a/n: iâve noticed a certain reaction to writing hetero fronted fics with these characters is to be somewhat frowned upon. i would like to say that iâm not trying to contribute to any erasure of what this show beautifully captures, but as anyone can see, these characters are hot. i also have an imagination that i wonât silence. for anyone that feels like iâm overstepping, there is a queer person behind this screen. thank you for reading, and i hope you enjoy this preview! WC: 4.5k and still writing
The mix of alcohol was finally churning in your stomach, and you felt a lazy grin spread across your face. Your head became too heavy for your neck to hold, folding into it backwards as you rolled with the beat of the music. A giddy feeling washed over you; you didnât even want to dance with anybody, you just wanted to relish in this feeling of feeling good. You didnât want it to end.
It was then you were made aware of the little plastic baggie you had stuffed in your bra. The top corner of the bag was turning sharp against your skin, leaving a small indentation in the soft flesh of your breast. You turned your head towards the bathroom and saw that you were still one of the only few people up here, and there was no line at the bathroom door. Standing up, you sauntered to it, your heels suddenly proving increasingly harder to walk in.Â
Iâm gonna have to sober up a bit before I walk outta here, or Igor wonât let me out of his sight. You thought to yourself.Â
As your hand touched the cool metal of the handle, you couldnât shake the feeling of someone watching you. You turned your head over your shoulder and saw nothing but dark hallways, a few bodies chatting, and the red and blue lights flashing from downstairs. Leaving beams of purple to dance across the ceiling, distracting you enough to try and forget about the imaginary eyes on you.
You shook your head and pushed into the bathroom; the garnet light that bled out of the room was ardent, eclipsing the darkness of the black tile of the upstairs, creating a path that led straight to you. You paused at the door, the red light blinding you after your eyes had adjusted to the dark. Stepping in and closing the door, you hung your coat on the rack stuck to the door. Spinning with the room around you, the walls were littered with graffiti and people writing the most depraved things they could think of. The mirror had some scratches on it, distorting your appearance, but not as much as the scribbles of flowers running diagonally across the glass.Â
You pulled the plastic baggie from your bra and grabbed your phone and a card from your small wallet. You turned on your flashlight to see all the different colors adorning the mirror. It was then that you dropped your head against the wall and started panting. An amalgamation of feelings was flooding through you, and you felt like you couldnât breathe right. Turning off the flashlight, you dumped a small amount of milky powder on the black of your screen before cutting it into thin lines with your card. The music outside slowed to a slower, somewhat muffled edm playlist. You werenât complaining. You were having a party of your own, and truthfully, your body was slowing down.Â
There was something about the red light distorting your features, and painting you in silken sin that let you fully envelop yourself in the depravity. It took away from the shame of doing this by yourself. From the shame of turning out exactly how everyone thought you would be. You were a product of your environment; who could blame you? Rushing from one place to the next, needing to be prim and perfect for anyone who had a chance to run their gaze over you, and you had money almost always at your disposal. If that made you a bad person, then so be it.Â
You brought your phone to your nose, index finger plugging one nostril. You got through about half a line before you heard the door click open.Â
Fuck!
You dropped your phone on the floor in a panic and shoved the plastic baggie back in your bra, making sure to fold it over so you wouldnât lose any more of your coke. You intended on cutting more lines after whoever this was left.
âSomeoneâs in her-â
These dirty blonde curls would be the death of you.Â
âOh, come on! Canât even piss without you up my ass, Roz.â
His tone was low and slow, eyes narrowing as he raked over your form. Your phone was still on the floor, and he went to pick it up after letting the door shut behind him. You bent down at the same time, a little too fast for your body's current state, as you wobbled once you put all your weight into a squat.Â
âI got it, itâs oka-â You tried to interrupt.
He grabbed it before you did, and the white remnants of your vice were still sprinkled across the black mirror. Most of the powder was now a distant memory, blending in with the white specks on the black tile.Â
â-What is this?â
âThe fuck you think it is, Rozy?â
Even your anger was forced with him. It didnât matter what he said; something in your spirit wanted to be soft around him. It felt safe. He felt safe. You werenât even that mad about what he said before; you were just upset that someone saw through the facade you created and hit you where they knew it would hurt most.Â
âThis is what youâre doing now?â
âOh, fuck you. Don't act like you care now. Remember, Iâve got a track record with half the city.â
âSo you get drunk and coked up because I hurt your feelings?â
You stared at him. This time, not looking away as your eyes welled up again for the umpteenth time tonight.Â
âWhy are you here?â You choked out.Â
You lost this battle with your tears, and your voiceâtraitor that it wasâsplintered the moment you used your chords to speak. The thick, aching stains of emotions forgotten, buried too deep to uncover with charm, surged free and poured down your face. Tracing rivers down your face, you found the courage to look at Ilya, and he was walking toward you, an unfamiliar softness gracing his features.Â
âI followed you. Didnât trust you to not make stupid decision.âÂ
Thatâs why I felt like I was being watched.Â
âYouâre kind of like a gargoyle, you know that?â
âStop avoiding this, Y/n.â
âOh, so since you want this to work now, and youâre done being an asshole, I have to cooperate? Nice try.âÂ
All the things she said, all the things she said, running through my head, running through my head, running through my head. This is not enough.
