Why Kyouya was suprised at Benkeis hug

I just rewatched the scene in first season episode 11, where Kyouya is hugged by Benkei and acts surprised

Here are some reasons why he acts that surprised:

- He just tried to hurt Benkei, who would except to get hugged then by said person? - It was shown that before that situation (before episode 11), Benkei was acting more respectful around Kyouya and has not made any hugging attempt from what we have seen - Afterwards Kyouya acts Kyo-like to Benkei's hug attempts - rejecting him, but not surprised anymore. So it was just the very first hug that surprised him, and my points explain why - He was also not shocked as Gingka hugged him and Hyouma, just mildly surprised and a not very confident "Stop it" (he could have so easily get out of that hug XD). Probably since he knows Gingka's personality and wasnt as surprised, indicating that Benkei really just started acting like that after episode 11 battle - Kyouya just wakes up, confused where he is and immediately gets hugged - he is also still confused by where the f*** he is and what happened - he doesnt react much and isnt surprised for long - no real signs of trauma response - He hesistanly puts an arm around Benkei, like in a for me polite way - not rejecting the hug and just going politely with it - He instantly moves on and doesnt think much about the hug and the focus is more on what they are talking aout than their phyisical contact - He even more surprised by Madoka repairing his Leone and afterwards claiming he is their enemy, questioning why they doing that all for him (so that is probably the biggest reason for his surprise)

I have to confess I kinda like this scene. I mean, Kyouya is basically freaking out, trying to destroy everything, but when Ginga tries to calm him down with words, he takes the time to answer. Plus, quite childishly xD

And then :

“Ginga ! How dare you ?!”

Not like Nile was the first one to intervene. No. Kyouya only saw Ginga (like usual).

Instead of answering, Kyo just states his special move and instead of „How dare you“, he says „Gingka, teme!“ which is an extremely rude way to refer to someone. You could translate it as „Gingka, you bastard!“ Teme is one of the rudest way to refer to someone (only beaten by kisama) and means someone is really furious at you . And he says it really surprised and shocked. And he keeps referring to Gingka as „teme“ during the conversation which follows.

At their first battle Kyo referred to Gin as „Kisama“ (the worst possible way to refer to someone). So technically Kyo could have used an even worse word, but might have not wanted to call Gin that.

(Gin always refers to Kyo as „Omae“, in Japan it is an informal way of addressing other and used between close people and viewed as disrespectful if used for someone not close…but since this is a Shounen anime, it is the norm, since those don’t work by that law XD and a lot of characters in the show refer to each other as „Omae“. Gin even uses „Omae“ with Daudouj…and with Ryūga even, expect for the moment when he got furious during his first battle with Ryūga, he addressed him as „Kisama“. That is an impressive change, considering he has never disrespectfully addressed anyone else before and he only started addressing Ryūga that way, after he has made fun of Gingka‘s father. )

At their second fateful battle Kyo also addresses Gin with „Kisama“, but afterwards (starting episode 12, invading Dark Nebula), he uses „Omae“ with Gin.

Episode 108, during their short fight, after both Kyo and Gin lost to Ryūga, Kyo also addresses Gin as „teme“. After he has calmed down, he switches to „Omae“ again. (Kyo refers to Ryūga constantly as teme).

It is funny how casually Kyo uses „Kisama“ in the beginning, but never steps that low again (My memory doesn’t cover if he ever uses it with someone else), and decides to not call Gin that again

Episode 25 - who knows Kyouya best

When Kyouya is fighting Captain Capri, we are entitled with Ginga’s and Madoka’s remarks. Of course, it incites to compare their reactions.

When they notice Kyouya is taking part in the  tournament

Madoka is shown in the B-Pit, fixing beys and half-listening to tournaments. She draws her attention back on the screen and we see her surprise.

Ginga isn’t shown right away. We see first a public screen, showing the participants and Kyouya among them. Ginga stops, turning his back to us, and looks at Kyouya. The perspective gives the impression the rivals are facing each other. Then we see Ginga’s face.

1. Kyouya wins easily against his opponent

Madoka, happily : Well done. There just aren’t a lot of bladers that are at Kyouya’s level in the competition. So this tournament should definitively be a cakewalk.

We don’t see or hear Ginga.

2. Captain Capri’s appearance

Madoka : He’s opposite to the wild Kyouya because he calculates things so we better be careful with him.

Ginga : Wow. He’s interesting. Just keep your head up Kyouya.

