Word Land

Project from Cai Yuli is a collection of interactive 3D word maps applying Machine Learning to movie scripts:

How can human language be shaped into a virtual sculpture, a word land, through the help of machine language? Taking movie scripts from some Oscar 2018 movies, I transform all the words from the script into a 80 dimensions space and later reduce it to 3 dimensions and put it into a virtual visual world. Each movie has their own word sculpture.

Supervised Machine Learning Trainer 3607A

Speculative Design video short from Benedict Hubener, Keyur Jain, and James Zhou of CIID imagines how the future of Smart City maintenence works, with on-site engineers handling Machine Learning equipment with surveillance infrastructure:

In the near future, cities are filled with smart infrastructure such as decentralized security cameras, self-sorting trashcans and intelligent street lights. But who do you call when smart things breaks? The future smart city is not a sci-fi dystopia made out of glass, concrete, and job stealing robots. It’s place much like our own and filled with the banality of everyday life and mundane jobs. Regardless of how you imagine the future smart city, someone needs to get in their white van, take out their ladder, and fix broken things.

The SMLT 3607A or Supervised Machine Learning Trainer is a tool for the future city maintenance worker. He/she can use the SMLT to interface with abnormally behaving smart infrastructure such as a surveillance camera identifying people as eggplants. He/she can retrain the smart camera by recording new examples in real time. The future maintenance worker will teach the camera what it’s seeing and curator the training dataset. He/she will help the camera learn the difference between people and objects and decide who should be classified as an upstanding citizen or a petty criminal.

How Computer Vision Is Finally Taking Off, After 50 Years

Computer vision is fascinating to me because a) it sounds intriguing and b) it’s a part of so many different things we use today (augmented reality, image search, Google Photos, cameras, those yellow first down lines we see watching football on TV, self-driving cars, selfie lenses, and more.) Light Field Video Capture Using a Learning-Based Hybrid Imaging System

Computational Photography research from UC Berkeley and UC San Diego have developed system of capturing Light Field video allowing editing of depth, position and focus:

Light field cameras have many advantages over traditional cameras, as they allow the user to change various camera settings after capture. However, capturing light fields requires a huge bandwidth to record the data: a modern light field camera can only take three images per second. This prevents current consumer light field cameras from capturing light field videos. Temporal interpolation at such extreme scale (10x, from 3 fps to 30 fps) is infeasible as too much information will be entirely missing between adjacent frames. Instead, we develop a hybrid imaging system, adding another standard video camera to capture the temporal information. Given a 3 fps light field sequence and a standard 30 fps 2D video, our system can then generate a full light field video at 30 fps. We adopt a learning-based approach, which can be decomposed into two steps: spatio-temporal flow estimation and appearance estimation. The flow estimation propagates the angular information from the light field sequence to the 2D video, so we can warp input images to the target view. The appearance estimation then combines these warped images to output the final pixels. The whole process is trained end-to-end using convolutional neural networks. Experimental results demonstrate that our algorithm outperforms current video interpolation methods, enabling consumer light field videography, and making applications such as refocusing and parallax view generation achievable on videos for the first time.

Project from Yedan Qian and Xin Liu is a virtual reality experience where you can become a tree, and provides sense of tactility through Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS):

TreeSense is a sensory VR system that transforms a person into a tree, from a seedling to its full-size form, to its final destiny. The person experiences what it feels like to be a tree by seeing and feeling her arms turning into branches and her body into a trunk. To evoke these sensations, we put electrodes at several key locations on the user’s forearms to stimulate muscles and the skin, so that she can feel branches growing, a worm crawling, or a bird landing on her arm. This intimate, visceral experience dramatically creates an illusion of being a different life form, and thus develops a personal, immediate identification with a need of environmental protection.

Interactive art exhibition by So Kanno and yang02 is a collection of familiar objects that can be remotely controlled online through your web browser:

For this installation, So Kanno + yang02 composed all kinds of differently sized objects, including a telephone, a traffic cone, a plaster figure, a car, and a plant. Cameras, microphones, monitors and microcomputers are embedded in everyday objects arranged in the exhibition space, and connected to the Internet. Visitors can experience the work by logging in to / “riding” each object via a web browser. Those objects exist as substitutes of – yet together with – real human beings (the visitors) in the same real environment that is subject to physical laws, rather than operating in a virtual space. Against the backdrop of the age of IoT, where all kinds of things are connected through networks, and artificial intelligence is about to mature, this work observes the new relationships that emerge when inorganic, non-autonomous objects transform into persons that act and perceive the world according to their own intentions.