The music mocked you again, except this time, he wasnât a thoughtâhe was standing right in front of you. You snatched your coat off the rack and moved to the door, but your steps faltered as your eyes landed on his large palm flattened against the door frame, barring your escape. His broad frame closed the distance, chest flush up against your back. Heat poured off his frame and slightly sobered you up as you honed in on his breathing. Ragged, unsteady, and heavy, as if he chased you in here.Â
âStop running.â
âLet me out.â You said through gritted teeth, still not facing him.
âStill so ŃĐżŃŃĐŒŃĐč stubborn, Y/n.â
âĐĐŸŃŃĐ» ĐœĐ°Ń ŃĐč.â Go fuck yourself.
âPlease, just look at me, Y/n.â
You let out a sigh, reluctantly shuffling your feet to face him, eyes now red from crying and your pupils slightly blown from the coke.Â
âI asked her to come find you because you have not left my brain since last time I saw you.â There was a beat of silence where you swore the bass of the music replaced your heartbeat. âI canât pretend like I donât see you every time I close my eyes. You always were more than a hookup. It scared me.â
You stared at him. Oceans piling up behind your waterline, threatening to send floods down your face again.Â
hiii,I saw that you were asking for dunk requests. I'm not very good at making requests, but how about something about Reader being Aerion's wife, but he treats her badly, abuses her or something like that, and at some point during the Ashford tournament, she escapes from Aerion for a while, and runs into Duncan, and here I'll let you decide what happens next lol đ§đœââïž
Hiiii! I am not ignoring your request, I just have been so backed up with work and school. I have been writing it and hopefully I will be done with it by the end of this week. But for now enjoy a little snippet and thank you so much for your request!!
-Dionysus
Tournaments are the only time in your miserable life that you ever look forward to. For you relish in the possibility of Aerionâs gruesome and untimely end. The thought alone makes your heart skip a beat. But alas, just thought they would remain.
You two had been forcibly wed to preserve the pristine line of dragon blood. As a child, you were delighted at the prospect of being wed to a prince and one day ruling beside him to all the Seven Kingdoms.
Time unfortunately had not been so kind. As when King Daeron approached you and Aerion and decided you would be wed at the sign of your flowering, Aerion laid claim over you. Even before then, ordering you around with the excuse of it being the wifely thing to do and that he was to sit on the Iron Throne. You had made Aerion learn very quickly that he would not be the one to drag you around, for you were much larger than him, physically.
You were a Targaryen after all and your father raised you to be a master of the long sword. You were far from interested in what was considered ladylike. You were always enthralled with the stories your father had told you of the great knights who lived before you and vowed to protect the innocent lives of those in the Seven Knigdoms. All you had wanted was to be as noble as they once were, but fate had other plans for you in store.
The Targaryen clan had rode into Ashford Meadow. A disgustingly grand entrance for some individuals who didnât even deserve a smile in their direction.
You rode next to Aerion on your own horse as you vowed to be as far away from Aerion as humanly possible. He approaches someone who stands near the stables. A man, dressed in drab clothes and who stands an absolute giant.
âStable hand,â Aerion says as he throws himself off his horse.
âSee that she gets some oats and a thorough brushing tonight.â
The giant man turns around and looks down, literally at him.
âYour grace, Iâm sorry but I am not the stable hand. I-I have the honor to be a knight.â
He stumbles over his words in a way that you canât help but let out a breathy chuckle.
âAnd what is so amusing to you?â Aerion quips his head in your direction. You respond by rolling your eyes and turning your head in the other direction.
âAerion, go to the castle and Iâll take care of the horses. Like I always do.â You mumble under your breath as you hop off your horse.
Aerion approaches you, visibly angry. Most likely due to the way you had spoken to him just now. You challenge his deep stare with one of your own.
Before you have time to move away, a sharp sting hits your face before you can process that Aerion has slapped you. Your face turns to the side before you raise your hand to your left cheek.
You hear a gasp in the background, presumably coming from the giant thatâs witnessing this entire affair. As well as your horse who starts bucking and becoming agitated. You place your hand on her chest and pet her as you try to calm her down. You slowly turn your body back to face Aerion.
In this intense moment, you smile, but not to Aerion, but to the man who stands behind him in a state of utter shock.
Aerion struts his way off somewhere in the distance, most likely to the castle. You brush yourself off and move over back to your horse.
