life is so much better after a piece. of toast

cut out my eyes and ears, break my nose and tear my tongue clean from my mouth

i would remember how your scent lingers in a hallway, and the sound of your heavy footsteps down a staircase

i would visualize your eyes as they became lidded with tired joy, and the taste of coffee being shared at the cafe down the street

and even if i forgot all those things eventually, and the memory of your presence blurs together until it fades away completely into watercolor

i would feel the warmth of your body

as if you were still next to me

they should invent a place where i belong
