Delaney was fixing her hair in her phoneâs front facing camera when she heard Marie comment on a missing cardigan. She didnât say anything - it wasnât her business - until the girl spoke again and she couldnât help herself. âWell, thatâs an escalation if I ever heard one,â she murmured. It seemed unlikely that someone would bother stealing a cardigan of all things, no matter how expensive it was. And based on a brief glance over Marieâs clothes and panic, it was expensive. âJeez. No, I didnât see the âdelinquentâ.â It was a physical effort not to roll her eyes. She examined herself once more on the phone before switching it off and turning to Marie with a sigh. Okay, so she felt a little bad for her. âWhereâd you last see it? Are you sure itâs not in your room or something?â She prodded, aiming for a gentle tone.
She was more than a little rattled. Marie could barely hear the woman, and didnât respond to her comment about a perfectly reasonable escalation. She was instead focused on her bag, under the table, the decorative flora behind her- nowhere. Her stomach was locked tight. âI thought... I brought it with me here,â but did she? It was so hard to remember. She put so much thought into her clothing, she would switch it around piece by piece to conserve some semblance of wardrobe diversity. Maybe the cardigan didnât make the cut today. Opening the possibilities up that much made Marie sway and sit, silent for once as she tried so hard to focus on todayâs events. She didnât feel all too ladylike now. She then felt coddled. No, embarrassed by her own actions but the gentle tone was belittling. âIf I knew where I last saw it, Iâd be looking there. I last saw it here,â which wasnât a fact. She ran her hands through her hair; exasperated as she collected her things to try to start a scavenger hunt.

âIâve never been to paris! Iâve only seen pictures. The pictures alone are beautiful. Whatâs paris like?â reagan asked, beaming like the actual sun as she walked with the blonde. âmhm! iâm shopping for Eugene and Cass. I thought about getting my parents something but I donât be visiting Corona anytime soon so I would hate to give them their gift late.â
âOh my god, Paris...â it was really just being there. It was like any other city, but to describe the fashion capital of the world in such a way would diminish it. The chance to embellish pounced upon Marie and she couldnât resist. âItâs as beautiful as the pictures- maybe even more than,â she hummed a little as she swayed, missing home rather dearly. âThe food is amazing, the shopping is incredible too if you know where to go,â she paused, giving more thought to who she was talking about than she felt was appropriate. âWho are they? Think youâll find anything here?â She looked up at the generic gift shop curiously, as sheâd never give that place the time of day with a platinum in her clutch.

âIâm Oliver,â he introduced with a charming smile. âThere, not much of a stranger anymore, am I? I even promise Iâll behave.â Okay, he can never really promise heâll behave, but whatever got him out of sight of the people who were looking for him he was willing to say. âUh, oneâs mad I showed up at his girlfriendâs dorm - all I wanted was to give her back the notes I borrowed. But he got all worked up and got his friend to come with him to come after me. Itâs all a little ridiculous, I know.â
âWe arenât strangers anymore... You know, Iâve heard that line so many times,â Marie giggled a little, knowing that this was a little different than those times. She had a feeling he was lying about being entirely innocent of wrongdoing. âFine, Oliver, though I doubt circling back to the dorms is a good idea if thatâs where the neanderthals are coming from," she glanced over in that direction before shrugging gently. "There are other places, I suppose."