âItâs okay, girl. Just Aerion being Aerion again,â you say as you try to hide your shaking voice.
You turn back around only to see that giant man has made an advance towards you, closing the large space there once was between the two of you.
âY-your graceâ he starts, âAre you okay?â the man asks you with a small voice.
You raise your hand up to your eyes to wipe the stray tears that have escaped from your eyes.
âYes, yes. Iâm okay.â you say as you try to make your voice sound as stable as it can be. âAerion has quite the temper and he thinks that by hitting me Iâll be intimidated by him. He fails every timeâ you laugh out the last sentence.
The giant man quips his head at you, trying to understand your demeanor.
âSo knight, what name has been bestowed upon you?â You ask as you smooth out your black dress.
âDuncan. Ser Duncan the Tall.â He stands up straighter as he mentions the moniker at the end of his name.
âWell, Ser Duncan, Iâm Y/N Targaryen. I take it that I will be seeing you in the tournament, yes?â
Duncan slightly smiles at the mention of the tournament.
âYes, you will, your grace.â He says as he bows his head to you.
âPlease, Ser Duncan, just call me Y/N.â A small smile creeps onto your face as you look at him. You can quite pinpoint it but youâre drawn to him in a way that words canât explain.
âAs much as Iâd like to stick around and talk with you, I must tend to mine and my husbandâs horse and make my way to the castle. I hope to see you around, Ser Duncan.â
You notice his eyes go wide. Presumably at the realization that Aerion was your husband.
âYou as well your gra- Y/n,â he corrects himself.
You smile and grab the reins of both horses and slowly trudge back to the castle, dreading the fact that you will have to face Aerion and however he thinks to âpunishâ you for your behavior.
i have been so obsessed with a knight of the seven kingdoms. especially ser duncan. i will be taking requests for fics or if yall have any ideas i want them neowwwwww. Love ya!

summary: in a trade gone bad, youâve been sought out by macrinus due to your animalistic combat skills. stuck in the camp of gladiators, Hanno is assigned your sparring partner. your existence is a bitter reminder of what he lost but in hate we find love.Â
a/n: saw gladiator for a second time and i felt compelled to write, seeing as i CANNOT stop thinking about lucius/hanno. heâs just too hot. considering the historical timeline, this is a little inaccurate, seeing as gladiatrices were banned in 200 AD. hopefully, this will be up to par with the rest of the amazing writers in this tag. hope you have a great day!Â

Being the only woman in the camp of gladiators left you feeling like a chewed piece of communal meat that was too tough to swallow. Stuck in a loop of forever being spit out, only to be soon placed in the mouth of another slobbering animal.Â
Anything beat the damnation of being a courtesan.Â
The life you lived before was that of sexual servitude, left to your own meticulous devices of survival. Even with your promiscuous occupation, you found ways to be exceedingly picky. It was the only way you could save the last bit of dignity that you had left. Caracalla, saw a means to see an end to your persnickety nature when you denied him of the favors he requested. After the exile and potential murder of his late wife, most of the other courtesans never denied his requests, but when you were placed between his legs and met with unsightly sores as the base of his shaft; you couldnât find the gall to risk your health. Especially, not for some entitled tyrant who was destroying Rome for all that it was worth.Â
You told yourself that this would be one of the few clients youâd swallow your pride for but instead, you forced him to vomit his. Your refusal birthed a mirage of embarrassment and shame shrouded in anger and a battle cry for your death. After being whisked away by his servants, you were foolish to think that this would be the end of the interaction. As you walked the path home, you were overcome with wilting anxiety. In the moment where you felt you might be able to make it safely back, you were bombarded by royal guards.Â
Pummeling you to the ground, your fists connected with as many faces as possible. When your coiled hands of fury and fright failed you, you resorted to more primal behaviors. Using your teeth to stall your enemies, shreds of crimson skin stained your mouth, but alasâyou were severely outnumbered. One man struck the back of your head and covered your face with a burlap sack. Feeling metal cuffs being placed around your wrists, you allowed your bones to relax in your defeat, understanding that you were once again shackled to the fall of Rome.Â
They tossed you around like garbage. You knew thatâs how they saw you and could only imagine what Caracalla had said about you for them to be so rough. Dragging your body across the gravel, you fell limp in their grasp not caring where you ended up next. Soon sleep draped over your body and you hoped that your eyes would fight fluttering open, leading you to an everlasting sleep.Â
When you awoke, you were in a stone cell clad in your dirtied stola. The ends of the dress were speckled with dirt and the low, modified neckline was frayed as if someone tried to tear it open. Sitting up on the bed you peered through the bars of your royal cage, your eyes landing on sweaty, shirtless men across the way. Walking to the bars, you could see that a few guards were patrolling the area, but you couldnât help to notice that it seemed you were the only woman in these cells. Before you could find the strength to call out to someone, a brown-skinned man costumed in elaborate robes and jewelry came up on the other side of the cell.Â
âAh! Youâve awakened. And just in time, I must say, you get to prove your worth to me this morning.â
âExcuse me?â
âApologies, suppose it would be a common courtesy to inform you what your new duties are. I have to admit, I saw you last night, tearing into those guards like a feral banshee; very similar to my barbarian.âÂ
Barbarian?
