Snowflakes drifted lazily from the sky, melting on Durin’s dark scales as he padded alongside you. Even in his small, re-hatched form, barley taller than your waist- he walked with careful steps of someone trying very hard to be good.
You nudged him with your elbow.
Durin blinked, pupils wide and soft as moonlit ink. "No. The snow feels...curious." he lowered his head and stuck out his tongue, catching a flake. "IT tastes like clouds."
You laughed. "Close enough."
Today was Lesson Number Three of 'how humans work.' Durin took these lessons very seriously; you suspected he'd start taking notes soon if you didn't stop him.
"Y/n," he said gravely, "you promised to explain why humans live in houses instead of caves."
"I did." You gestured toward the quiet village ahead, smoke curling from chimneys. "Humans build homes because we're not as tough as dragons. We need shelter from weather and a safe place to rest."
Durin nodded, as if filing the information into a little mental book titled 'important things y/n says.'
"Then...humans are soft." He says with a tilted head.
"Very soft," you agreed. "Like bread."
He stopped. "I must protect bread."
You froze for half a second..then snorted.
"That's not exactly what I meant."
Durin huffed proudly. "I will stoll protect bread."
You rubbed your forehead. Somewhere, a baker in Mondstadt was about to find their shop guarded by a very determined dragon.
As you walled, he matched his pace to yours-slow, careful, almost dainty. He always did that, though he tried to pretend he didn't.
"Another question," he said. "What is laughter? Humans do it a lot."
He watches your face as though waiting to catch the moment you demonstrated it.
"Well," you began considering, "laughter is..when something makes your heart feel light. When you're happy."
Durin looked thoughtful. He lifted his head, tried to copy the expression you used when you laughed-eyes squinting, mouth upturned, a little huff of breath.
It was...terrible. absolutely terrible.
You burst our laughing anyway.
Durin perks up. "Like thag?"
You reached up and brushed the snow from between his horns. He leaned into your palm instinctively-warm, trusting, a little too big to be a lap creature but still convinced he was.
"Y/n.." He murmured. "I like learning about humans."
"Yes." He leaned on his tippy toes so your foreheads touched-his warm, yours cold "because you are one."
Your breath caught; the words were simple, but the meaning wasn't.
You smiled, resting your hand on his head gently patting him.
"Well then, we'll learn everything together. All at your pace."
You smiled, resting a hand on his snout.
Durins tail curled around your leg, as gently as a dragon possibly could.
"Then...today," he declared, "I will learn about bread."
"Oh no," you groan, but he was already bouncing-yes, bouncing towards the village.
You hurried after him, laughing as snow flurried in his wake.
And durin, a short dragon of storms and shadows, turned back to look at you with a smile that made even winter feel warm.
