I'm begging my mutuals once again to pay attention to the wildfires that have consumed entire towns this time in Chile. The wildfires began on January 14 but the first significant outbreaks were recorded the following days. Yesterday the wildfires intensified and turned catastrophic, forcing people to be evacuated. During the night 90% of Penco commune and 80% of Lirquén commune were consumed by fire, surrounding Concepción, the second largest city in Chile, where the fires are approaching its urban outskirts. Punta de Parra, a coastal town, is completely destroyed, 47 of its inhabitants had to be evacuated by sea. 50000 acres have burned, it's as if almost all of Paris had burned down, or an area larger than the city of Barcelona, San Francisco, or Disney World Resort in Florida had burned down. 20000 people evacuated. 1500 people have lost everything. 325 homes burned to the ground. 19 people dead. Native and domestic animals dead or with burn injuries. 3700 firefighters together with military personnel and police officers are deployed in the area. Curfew and state of emergency have been declared. Weather conditions, especially wind, have worsened the fires, which will continue to burn for days before being contained if the weather does not change.
This catastrophe is due to forestry companies that have destroyed native forests to replace them with pine and eucalyptus plantations, which today cover 36% of Biobío Region. Plantation fires are more intense, faster, and harder to control, while native forest are more resilient, the wildfires are less energetic and advance more slowly. The fires broke out in areas where companies had applied for permits to start rare earth mining operations and to build a high-voltage power line, projects that the inhabitants were opposed to since they wanted to turn the area into a park. It's not the first time the region has suffered fires of this magnitude, it was also the most affected region by 2010 Chile earthquake and tsunami.
Besides, Biobío is Chile's widest and second largest river, and back in 2023, the region's government signed a deal with Mekorot, an Israeli company, for a six-month consultancy with "recommendations for making the best use of water for the benefit of the people living in the region". Mekorot supplies more than 80% of Israel's drinking water by stealing Palestine's water. Milei gave this company the water from 12 provinces in Argentina, including Patagonia, home of one of the largest reserves of fresh water in the southern hemisphere thanks to its glaciers, ice fields, lakes, and large aquifers.