Madoka worries because of the difference between Tobio’s and Kyouya’s way to battle. Ginga, otherwise, sees right away the same thing that Kyouya : Tobio is an interesting challenger. He’s happy for his rival.

3. Captain Capri’s new moves

Madoka : It’ll be near impossible for Kyouya to guess Capricorn’s moves now !

Ginga : So what are you gonna do ?

Madoka becomes anxious, not even able to remain seated while Ginga is perfectly calm and only wonder how Kyouya will win, because he doesn’t doubt it.

4. Kyouya lets Tobio attacks him

Madoka  : Why doesn’t he attack ? Kyouya never gives up no matter what is going on.

Ginga : Kyouya… you’re up to something. You’ve planned this all along…

Madoka has the impression Kyouya is giving up but, on the other side, she knows it’s not in his character. The opposite impressions confuse her. Contrary to her, Ginga is smiling. He understands right away that Kyouya has something in mind, despite not knowing exactly what. Still more important, he understands Kyouya had led Tobio exactly where he wanted.

5. After the fight

Ginga : Pushing himself right to the edge. That’s Kyouya all over.

Madoka : Wouah ! I’m exhausted just from watching.

There, we have Ginga’s reaction first, then Madoka’s (the reverse order of their interventions during the whole episode). Ginga’s smiling and relaxed because he didn’t doubt once Kyouya risked to loose. He’s even telling this behavior is pure Kyouya way. Madoka is worn out because she didn’t stop worrying during Kyouya’s and Tobio’s duel.

The usefulness of the remarks

Ginga’s and Madoka’s remarks aren’t useful for the scenario’s progression. They are only useful for character relationship. They show to the spectator that Ginga understands Kyouya and his way of thinking. He translates his actions into words, believe in his skills to beat his opponent. Madoka doesn’t know Kyouya as much : she’s worried about him because he is a part of her inner circle, but she doesn’t succeed to guess his thoughts or understands his actions.

These scenes highlight something hinted since the Wolf Canyon episodes : how easily Ginga and Kyouya understand each other. Ginga succeeds to reach out to Kyouya during their fight (episode 10). Kyouya guesses how they should treat Ginga after his defeat against Ryuuga (episode 14). Ginga understands what Kyouya implies when he lectures Benkei and Kenta, while Benkei (though he knows Kyouya for longer) doesn’t (episode 19)… All of this leading to Ginga saying he knows Kyouya better than anyone during Fury (episode 105).

In this episode, there is another big difference between Ginga and Madoka : Ginga talks to Kyouya, like his rival could hear him (knowing them, it’s perfectly possible xD), while Madoka talks about him. It shows there is less emotional distance between Ginga and Kyouya than between Madoka and Kyouya.

In the original Japanese version:

1. Madoka: As one would expect. Well, there aren't many Bladere at Kyouya's level anyway. This tournament will probably be a walk in the park

2.Madoka: An intellectual Blader, in contrast to Kyouya's wildness. He needs to be approached carefully.

- Okay, Kyo is wild af, but he also pretty intelligent. He likes to attack, but also use his brain in battle. Don't assume he might be in trouble just because his opponent is smart, we are talking about someone who has told in said battle that he has already analyzed all of the movements Capricorne is capable of.

2.Gingka: He's an interesting guy. Don't let your guard down, Kyouya.

- Okay, Gin is worried too. Though his face says not too much, he is more interested about the opponent (if Kyo heard that, he would have showed straight away that he is the more interesting blader in that battle)

3.Madoka: With this, even Kyouya won't be able to read his attacks!

- Here it's not near impossible. It is deemed pretty much impossible by Madoka

3.Gingka: What are you going to do, Kyouya?

- Gingka is pretty absorbed in the match now, wondering how it will end

4.Madoka: Why aren't you attacking? There's no way you'd give up now...

4.Gingka: Kyouya...you're having fun, aren't you? You're enjoying driven into a corner like that.

- That some difference to the dub. Gin doesn't say Kyo has had a plan all along, but that he is enjoying himself. And he seems to like watching Kyo having fun while beyblading. And that is most important right now and no way Kyo gonna lose if he has the time of his life. And Gin even knows what exactly Kyo liked about the situation - being driven into a corner.

5.Madoka: Whew! Just watching this wears me out...