Your face contorted in confusion, wishing that the antics of storytelling would be removed from the conversation; however, judging from this manâs outward appearance you doubted youâd be awarded the luxury.Â
âA gladiator of mine likes to eat monkeys. Proven to be one my best fighters, and seeing you behave as equally inhuman if not more than him, especiallyâŠafter hearing what you didâI have to say Iâm overjoyed to have a barbarian of beauty to bet on as well.â
Your face soured, realizing you were slavery bait. No better than cattle waiting to be slaughtered.Â
âIâm not fighting for you.â
âAh, my banshee, you seeâyou arenât fighting for me. NoâŠbut rather your freedom. Fight for me, and Iâll give you whatever you want.â
Your hand struck the metal bars of the cell. The ringing of the bars reverberating off the chambers of the stone prison. It was equally as haunting as the shriek of a banshee in the dead of night. Frustration and agony rushed through you, demanding a destination for its release, the rusty bars alchemizing the brunt of your fury. The only way out was through. Through blood, through agonizing pain, through the tears of what was left of your family name, through ruin. You let your mind wander about what could possibly satisfy the seething, bitter ache that now resided in your soul.Â
The fall of Rome? Its mighty walls finally crumbling due to its horrific excuse of the ruling. A damning plague? Disease wiping out all of those who were destined to meet the divine in some display of retribution? Or perhaps, the death of Geta so that Caracalla could choke on the verity of his despotic rule? Each thought seemed chaotic enough to satisfy the storm of rage within but there was only one thing that would snuff the flames.Â
âCaracallaâs head.â
You stormed to the cell gates, fire breathing out of your nostrils and rage swimming in your irises. If he were to fall headlong, a bloody trophy for you to display, your hunger would be satiated. You fought tooth and nail your entire life, to be something more than a slave and here you were being pawned off for entertainment. Justice demanded her dues.Â
âThere she is. Now, put these on and follow their orders, Iâll be with you soon.âÂ
The cell gate opened and you were handed an olive green tunic, strophium, and subligar. Sighing as you looked at the fabric in your hands, you braced yourself for the long road ahead. Nodding to the man you realized something before he walked off.
âWhat was your name?â
âMacrinus. Yours?â
You hesitated, the weight of your given name threatening to roll past your lips. This couldnât be your legacyâa woman discarded for the entertainment of others, her last shreds of dignity wrung dry and tattered. No one would seek the truth, nor would they care for the details of your defiance toward Caracalla. They would crave the story spoonfed to them by a diluted man.Â
A savage.Â
A wanton woman who was too picky in her own right in a poor attempt at survival. A woman who denied a royal the spoils he believed to be his right.Â
A whore. Nothing more.Â
That would be the glorious legacy, at least that would be the emphatic story the town would cry if this were to result in your untimely death. And yet, as you bored your eyes into the man on the other side of the bars, something about his presence loomed like a shadow too wicked to trust. The unsettling dissonance was difficult to ignore. Should he ask for the truth of your life, youâd give it willingly, but something in his gaze served as a warning: this truth would bear no fruits for you.Â
âNero.â
âThatâs not your birth name, is it?â
âMy birth name will die with Rome, if I see it fit.âÂ
Macrinus nodded a knowing smirk painting his lips before he walked off.Â
In your new robes, you sat on the bed, waiting for your cell gate to be opened. In your dissociative state, you noticed all the different colors in the dirt and the different sizes of the rocks and pebbles. Wondering how long it took for these fragments of eternity to be reduced to small scraps of their original form. The squeaking from the gate tore you from your thoughts and a man dressed in typical gladiator armour greeted you with something mixed with disdain and pity.Â
âCome. Time to train.â
You rose, the stretching of your limbs and the movement towards the man wrought with apathy running through your marrow. Was the struggle ahead worth the anguish that came with it? Would surrendering your life and facing judgment by the gods to everlasting torment bring a sense of solace in its finality? Would there be any reward in this life or the next for a soul being unmade by its own hand to escape imprecation?Â
Your head hung as you followed the man outside, leading you to a gathering of burly men in tunics with all love for life stripped from their faces. They were bruised, scabbed, and jaded by the torment theyâd been subjected to; but of course, the entrance of a woman breathed some vitality back into them. In the time spent in your cell, you had braided your hair away from your face, leaving your imminent beauty on display despite the rags they clothed you in. It was as if the world silenced around you as you walked in, your head now held high in the presence of others. A ringing filled your ears as your eyes landed on a ragged man, a cold detachment surrounding his aura. He was staring. A jaded expression tracked your every move as you took the open seat next to him, not uttering a sound.Â