It was telling that Aurora hadnât noticed the girlâs distress right off the bat. Granted, that was often the case when it came to her attention span: fleeting and distant and often just out of reach. Just like most other times before, sheâd been doodling flowers in the margins of her notebook, far too distracted by her pleasant reveries until Marieâs growing urgency jolted her out of the dreamy mind space sheâd drifted off to. A pity that was, though her disappointment was all but gone the moment her gaze took in the girlâs panicked demeanor. âOh no. Iâm afraid I didnât see a thing.â A ghost of a frown flitted across her face like a passing breeze, the guilt of having potentially missed any clues out of sheer distraction weighing on her for mind for a moment before being pushed aside. After all, she would undoubtedly be more helpful with a clear mind, and Aurora preferred to avoid lingering on such negative emotions. âBut maybe I could help you look? Surely it couldnât have gone too far, wherever it is. What does it look like, exactly?â
âIt could have gone far if it grew legs and scurried over to the only pawn shop in this place,â Marie murmured urgently as she looked up at the other. Flighty would be a good word to describe her gaze; probably how the culprit got away so quickly. She wanted to blame her for it, as it always felt good to shift the blame the second culpability was felt. With her brothers, sheâd be yelling for mothers intervention-- she would find out who took her stuff. This was a SCHOOL though full of jealous peers who would take it from her just for her bragging about it. âItâs... white and thigh length, knitted cashmere with a belt,â it was too hot for the weather but she endured; until foolishly taking it off. Marie was beside herself as she roughly searched through her belongings, coming up empty handed and all the more rattled.
zoinkshaggy·:
Shaggy about jumped out of his skin when he heard someone speak to him â heâd been in his own world, like just about always, and hadnât even noticed anyone was standing nearby. âN-no. I was just here with Scoob. Like, we didnât see any cart hen or whatever. At least, I didnât. He probably didnât either. Iâm n-not a thief.â Shit, why did he even say that? Now he looked suspicious. Making him look even more suspicious, he shifted from one foot to the other, then again, rubbing the back of his neck with the hand that wasnât connected to his Great Daneâs leash. âLike, I-I swear, man.â
âCardigan, dude itâs like, a cardigan,â she said mockingly before running her hands through her hair to try, just try, to relieve a little stress. Her heart was pounding as she dipped down to search under the table. She turned around, spinning like a top to search the flora behind her. âI donât think youâre a thief I think youâre grossly ignorant to your surroundings,â said the woman with the missing cardigan. âI also think I lost a cardigan worth more than some peoples tuition.âÂ
laurenchadwell·:
Gritting her teeth at the exchange, she couldnât help but roll her eyes at the girl who just stormed away from her, but when she saw the little peek of a cardigan from her bag, she couldnât help but speed-walk to her side. âYou know, you didnât check your bag.â She says kindly, âI think I saw a white sleeve hanging freely⊠so before we hunt for someone⊠just check.â
âNot to sound rude but your suggestions are offensive,â she said as she walked briskly, but when she mentioned a white sleeve she paused and pulled her bag up to take a look. âOh,â she muttered. Her face flushed with embarrassment but her heart could finally rest. Relief won out. âThank you.â she said with a little reluctance to the stranger.
oliversspade·:
âNo, no! Not at all!â answered Oliver, who was definitely a criminal, with the innocent eyes he was so good at conjuring up. âSome guys are threatening to fight me over a complete misunderstanding. Please, hide me? Iâm not the type of guy who wants any trouble, I promiseâŠâ That was also a lie, but he masked it well.
She believed every word, having no reason to question his seemingly sincere tone. Instead of focusing on poking holes in his story with questions, she instead laughed at their lack of options. âThe only place I can host you is my dorm, and itâs not very ladylike to invite strangers there- especially not men of ambiguous circumstances,â she hummed in thought. âWhy do they want to fight you?â