Tsubasa’s dark side from a psychological point of view

Tsubasa has had a great character arc in the second season. His figth with Ryuuga has done some damage to him, the dark power is still within him and shows itself when Tsubasa is about to lose a battle. What is really interesting here, is how his situation is portrayed as an mental illness called dissociative identity disorder.

 If some of you are not familiar with that psychological illness : After a person faces extreme trauma (mostly in their childhood), their mind creates in respond another (or more) personality(s) to cope with the experience. Those other personalities are extreme forms of specific characteristics (for example, one can have a depressed personality who always speaks badly of themselves and another one, who is always optimistic or only cares about themselves). Those different personlities switch if faced with « triggers », a stimulation which reminds said person of a traumatic experience.

New personalities are formed to cope with the trauma, as said before, there are many different ways of how the personalities can turn out and deal with the current situation.

In Tsubasa’s case, his other personality (Let’s call him „Protective Tsubasa“) tries to get what Tsubasa wants : Victory. Whenever Tsuabsa alone cannot win a battle, Protective Tsubasa shows up and acts a lot more selfish and self-willed in an attempt to win. Whatever it takes. Tsubasa’s mind created a « Protector », a personality that is selfish, confident and does what it wants, but with a certain goal in mind. A goal in connection with the traumatic event. A goal to proetct Tsubasa from being hurt again.

 Protective Tsubasa’s goal is to win, winning means that the traumatic experience (in this case, being defeated by Ryuuga in a gruesome way) will be avoided. We have also seen that Tsubasa has already had some winning/loosing issues in his childhood, which might explain better why his mind chose this specfic coping mechanism : Because he has carried the struggles of losing for a long time, because he has been frustrated by that for a long time and couldn’t achieve his goal in the very end. Therefore, Protective Tsubasa might have been created way earlier, Protective Tsubasa himself said that he has been around for a long amount of time. That explains better why Tsubasa reacts in this way to his defeat by Ryuuga. The dark power brings out the fears of people, their worst sides.

 Since Tsubasa’s DID is co-conscious (being aware of what is going on, no amnesia), he is able to talk with Protective Tsubasa, who tries to take control. He also gives reasons as why he acts the way he does and reminding Tsubasa of his past, that he has always been a dark person. That kind of behavior can relalistcally happen to real people with DID, their other personalities might try to take control, each one has their own point of view of how to handle things and in the end, tries to prevent further harm, no matter the price sometimes.

 For those with DID, who go to therapy, the aim is so „associate“, to become one personality again. Therefore, cooperation with the other personalities is inevitable, to see their point of view and make them realize that things are different now. That there is no reason to be afraid of the traumatic event happening again, that they do not need to be on guard all time.

 In the end, Tsubasa accepts his dark side, but also his light side. He accepts that he has both potentials inside himself, he associantes, seeing himself as one person again, with different kinds of shades. The ideal way would be to give more attention to Protective Tsubasa and work more with him, but well, this is an anime for children, we cannot accept a whole therapy session.

Metal Fight Beyblade Openings and Endings interpretation

This is going to be an interpretation of how the original openings and endings present the relationship of Tategami Kyouya and Hagane Gingka. If any of you read this post and disagree with my thoughts, please do not hate on me, we are all intellegent beings that can discuss a topic without insulting one another.

Season 1 opening: In the first opening, Gingka is mostly shown with Kenta and Madoka, his close friends, you can read no relationship between Gingka and Kyoyua in this opening, which isn’t surprising, since it is the first season and with that the beggining of their relationship. But before the actual opening, a frame in which all bladers are being shown...

Kyouya and Kenta stand next to Gingka. Kenta is clear, he is Gingka’s friend, but Kyouya deserves this position beause of another reason: Because of his rivalry. His focus on Gingka is also pointed out. While all the other characters look at us viewers, Kyouya’s eyes are directed at Gingka. He is the only character in this scene who is doing that, which could mean that his relationship with Gingka is more special than the relationships of other character and it also shows his constant focus on Gingka. So the first opening only shows little KyoGin, but still makes it stand out and differes from the other characters interactions with each other - or with the protagonist.

Season 1 ending: Here we only see how close and comfortable Gingka-Madoka and Kenta are with each other

Season 2 opening:  Here the rivalry between Kyouya and Gingka  is clearly shown, as we see the two of them fighting each other. It is in the middle of the opening, as their great fight  is in the middle of the second season. The clashing beys also show the equal strength of both bladers.