You hung your head again, hoping to ignore the invasive and curious gazes of the other men. Clasping your hands together, you prayed to the Gods to give you the strength to survive. Your prayers were cut short as you heard Macrinusâ voice echo over the various sounds of the training camp.Â
âAs you all can see, we have a new barbarian joining our ranks today. She is destined to earn her place in the arena just as all of you. Her late arrival means her trials begin in full. No. Mercy. Since my barbarian, Hanno, claimed victory in the hand-to-hand combat two days ago, perhaps itâs only fitting that you, Nero, show us the skills that spared you your life. After all, they chose to throw you in the gladiator pit instead of severing your head. Hanno, Nero, up!â
Macrinus clapped his hands together to urge haste in movement from you and whoever Hanno was. As you stood, you realized the body next to you was also rising in stature. Gazing in his eyes this time, there was an emptiness that stirred. For a moment you saw a flash of sorrow in his eyes and you furrowed your brow in response. He was built and you began to wonder what your limitations were for combat. You stood in between the benches of men and the elaborate chair Macrinus was sitting in, planting your feet in the dirt in a fighting stance. You waited for Hanno to reciprocate the stance but every time he leaned his body down, he stood back up in apprehension. Shaking his limbs in rejection, he turned to Macrinus.Â
âThis is not right. To fight a woman in theseâŠin any conditions. Pick someone else.âÂ
âYou will fight her or all deals are off. Whoâs to say sheâs not a worthy opponent?Â
Your shoulders lifted lazily, dropping them with a defiant slouch as your face cast a dismissive look. Without hesitation, you settled back into your stance, surging at Hanno. You landed a jab straight to his jaw before drifting around his ankles, creating a tornado of dust that wove through his defenses. A storm of grit and determination fueling your fury. When he fell, the sorrow in his eyes was swallowed and replaced by vexation. You dodged his punches with precision, though his fist made home in your gut, dropping you to the ground. You hobbled up slowly, coughing out the bitter dust in your throat before lunging at him again with savage resolve.Â
He was an equal opponent, but you were determined to win. Tapping into the same energy from the night before, instinct ravaged your body as you lept on his back, raining blows of rage down on his chest. His attempts to rid you of him only fueled your fire of wrath more and you grabbed a fistful of his hair. You let loose a scream that was sharp enough to sear the air, a blistering echo to the ears. Baring your teeth you were disposed to bite.
âStop!âÂ
Macrinusâ voice bellowed through the camp ceasing the dog fight in front of him. You hissed at him, an animal seized mid-hunt. Hopping off of Hannoâs back, you stood in front of him and bowed in tense submission before walking with your head hung low back to your seat. Macrinus stood and gave a calculated, smug look towards the man clad in leather armour that brought you down here.Â
âHose her down and cell her with him. Balance already hangs by a thread in this camp. We must keep vigilant. I believe two invasive species, separated, will incite chaos. Keep them together and maybe those who resist them will have enough strength to endureâÂ
You raised your head slowly, turning to look at Hanno seated next to you, commiseration flooding your features. You were surprised to see the same look staring back at you. Pressing your lips in a fine line, you rose and followed the guard to the bathing chambers.Â
~*~
Your muscles ached, the hot water soothing the pain radiating through your limbs. You assumed it was Macrinus, but there was folded fabric at the edge of the bath. Stepping out and drying yourself off, you draped the clothing over your body, only to find that it barely reached your mid-thigh. You knew youâd be asking for too much to be treated with some note of decency, but at least you were able to clean yourself. The guard walked you back to the cells and as you passed your previous one being occupied by another man, you realized the orders from earlier were not a bluff and youâd have to face Hanno like a fool.Â
As you walked down the corridor, men in the other cells were whistling, catcalling you to come stay in their cell instead. Claiming that they could show you a better time than Hanno or the emperor.Â
The word spread like wildfire. Once a whore, always a whore.Â
You hung your head, hoping that somehow if you wore your shame on your sleeve youâd disappear from all the madness. The squeak from the cell bars ripped you from your thoughts and you looked at Hanno apologetically before seating yourself on the bed across his.Â
âBy Gods, why do they have you in here?â
You shook your head, trying to will away the tears that were welling up in your eyes. His first words to you werenât vulgar or accusatory, they were forged of concern and despondent curiosity. You licked your lips, caging them in between your teeth in an attempt to swallow the burning ball of emotions that was bubbling up your throat. You turned to face him finally, swallowing your fears and accepting your fate. Something about him told you that you could trust him. Sighing, you found your strength to speak.Â
âI assume youâve heard the echoes of what Iâve done?â
Hanno nodded slowly.