âWe have a few prizes already, thankfully â we started planning the raffle about a month ago, but then it got put on hold. Thereâs a really pretty homemade wreath, a couple of gift cards and the main prize is a Kindle. We could definitely use more, of course, but Iâve been focused on trying to get all the details down. I have to figure out where to host this thing so I can spread the news, and it needs to be done on Christmas Eve, so we haveâŠâ Pulling out her phone, she checked the date and did a quick count. âJust over a week. I would appreciate anything you could do. Even if itâs just hanging up a couple of flyers. I may have bit off more than I can chew this time.âÂ
âHanging flyers,â she repeated with a hint of disappointment. She was quick to stamp it out. Nobody started at the top, despite the fact that there didnât really seem to be a hierarchy in this dynamic. âConsider this place plastered by the end of the day,â sheâd have help from some eager friends of hers. She smiled wide now, the idea of a Christmas Eve charity gala sounded right up her street. And puppies! âI have an iPhone,â she said slowly. She wasnât one to give up her possessions, especially when she thought about selling it, but she had no plans to buy for anyone. Well, that was sad. âYou could use it as a prize? Still in the package I ordered two my mistake a while ago,â She didn't feel warm about giving up the potentially valuable device but really she wasn't about to try to sell it.
laurenchadwell·:
Wrinkling her nose as she turned her head, Lauren could tell the girl in front of her was obviously distressed, though she noticed that she was obviously still wearing a shirt. âWell, thereâs delinquents everywhere around here,â she says simply, âand youâre still wearing a shirt, so I donât think making a missing sign for it would be appropriate.â She notes, though sheâs sure sheâs not making it any better ââŠdid you at least check the restroom?â
âI would never leave it in the restroom,â she replied curtly, with offense to the implication. âI draped it on the back of my chair and some hooligan with grabby hands stole it. It wonât be hard to find; unless they try to sell it--â most people didnât care about the value of clothes but what if? She didnât sell it herself for funds out of an unwillingness to give up what she had. Having it stolen was a great offense to her. âItâs a cardigan,â she snapped as her eyes scanned the hall with determination. She swept up her bag; the sleeve of the missing garment hanging from it as she stormed dramatically down the hall without a second look a the girl who implied she would leave it in a restroom. She wanted to find it and had to do so before class.

âItâs for the shelter I volunteer at. Everyone else was too busy to put anything together, but if we donât keep donations flowing we hit a point where we canât help anymore, so I stupidly was like âoh, donât worry, Iâve got this and they, even stupider, believed me. So now weâre- well, Iâm throwing together a Christmas raffle to raise money to cover adoption fees.â She stopped talking long enough to inhale. âYou would do that? Are you sure you arenât too busy with the holidays?â
For a moment when the woman said shelter she thought she meant a homeless shelter, or a place where they put the elderly. Her pursed expression softened barely when she mentioned adoption fees. Animals. That was an easy sell. âI would love to help,â Marie said with very little pause. When it came to the holidays, she still didnât know if she was going home. Things had gotten so tense between herself and her family that staying in the school and helping with this minor thing seemed like the best option. âI may even be able to secure some donations!â While she would never use her online following to raise funds for herself, she could justify it for a cause. âSo... a raffle; any ideas on prizes?â
do you think iâm broken?
fawneverwould·:
âYou would not believe how much planning goes into charity events. I mean, Iâve done, what, a hundred over the last few years? But this is the first one Iâve tried on my own, and I am stressed beyond belief. But itâs fine, Iâm fine, itâs all good.â
âOh-- Youâre doing a charity event?â Marie leaned around the person she may have been talking to, hoping to introduce herself. She loved having a hand in events. Shopping no longer took up her idle hours so she was desperate for something to do. âIf you are looking for help, I would be happy to lend a hand. I am an incredible party planner.â
âMy cardigan is missing,â Marie murmured; quietly at first as her nervy blue eyes darted across the recreation hall. It was expensive. On sale, it was over four thousand dollars. Had this been the old days with her platinum get out of jail free visa, she would have cut it as a loss and bought a better one. Now though, her hands searched her bag desperately for the soft white cardigan. Her eyes were burning while her face grew hot, both embarrassed that such a loss was so weighted, and that she lost it in the first place. Or, âSomebody stole my shirt,â she said, more urgently now as her gaze of loss and mourning turned to a more easy to digest fit of anger. âDid you see the delinquent?â
oliversspade·:
âHey, can you hide me for a second?â asked Oliver, out of breath as he panted out the question.
âHide you? Why on earth would I hide you? Are you a criminal?â She took a step back and was ready to call for the authorities at the top of her lungs, hoping they were in hot pursuit, but he didnât look too dangerous. âWhat are you hiding from?â