Season 2 ending: No KyoGin content here, this opening focuses on Gingka and how he has become friends with Masamune

Season 3 openings: This opening begins with a KyoGin battle, which again shows their great rivalry and their equal strength. This scene takes 10 seconds, which is a long time for an opening. That may be the case because their relationship plays a big role in this season and is important for the plot. For why this scene is at the beginning of the opening is either because

 1.the importance of their relationship or

 2.their battles begin already in the 1 episode in this season. 

In this scene our bladers are running, Gingka is in the middle (cause protagonist), right next to him are firstly Madoka and then Kyouya, this scene might show the strong friendship of Gingka and Madoka, which is also greatly shown in the anime. As why Kyouya isn’t next to Gingka might be because he is the type who is more for himself and he also distanced himself from the group a few times which results in him not being next to Gingka in here. Yuki, who tries his best to support the legendary blader quest is running on Gingka’s left side. Then Kenta follows, who also tries to help the legendary bladers, but does it in his own way, therefore not working directly with (next to) Gingka. Benkei also tries his best to support his friends.

In the ending of the opening, a total of five characters surrounder our protagonist. And among them only Kyouya is really on the same height as Gingka. In this one scene, only he is placed directly next to our protagonist. This proves their incredible relationship, which is heavely themed in this season. 

Also, this time Madoka isn’t next to Gingka, but behind him. The scene before that, Madoka running next to Gingka, appears like a happy and easy-going scene, which can be intepreted that that scene focuses more on fun and friendship.In this context Madoka is the most important person to Gingka, as his best friend and someone he really enjoys to spend time with.

 In the current scene, only Kyouya-senpai is next to Gingka, our bladers look more serious, Gingka reachesout for something, it looks like our characters are going on a quest, stopping evil. So this scene might present the fight against ‚villians‘. Madoka is no fighter, so it makes sense that she isn’t next to Gingka, since she cannot fight next to his side, but Kyouya can. He is placed there, because he and Gingka trust each other and if they had to choose with who they want to fight, they would choose each other, they also trust greatly into each other (‘s abilities) and would stand together against the world. So, while Madoka ist he one who has a good time with Gingka and is his closest friend, Kyouya is the one who Gingka wants to have by his side while fighting against evil.

In the second opening of this season, in the end all the legendary bladers are shown, with Gingka being the center. Kyouya is one of the 4 bladers closest to our center. While all the other views are directed straight towards us viewers, Kyouya looks at Gingka. Once again, the only one (I even asked various people who have never watched the anime to be sure). Again his focus, rivalry and the special KyoGin relationship is shown. His constant focus on Gingka-kun, which has already been presented in the anime, has been shown since the very first opening.... and he is the only one who gives our protagonist in the openings that much attention.

Season 3 between image: The image appears in the middle of the episodes, in this one Benkei, Kenta, Madoka, Yuki and Kyouya all look at Gingka, who is in front of them and looks back. He looks back at a single person: Kyouya. This is important, because here not only Kyouya’s focus on Gingka is shown, but also that Gingka’s attention is only on Kyouya, not on Kenta and not on Madoka. This proves how much they mean to each other, and also that out of those 5 Kyouya is the most important one to Gingka-kun.

Season 3 ending: In the last scene, we see a picture with many meanings. Firstly, Kenta is the last one, behind all his friends, this is the case because he isn’t with his friends anymore and is able to grow as a blader on his own now. Still, everyone looks back at him, letting him know, that he is still part of their group. Gingka and Kyouya run on the left side next to each other, on the right side we have Madoka, Benkei and Yuki. KyoGin has a side for their own, it is something special, as no other is there. Although Madoka, Gingkas best friend is in this scene, she isn’t by Gingka’s side. She is on the ‚friend side‘, together with Gingka’s other friends.

 So, if Madoka’s side presents friendship, what does Gingka’s side present? His side means love, because of that only Kyouya  is next to him, even without Benkei, it is just the two of them, seperate from the rest of the group. It shows that Kyouya and Gingka are special to each other and that their relationship surpasses friendship. It also shows, that their friends recognize those feelings and respect them, giving them space. Kyouyai doesn’t act distant in this one, he chooses to run next to Gingka and Gingka chooses to be next to Kyouya instead of being with his friends as he did the previous openings and endings. 