âThere is some verity to the words but not all. I know you may find it difficult to see truth in such a claim, especially as I stand before you clad in garments of odium, bestowed so graciously upon me. But know thisâ I am more than a mere cyprian. Indeed, I am Romeâs poorest excuse for one, and that very deficiency is what has landed me in the arena.âÂ
âWhat is this deficiency you speak of?
âBeing too particular in whom I offered services to. I only did what I did to surviveâŠand now, I must survive for sportâentertainment for eyes who would care less if I lived or bled out in the dirt.â
Hanno looked down at his hand, fiddling with the ring that adorned his pinky finger.Â
âI alsoâŠI want to apologize for my behavior earlier today. He christened me a âbarbarian of beautyâ âfigured I needed to give him a reason to keep his favor. I do hope you understand, but still, the animalic behavior was unjust.âÂ
âNo need. We must survive, by any means necessary. I only wish the Gods decided a different fate for you.âÂ
Hannoâs breath became heavy but sparse. He seemed to be reminiscing on something but wouldnât dare let the words fill the air between you. He mumbled something you couldnât quite catch and you were about to inquire but his low voice painted the silence first.Â
âYour name, itâs not Nero, is it?â
Your body separated itself from your mind and you stared at Hanno with fear and uncertainty. Your birth name was shallow on your tongue but heavy in your throat, begging for someone to see you for more than just your flesh. To attach an identity to the body more than an insult. You shook your head and turned to the makeshift window toward the ceiling, seeing a navy blue begin to stroke the sky in its image, hoping that something would give you the strength to share yourself the same way you had done when it was at the expense of others. Hannoâs hand encased your own and brought you back to the conversation as the gesture startled you.Â
âIâm not your enemy. Remember weâre âbarbariansâ, only the two of us.âÂ
Sighing, he swallowed his pride and revealed his belly to you.Â
âHanno is not my name, and Iâve not always been Romeâs favorite beast. Iâve come to know I bore a name that mattered. Lucius Verus Aurelius. The Prince of Rome. A name I may never be able to reclaim in glory.â
He paused tightening his grip around your hand as if seeking comfort.Â
âThere was a dream of Rome, one that my father fought for. But through slaughter and slavery, power won over the people and now we wade in the remnants of what once was. In search of the hope that someone or something will restore the honor.âÂ
Lucius let go of your hands and brought one of his calloused ones to his face, Rubbing the stress-ridden features away as the scratch of his beard caught your ears. You watched him attentively, waiting on bated breath for him to speak his next words. He leaned closer, the gap between seeming to never have existed. He gazed into your eyes, searching for something you knew not of until he uttered them in the next breath.Â
âYou remind me of her.â His voice was nearly a whisper. Something youâd miss again if you werenât so focused on him. With more chest to his tone, he admitted.
âMy wife. She burned like you do. A flame that never quit dancing. A warrior who refused to bowâthey stole her spark. The same day they made me a slave. A bitter goodbye, I shared, but when I look at youâŠI see her ghost.â
There was a touch of venom in his last words. They seemed to have meant good will but the taste was sour in your mouth. A moment fleeting once again. Even in your vulnerability, your search for someone seeing you for you, you were a reminder of something else. You paused, taking a deep breath in before you spoke. Removing your hands from Luciusâ, you stared at him with the cracked concrete resolve that you walked through life with.Â
âY/n. Y/n L/n is my given name. My father was once an accredited soldier here in Rome, but he tried to overthrow the twins. With that political betrayal came familial shame and poverty. Sinking deeper into poverty I couldnât watch my mother fail. My beauty had always been prominent, so I exchanged my virtue in an effort to clear our debts and save what dignity my mother had left.âÂ
Tears began to well in your eyes as you thought about the orders that were carried out against your family.Â
âThey slaughtered her.â you began, voice trembling like a frayed string.Â
âAs I spent hours severing my pride, they cornered her. There was never a debtâonly a performance of humiliation, a spectacle of shame to the so-called traitor.âÂ
You stood, staring out the cell bars before turning to face him again, your shadow stretching across the stone from the torch on the wall.Â
âMy father raised a viper. A soldier to bear his name in honor. But those tyrantsâthese incompetent rulersâtheyâll soon choke on their arrogance. I will have his head.âÂ
âWho?â
âCaracalla. I may have sold my poise for survival but I will not suffer my health for the pleasure of a rat.âÂ
You sat beside Lucius, your words heavy in the air.Â
âI carry the guilt, a constant companion. I reminisce the fragments of life I had before all of this and now I reminisce of what it felt like to live a life unspoiled by the fear of death. The scars of my servitude are my food for that arena. This isnât about freedom itâs about reclaiming a dream they stole.â
You felt Lucius staring but you didnât dare return the gesture. You were naked, said too much about yourself, you only hoped that you could keep his favor.Â
