spaceman by the killers is one of the best and most impactful uses of extended metaphor in songwriting in recent history change my mind u cant

i never in a million years would have thought up using an alien abduction as an extended metaphor for a suicide attempt. it’s so creative and brilliant in such a horrifically sad way. and it’s FUN, and that might be the saddest part. every element carries such an emotionally weighted double meaning and it all Works. there aren’t any places where the metaphor feels too heavy-handed or inconsistent. this is true for all of the lyrics, but the second pre-chorus is my favorite example:

finding a way to articulate that despondence and loneliness in the aftermath of an attempt through such a vibrant and unconventional metaphor is an immensely difficult task and this song executes it so well.

the other thing is that the imagery and structure and sound is great on its own. like u could say that this is just a song about aliens and it would still be a really well-written track, but the disparity between the colorful imagery / upbeat sound and its heavy subject matter is what elevates it completely.

there are a lot of effective songs about suicidal ideation that communicate that experience through the conventional tone, diction, etc. you would expect when discussing it—i don’t want to diminish that at all. i just think spaceman is a phenomenal example of just how impactful a carefully crafted extended metaphor can be.
