Cloud watched the other man as he went over Cloud's notes and drawings feeling oddly nervous. He wasn't really one to design things and he knew that it was a crazy idea.
The far off stare somewhere over Cloud's shoulder was awkward for the swordsman almost immediately. Social awkwardness at it's finest. He almost startled when he spoke again.
Cloud blinked, surprised that he thought it was possible and that he hadn't known who Cloud was. Nonetheless, Cloud took the offered hand.
"Cloud Strife."
Cloud Strife. Rod paused, considering that for a moment, then snapped his fingers. "You. You do the aerials with a buster blade, I have heard of your swordsmanship."
Because of course to Rod that was in fact the main thing of interest. ShinRa Who? SOLDIER what now?
"Aerials with a buster blade," he repeated softly, then shook his head. "Leviathan wept. Well. It's an honor to meet such a fine swordsman.... and perhaps, to bring a dream to life you didn't actually expect?"
He hadn't missed that look, the incredulity that Rod -- that anyone -- could make such a thing. And it would be a challenge... but he was up for it.
"Around these parts they call me Rod the Bladestar," he said, smiling widely. "But the name's Rod. And it would be an honor to make this beauty."
Cloud blinks in surprise again. That's what he knows him for? Aerials with his buster blade? That was a new one to him but it was oddly... Refreshing? Most of the people who recognized him or his name knew him for much more than that.
Sometimes it was heavy to carry.
"You really think you can do it?" And it wasn't Cloud questioning Rod's ability; he had gone to him for a reason after all. But he hadn't wanted to get his hopes up.
Cloud let out a breath before pulling a piece of paper out of his pocket and handing it over to Rod, "I know it wouldn't be easy if it's manageable at all..."
Seven swords that could come together into one buster blade. One that he could take apart easily to dual wield if he needed to. Was it excessive? Yes. Did he really need it? Probably not, but if Rod could even pull off two swords, Cloud would be grateful. It would make his job a lot easier.
Rod tugged his gloves off and shoved them under the belt that held up his blacksmith's apron, looking intently at the paper. His fingertip trailed along the lines of it and he murmured the notes as he read them to himself.
He then proceeded to stare just past his new friend's right shoulder, red brows furrowed under the shade of his hat, as he tried to envision it.
Just as it was getting awkward his gaze snapped back to the other, a grin returning. This time, something eager and wanting in it. Craving the challenge. "This is a brilliant idea. You wouldn't execute it like this, but I think we can make it work. Mockups and such first, of course but... yeah. Yeah, we can do this."
"What's your name, swordsman?" He asked, offering a hand. "Let's shake on it."
Cloud watched the other man as he went over Cloud's notes and drawings feeling oddly nervous. He wasn't really one to design things and he knew that it was a crazy idea.

"Cloud Strife."
It was strange to find someone so animated, so happy. Cloud was used to the people of Edge who rarely would spare a polite smile. He found it almost jarring.
But he could get passed that even if it took him a moment, "I heard you make unique weapons."
He watched him hang up the scythes and, yeah, that was some fine craftsmanship. It almost made Cloud wish he was better with weapons that weren't swords. Almost.
"I have an idea for one but it's going to sound a little crazy."
Rod tipped his head, considering the wares he had on display. War hammers and scythes, long and compound bows, mage's staffs, short swords and long swords, old fashioned eastern style buster blades, a variety of morning stars, shuriken of all sizes and more than a few kunai and daggers.
You might just say he had some range of creative ability.
Rod's eyes lit in excitement, his smile broad. "Oh good. I could use a little crazy. Show me what you got."
Cloud let out a breath before pulling a piece of paper out of his pocket and handing it over to Rod, "I know it wouldn't be easy if it's manageable at all..."

Cloud had heard of a man outside the city who was known to forge amazing weapons. While, technically, Cloud didn't need an amazing weapon to deal with the monsters around Edge he was curious if the man could make something he had dreamed up.
He approached the shop, getting off his motorcycle and heading in. He looked around and even his amateur eye could see the quality in the weapons. Perfect.
He leaned against the counter, content to look over the weapons that were for sale for the moment while he waited for the shopkeep.
He did fidget a bit, feeling nervous and a little excited that maybe, just maybe, the absurd sword he thought up could actually be made reality.
Rod came around front, intending to put up hie latest pieces in the display and add an ask to haggle tag on them. It was then that he spotted the motorcycle -- a beautiful machine he took a moment to admire -- before spotting a memorable looking blond that he could not in fact place in his memory. Huh.
Hanging up the battle scythes, he waved to the man with a bright smile. "Hey there. What brings you out here, my friend?"
Always more reasonable to assume friendship, easier to back out of it than to overcome the awkwardness of wrongly assuming enemies. Besides, it was much more fun to get friends. Friends were far more likely to talk shop, commission, and buy.

Less SOLDIER More Solder | Rod & Cloud
@yeahinmyhead gave me DEALER'S CHOICE, and I'm giving her Rod The Bladestar, from Threads of Fate -- FF7 AU -- you can find him here.
Things happened on Gaia. Strange, otherworldly things. The whole 'almost wiped out by a meteor' thing came to mind. That was... something.
Yeah. Something.
Rod took refuge in his weapon design, in the precision of the pencil, clean lines bringing his visions to something tangible. And then, pummeling it into shape, breathing life into it with the fire of the forge and the power of the bellows, quenched and beaten until finally--
"Oh, you're beautiful," Rod whispered, admiring the battle scythes he'd just finished. "Golden Gale... perfection."
He stepped out of the forge and held them up to shine in the light. They really were gorgeous pieces and they made his heart sing.
Of course now he needed something more complex. He needed a challenge.
He let his hair down for a moment, the thick red curtain falling down to midback as he chugged a hydration mix. You sweat like crazy doing this. Motion caught him out of the corner of his eye and he turned, tipping his head to listen to the sound of a motorcycle fast approaching.
Maybe his challenge was about to find him.

For once Cloud is on the receiving end of a delivery, a totally-home-made birthday cake that Aerith will swear she slaved over for hours, the bakery logo on the box isn't related of course.
Happy (early) birthday 💕
Of course she did. Just borrowed the box from the bakery for delivery purposes. Obviously.