So in the end, since the first opening Kyouya’s focus on Gingka has been shown, in the second season their rivalry is clearly seen and in the final season, the presentation of their relationship changes, it is shown way more clear, plays a more important role and also Gingka finally looks back at Kyouya. In the very end the other characters are no longer with them, but it is just the two of them. The openings and endings, show the development of KyoGin’s relationship and how close they’ve become.

I know we as a fandom blamed it on the dark power but

I’ll never forgive the writers for making “I wanna be better than Gingka” kyoyas only personality trait

Don’t get me wrong I still enjoyed watching him on screen and thanks to him we have team wild fang like it is now but it was so freakin stupid to make him go “no I can’t fight Gingka that way so I will not be on team Japan and instead go to the middle of the Sahara and scream” like WHY

- It is true that Kyouya is obsessed with beating Gingka

- Despite that Kyouya is still himself: Independant, stubborn, ambiguous with lots of temper,...

- It is not shown that obvious, but he also cares about other characters just as Benkei and Nile. In first season, while searching for Gingka Kyouya was quite worried as Benkei got attacked by a boar

He also hit it off with Nile and has some nice BFF dynamic with him

- He still has his own head and is extremely prideful, this can be seen perfectly in Fury. He left the team at Dunamis' temple because of Aguma's words

- He is still the lone lion

- Beating Gingka is his ultimate goal and helped him improve his bey skills so much, making him equal to our protagonist

- Furthermore, he has a deep bound to his Leone

- He is quite dramatic, so it actually suits him to make constantly dramatic declarations about beating Gingka

- He has an extremely deep bound with Leone

- Despite being quite choleric, he has the ability to be silent and watch and learn

- He is quite stable, since after Ryūga battle he is completely fine, while Hilaru and Tsubasa face their own struggles

Also, as for his obsession with beating Gingka, throughout the series the two of them have formed a meaningful relationship with each other. Not only are they a great team

- Gingka helped Kyouya to realize what it means to beyblade again, which is most likely the start for the "beating Gingka obsession"

- Afterwards we see that the two of them get along with each other and are a good team (Kyouya obviously cares about Gingka, he battled the twins at the Dark Nebula during the first season, so that Gingka could go on, Kyouy had a shocked expression as Gingka battled Ryuga for the first time and battled furiously, he searched for Gingka after he left Metal City shortly afterwards, in second season last episode, as Yu, Tsubasa and he ran into Gingka and Madoka Kyouya was relieved to see that Gingka was okay)

- They also trust each other greatly and are able to support each other (As Gingka battled Phoenix, Kyouya appeared and gave Gingka an "emotional powerup", the same as Gingka battled Hyouma, Kyouya was the only one to believe that he will win, during battle blader, Ryūga almost knocked Kyouya out during the beginning of their battle, then Gingka's voice literally brought him back, Kyouya has helped Gingka many times in a troubled situation, like during the movie he saved him from falling to his death and in Fury, during the great Nemesis battle, Kyouya was the first one to offer Leone's power to Gingka and therefore entrusted all his hope and the fate of the whole world in this boy)

- The rivalry is required. As Kyouya got beaten by Ryūga Gingka just stands there shaking, staring in disbelief, proving that Kyouya is important to him. He has liked Kyouya right from the start, in the 2 episode he says that he stays in Metal City for strong opponents like Kyouya and Kenta doesn't understand why since Kyouya is the leader of the Face-Hunter. In the second season he has missed Kyouya so much, he isn't even happy about going to the WorldChampionShip anymore, stares at the sky depressed and has even a nightmare at one point. Gingka always reacts emotional when Kyouya appears. In Masters he acts especially emotional, in the first episode of Fury he is thrilled to see Kyouya. He has said himself in Fury that he knows Kyouya better than anyone else, in season one as Kyouya battled Tobio, Gingka immediately realizes that Kyouya is enjoying himself. Gingka has calmed Kyouya down in Fury after he lost to Ryūga, who else would have been able to pull that off?

- They both enjoy their battles, they both are important to each other, they have a strong relationship. Therefore Kyouya's obsession seems quite more logical, he is not only about beating Gingka, it is also about their relationship, how they sometimes only see each other, how they are each other's motivation, how much they mean to each other. They have a beautiful dynamic that I will analyze one day

And as why he went to Africa. He freaking left the continent just to beat Gingka, that's how far he would go for Gingka, that's how much he wants to reach his goal. He is just that ambiguous and the possibility of beating Gingka on a workd wide stage...it is too tempting and it is a great opportunity to make a name for himself.
