsically linked in his mind. This is informed by his flashbacks, with the strengthening of his connection to the NCR and his memories of his father. He believes in goodness, and that as his character arc is so linked to his relationship to Lucy without being defined by his relationship to Lucy.

So in the end when they find each other, it's the end of a journey for Max but it wasn't his goal. He wasn't looking for Lucy as reward. He found her at the end if his own story, and she found him at the end of hers, and after all they'd been through they met in the middle, and they found comfort and support at the end of their individual trials. That shot of them walking towards each other from different sides, their two stories finally meeting.

I just really loved that.