âWe should get some rest. God knows the entertainment weâll be performing tomorrow.â
Standing up you settled back into your bed, curling your body into a fetal position with your back facing the wall. You tried your best to maneuver the fabric of your dress to cover yourself but soon gave up on the endeavor and just stared at the ground covered in shadows of yellow and orange.Â
~*~
Sleep evaporated in a single breath as the cacophony of clamoring metal and gruff voices jolted you awake. Rubbing the sleep from your eyes, you dressed in the olive garments from yesterday, the scent of sweat and earth still clinging to the fabric. In the corner, a pile of gladiator armor taunted your peace. With a heavy breath escaping you, you braided your hair, coiling it into a bun. Every strand you attached a prayer of strength to. The weight of Luciusâ gaze bore into you, his presence going unnoticed until now. He lingered, his eyes flickering between your own and the twisted knot of hair at your nape.Â
âSomething on your mind?â
âYou mirror her as if sheâs still here.âÂ
You noticed where his eyes were landing and gently touched the bun. A tight-lipped, bitter smile cracking your face. Rolling your tongue around your teeth, you spoke.Â
âWhoever your wife wasâ you murmured, unspoken and unintentional venom in your tone, âdo not look for her in me. Whatever regard you hold her in, I could neverâhonor the shadow of her memory. I am a poison.âÂ
You meant no harm but your words were dripping in acrimony. You hated that throughout your life, you were always seen for something other than yourself. The epitome of you, torn to shreds and left screaming. Y/n was never seen and how could she be? A family name forgotten in a smear campaign and a life lived of shame, what was there to be reveled in? You abhorred that he saw someone much more valuable in you than you deemed yourself worth. You were a ghost. A shallow reminder of what he once loved.Â
The cell thickened with unsaid words, Lucius opened and closed his mouth, betraying the storm of thoughts that swirled within him. He walked toward the cell door, grabbed your blade, and passed it to you with care.
âI see you, Y/n, and your strength. Fight for your name today and do it with intention.â
You nodded, swallowing the bubble of hatred and sorrow in your throat. Standing you grabbed the grip of the blade, steadying its weight in your fingers. You heard the other cell gates opening and you waited to be released. Adrenaline and ferality coursing through your veins.Â
The walk to the arena was short but brutal as the sun scalded your skin. As you stood in the shaded maw of the tunnels, you felt water sloshing at your feet. The rays of the sun blinding your eyes in its reflection. You watched Lucius walk to the front of the group, a commanding presence blanketing the air.Â
âThis is about survival! Survive!â
You followed his lead, wildly unprepared for what was to happen next. The feeling of the water squishing between your toes made your skin crawl but a shiver of fear soon took over as you saw the vessel youâd be fighting on today. Suddenly, the water made sense. You took a seat towards the front awaiting Luciusâ command. Your hands gripped the ore tightly and you looked at the bearish man next to you who greeted you with mockery.Â
âHope your teeth come in handy in the water.âÂ
You stared forward, fire in your eyes. You separated from your body feeling an unknown level of rage sear your being. You heard an announcer on the other side and the gates were released open, water rushing underneath the boat. Quickly scanning your surroundings you noted with disgust how the arena had turned into a spectacle of chaos. Floating vessels on either side filled with poor bastards, desperately seeking a second chance at life in this gauntlet of survival for the entertainment of nameless faces.Â
Lucius commanded the ship valiantly, some men perishing to the sharks or arrows from the opposing side. As the boat was steered to demolish the other ship's ores, you felt a surge of rapid excitement run through you as you watched the shards of wood penetrate their skin. Leaving them in either complete agony or to bleed out amongst their crew.Â
In one more calculated steer, Luciusâ ship barreled into the side of Romanâs warship, debris shooting into the air and clanking back down on the deck. All hell broke loose. You watched Lucius hail down from his post, sword in hand as he slaughtered two men with unusual ease. Youâd seen a rage poor out of him that you never seen actualized in anyone but yourself. Your eyes caught Caracallaâs as he sat in his imperial chair watching with glee as your limbs froze in anger. You were one of the last to flee the boat and the game announcer made sure everyone saw your unease as you comprehended your reality.Â
âIt seems our newest gladiatrix hasnât earned her sea legs.â
Unbridled fear and rage soiled you as you stared at the crowd with wide, brazen eyes. You growled, tightening your grip on your sword, and ran into the chaos with reckless abandon. Your resolve didnât care who your sword struck, just as long as your bloodlust was satisfied. Helmets adorned with hideous plooms made your targets easy to strike and you made it worth your while. Your blade was stained crimson and you clawed at their exposed skin just to ensure their death was agonizing. Flesh caked under your nails, the dried blood becoming sticky in your palms.Â
