Figures that out of all of the strangers she could have approached that night, she’d gone and picked the one guy who just so happens to be in a rock band that’s on the brink of blowing up.

Summary: Luke takes up a lot of space in and around her on a good day. It’s something Julie’s always found to be a bit overwhelming. Summary: “Not yet,” she pleads. “Just ten more minutes and I’ll go to bed— I really think we can crack this bridge if we power through.”

And Luke’s never been good at saying no to her. It’s something he’d discovered fairly early on in their interesting little relationship. So he’s not even surprised when his hands, as if on their own accord, open the song book in his lap, and quickly flip back over to the page they’d been working on before he’d shut it.

“Whatever you say, Boss,”

OR... One time Julie falls asleep in the middle of a late night writing session and slips right through Luke’s shoulder, and one time she doesn’t.

'I Don't Know How You Take Your Coffee'

Lady Whistledown’s Guide to Permission Statements

Dearest Gentle Reader,

Some of the most spectacular works of art are inspired by others. In fact, the art we in fandom create every day is inspired by and based on work not truly our own. This author is certain you are well acquainted with writing fanfiction, however, she wishes to take this moment to educate you on the wonders of Permission Statements.

A permission statement is a public statement that declares whether you, the author, accepts transformative works made using your personal work! These include, but are not limited to, podfics, translations, fanart, remixes and recursive works, fanbinds, etc. Your statement can specify which transformative works you allow and which you do not. If you wish to allow all transformative works, you may even opt for a Blanket Permission Statement.

For instance, this author gives blanket permission for most fanworks, such as podfics, translations, and fanart so long as my work is properly attributed; though I do not allow remixes and recursive works and require a creator ask before creating a fanbind. This author’s blanket permission statement also prohibits the use of generative AI in transformative works made from my creations.

When it comes to matters such as these, a common question may be: why? Why should an author have a permission statement?

Permission statements make the lives of other creators easier by far! Some podficcers, translators, or fanartists may be shy, anxious, or otherwise hesitant to approach authors on their own, and these statements help make it easier for creators to find authors who are willing to allow these works to be made. Though these statements cannot guarantee such gifts, they do make it more likely that a kind, gentle soul will bring new life to your incredible work through work of their own

Reader, if you are an author who is even remotely willing to have their works podficced, or fanart created of your work, or your work translated, etc., I cannot recommend these statements enough.

It is simple, dear reader. Update your Ao3 profile and make your preferences known. Podficcers, fanartists, and translators will give you their thanks.

With one final brush to his bruised cheekbone, Penelope leans in and presses a soft kiss against the injury there, too. Colin swallows hard, breathing her name out with a sort of reverence that makes her own breath catch in her throat. “Are you planning to kiss all of my bruises away?” He rasps. “Perhaps I am. But only if…” “If…?” “Only if you tell me where else it hurts,” she whispers back. -- OR -- Penelope patches Colin up after he gets into a fight defending her honor

I started this one shot sometime between when we got the trailer and when the first half of season 3 dropped and then life got in the way so I had to shelve it. Happy to have finally gotten around to finising it though as i've been wanting to play around with writing Polin for a while now. So consider this my practice run-- a way to warm up and dust off the cobwebs, if you will-- before I try my hand at something longer! Hope you enjoy reading!

Some days, Colin’s thoroughly convinced that he’ll never love anything as much as he loves travel. That no other feeling will ever measure up to one he only ever gets when he sets foot in lands thousands of miles away from the only home he’s ever known. But then, he kisses Penelope Featherington. And suddenly every notion he’s ever had about love absolutely pales in comparison. — OR — A glimpse into Colin's thoughts for season 3, episodes 1-4, with an alternate love confession at the end as a little treat.

EXCERPT:

Perhaps if he’d unburdened the truth of his feelings— if he’d told her that his heart was hers to fill or burst, to keep or toss aside, to do with whatever she thought fit— then she’d still be standing right in front of him. Instead, Colin is forced to watch on as Penelope catches up to Debling. He can see them from even down below where he’s still rooted to the same spot, his jaw clenching involuntarily when he sees Penelope offer the other man an encouraging smile.  Part of him doesn’t think he can stomach the sight of the woman he loves accepting a proposal from another. But the other part of him that already aches is the part of him that won’t let him look away. If he’s going to have his heart broken by Penelope Featherington either way, he might as well make sure it’s done thoroughly.

i’m going to say something that might make me seem ungrateful, but i think it’s true of many fic writers:

we want you to leave comments ON ao3.

we’re not angry or disappointed or anything like that when you leave qrts or lots of tags on our fic posts, not at all. we don’t NOT want you to message us to tell us how a fic touched you. but in addition to that, please consider just copying those words and posting them on ao3 as a comment.

why?

the reason is simple: leaving commentary in other places is ephemeral. story posts get pushed down. chats get pushed down in the list of chats, or worse, pushed up in lists of messages as the conversation continues. but comments on ao3 are easily accessible. and this is important because writers read and reread these comments regularly.

writing, especially writing longfics, is exhausting and drains your confidence over time. having a collection of people who enjoyed your past work at your fingertips is an excellent way to build yourself up when you’re feeling down. fic writers need this a lot.

i know over the past few years there’s this trend to be very descriptive with what is an “acceptable” comment. that’s all nonsense, as long as you’re not being an asshole, just say what’s on your heart.

but post it on ao3. please.

Also something I see a lot: people gushing to their friends in discord about a fic but not commenting on it to the author themselves. It’s reassuring to find out secondhand that people gushed about your creation, but it’s so much better when someone tells you directly! Reaching out directly on AO3 also helps to curb any lingering doubt of like… Is this something they’d only admit to in private but don’t want their name connected to mine on AO3? Since there’s a lot of weirdness around who someone associates with in fandom these days

I will say also that some of my FAVORITE comments I have EVER gotten were copy-and-paste Discord conversations, like that is PURE! JOY!!! If you ever find yourself gushing about a fic in a server and everyone else in the conversation is cool with it, PLEASE copy and past that into an AO3 comment, you will make an author’s YEAR.
