In final assignment, we were required to use one single cardboard element as a continuous surface that folds and bends throughout the design. In addition to the cardboard we were required to select two translucent surface materials and one stick material. The design needed to occupy a total volume approximately 50.000 cm3 .
In my design, I used triangular and rectangular grid. İ was trying to repat same voids in different varities.
In this assignment, we were required to design five interrelated voids by using two surface elements and minimum ten linear elements.
In this assignment, we were required to make a 2D composition representing the concept of Rhythm using the letters as design elements. We were required to use at least five letters. We could scale, mirror and rotate the elements or groups.

In this assignment, we were required to make a composition representing the design concepts that we chose by using quadrilateral prisms folded out white cardboard.
In this assignment, we were required to make a composition (a relief) representing the concept of hierarchy by using cylindrical shapes made out of newspaper and craft paper. The black cardboard could contribute to the design as a background element only through the vertical cylinders. Also, we were required to use only the text and the dimension of text is also an important design parameter that has an influence in design principles.
In this assignment, we were required to make a 2D composition representing the concepts of dominance/contrast. Stripes of paper band should span from the cardboard's edge to edge.
We are asked to make 2D organizations with certain number of shapes.
Step 1- We are required to walk around the faculty building to take several photographs and select one.
Step 2- We are asked to make an abstract map of the photo.
The assigment sheet said that
You are required to walk around the faculty building. Observe and explore at least three volumes that you will select. I selected the studio of first year and I was trying to explain the relationships with other studios. I thought the studios as volumes.
Dominance/Contrast examples in METU Campus. Concepts are presented with horizontal and vertical rectangles, or diffirentation of geometric shapes such as rectangles and circle.
Rhythm
There are two examples of rhythm in METU Campus. Rhythm was achieved by repetition of windows on facade, or repeating the same buildings within an order.

Jury requirements
· 1/100 model
o The differentiation in surface qualities of the topography, tectonic interventions (semi-open spaces) and landscape elements should be shown
o The tectonic interventions (semi-open spaces) should have a similar language with the topography. This means that your model, as a whole, must have a consistent laguage regarding the topography, tectonic elements and landscape elements.
· Two 1/100 seciton drawing (not partial but sections covering the whole site from edge to edge)
· At least two collages: on partial close-up sections (1/50 or 1/20 scale) or perspective drawings
o For construcion materials, use abstract textures instead of actual material textures. For example, if you are proposing a steel frame, you can just use a gray-color texture, no real steel structure image is necessary.
o For environmental and landscape elements, you are allowed to use real textures only of the color palette of your sky, or trees or grass texture is within the laguage of your architectural presentation. That is, bright green grass, hot pink flowers or shiny blue sky is not acceptable.
o Use objects (people, trees, etc) that are properly clipped off from the rest of the original image. Do not use full images (objects with their surroundings) in your collage.
o While preparing the collage, pay attention to the perspective lines, horizon and proportional relations between objects/people/buildings. That is, the figure in the front must be larger than the one at the back.
· At least on abstract diagram/top view showing the movement flows, activities, the use of the topography etc. on plan view. Also, this view will show us where you took the 1/100 sections.
· All your drawings should be on either of the following poster sizes, in any number that you need:
o 60x40 cm (portrait)
o 80x60 cm (landscape)
During the jury place these posters next to each other such that the height of your poster set always is 60 cm.
The garden of forking paths (FINAL EXERCISE)
You have been introduced with the short story “The Garden of Forking Paths” written by Jorge Luis Borges in 1941. In this story, Borges introduces stories with a story, narrative “forking” paths branching to various infinite directions, and maze-like spaces in which all the possible worlds are contained, simultaneous and equally real. In your final assignment, you are required to design an architectural environment influenced by the spatial characteristics in this fictive narrative.
First, you are expected to develop a scenario, in which occupants will be engaged in various everyday activities, both individual and public, movie and stationary. Some activities that you can select can be, but are not limited to urban gardening, book reading or artisanal activities of your choice. For each activity type, you are also required to determine a set of associated activities and the required spaces.
In the following steps, the spatial needs of these activities are to be addressed through your architectural interventions with reference to Borges’ spatial allusions, namely a topography and a group of (activity) spaces that will be embedded onto your topography. First, you will be given an abstract painting. Following your research about the artist and the painting itself, you are required to design a topography by means of transforming the painting into a continuous surface (your site). To do this, elevate the painted regions towards the third dimension. That is, you are required to generate slopes, heights or hills, valleys or sunken areas. While doing so, you are expected to propose various movement paths; juxtapositions, mingles or encounters; open and semi-open spaces for nodal points or flows; and various topographical surface qualities. In the generation of semi-open spaces, you should benefit from the topography itself, and also use other tectonic materials.
Design considerations:
You are free to choose any material or method of construction, but remember that all your architectural interventions should bear a similarity in language.
Maximizing the vertical distance between the lowest and highest points in your topography can be useful for the definition of your spaces.
Remember that the continuity of the human movement should be paralleled by the continuity of the topography.
The scale of your models should be 1/100.
EXERCISE-3 KNOTS and FLOWS: watching, waiting, walking
(Step1) You will visit the main entrance of the Main Library Building and the surrounding area fora whole day in order to observe and record the human movements, various uses, events and activities. Based on these analyses, you are required to work in groups of three to produce maps based on human activities, specifically of watching, waiting, and walking. You are expected to present one map for each activity pattern and superimpose all maps as layers in the final presentation.
(Step2) For this mapping exercise, you are free to use various techniques such as collage, layering, sketching, or drawings; and materials such as paper, mesh, fabric or other textures materials. These maps will be presented in various scales depending on your need.
(Step3) You are required to design an architectural intervention accomadating three Ws-watching, waiting,and walking- in front of the main library. Derived from your activity maps, your design will consist os several event paths intersecting at certain nodes that facilities resting and that regulate the pace of movement. To generate spaces for this continuous movement, you are expected to use folding as a method of construction. Folding will let you design a continuous surface that can fold onto itself to create and accomodate various types of activities.
EXERCISE-2 SPECTO
This exercise asks you to design the SPECTO,a viewing station programming ways of looking within the open spaces of the Anatolian Civilization Museum. In the design process, youarerequiredto follow the steps below.
(Step1)
The Project will start with a site visit to the Anatolian Civilization Museum. Bring a camera or smart phone, during your visit, you ara required to look out forthe existing built environment; the Access to the site and the pedestrian walkways; landscape elements; displayed objects; level differences on the ground etc. Following, you are required to choose a spot for your specto. From this spot, take many pictures in all directions(360). These pictures will be used to create a panaromic image of the environment.
(Step2)
In the final phase, create a clyndrical screen (Radius=25 cm) that displays your 360’ panoramic view in black and White. İn this panoramic view you are required to highlight in red 3-5 views that you will choose. At the center of the cylinder indicate your observer using a wooden stick. Then indicates the boundaries of view (cone of vision) by attaching strings from the observer towards the edges of your selected views
Base on your previous vision study, youare asked to consider various levels of vision interaction in order to reveal and/or conceal certain views of your choice. First differantiate the levels of visual interation between your selected views and determine how much each will be visually emphasized by the Specto. Then design specto by using one of the cunstruction methods: sectioning: aggregation: modulation etc. The specto should exhaust an area of 25 m2. Your model should be in 1/100 scale.
EXERCISE-1
(Step2)Create an abstraction form of your own choreography.
(Step3)Design a performing topography for the your own choreography. To do this, you should reinterpret the construction priciples of your abstraction.