Baring your teeth, your back was hunched and heaving in the air. You snarled seeking your next victim within the chaos. A blade slashed your arm, leaving fresh garnet to ooze from the wound. You looked up into the emperorsâ box seeing Caracalla leaning forward in his seat pouting at the outcome in front of him. Macrinus was behind him, hands steepled together as he hid a smirk from the rest of his peers. Hearing the announcerâs grating voice echo in the Colosseum, you stalked your next target.Â
âWhat an animal! Sheâs worse than our sharks. Perhaps, we should have put her in the water instead!â
Laughter erupted in the area and you looked around feeling a sense of helplessness begin to wash over you. You were giving them exactly what they wanted. Stomping around on the deck, you were planting your sword into already dead soldiers just to feel the destruction of their flesh through your blade. Your eyes landed on a lone bow with a perfect arrow clattered on top of it. You dropped your blade, the metal clattering against the wood of the ship. Blending in with the chaos around you, you picked up your new weapon and drew your arrow back. Slightly hidden by the tattered sails, your attack was camouflaged by those in front of you. Lining up the point with the emperorâs box you let the arrow spring free. When you dropped the bow and stepped from behind the ragged sail you were defeated to see that the arrow had lodged itself in the side of Caracallaâs throne.Â
âTRAITORIUS!â Emperor Geta cried. His yell acted as a death knell for the arena.Â
Lucius whipped his head around from where the arrow hailed and when his eyes landed on yours he stormed to you shaking you to bring your spirit back from the brink. You heard nothing he said. They would remember you if it was the last thing you did. Your eyes were locked in on the imperial daises relishing in the fear that briefly flashed their faces.Â
~*~
Retired to your cell, the air was thick between you two. You avoided his gaze and didnât dare to speak. You had cleaned yourself prior, but you were still picking at flecks of dried blood under your nails.Â
âThat was heedless what you did today.â
âI said, Iâd have his head. I missed. The fear he held filled me well. Tomorrow is a new day.âÂ
âAnd what if they saw the attack, what revenge have you then?â His tone grew more accusatory as he stood, his figure imposing. You spoke to the ground, not having the strength to fight with him.
âThen at least I died trying. Something my father wasnât granted the courtesy of.â
Lucius paused, trying to find the right words.
âYou fought like a storm.â
You raised your head to face him, surprised by his change of tone. You silenced the flutter of happiness you felt from the praise, but your small smile didnât go unnoticed.Â
âA storm drowns as easily as it conquers. I was blinded by rage today. They got exactly what they wanted.âÂ
Luciusâ frame softened as he sat next to you and you traced the stitches of your battle wounds. It suddenly became usually silent within the camp, the crackle of a fire pit out in the quad of the prison, the burning bark of the torch, and the occasional shuffle from a guard were all that echoed through the halls.Â
âYouâll ruin your skin if you keep at it like that. Leave it be, y/n. Youâve endured enough today.â The flicker of care that painted his words was the antithesis of his rough exterior. It challenged you and your vulnerability.Â
âAnd if I don't?â your breath shaky in its opposition. âWhat would it matter?â
âIt matters to me,â he spoke quickly. A note of something raw in his tone. You turned to him, the silence that filled the cell now was an entirely different energy. Startled by the vulnerability etched into his face and the weight of his gaze, you were stripped of your defenses. The shell you encased yourself in crumbled to dust, exposing the fragile girl beneath. Your body moved before your mind and you scooted closer to him, your shoulders brushing feeling the heat radiate off him.
Lucius exhaled, a sound that harnessed the weight of everything unsaid. His hand came to rest on yours, the gesture done out of harmony rather than dominance. The scruff of his beard tickled your forehead as you raised your face towards his. In the soft glow of the torchlight, both of your eyes said a thousand words in complete silenceâthen your lips met. Not with haste but with an aching tenderness that your soul burned for. The outside world ceased to exist, enraptured with one another in this moment.
The kiss started soft but your breaths soon became heavy, vacuuming air through your nostrils out of fear that if your lips disconnected this moment would disappear. Lucius moved his hands to capture your waist and slotted his hand under your thighs to move you into his lap. It was then that you broke the kiss, uncertainty filling your being once again.Â
âWhatâs wrong?â Concern laced in his tone, afraid that he made you uncomfortable. You sighed, feeling unwanted emotion rise viciously up your throat like heated bile.Â
âI want this to be more than just a fleeting moment. I donât wish for you to see me as the whore theyâve so harshly crafted, nor to feel like a conquest for youâa prize so easily won.â Your voice was shaky as you spoke, unable to hide the waves of emotion well. Lucius caressed your sides, soothing you as you sat in the pit of regret and sorrow of what you had done in life. Your head hung, but not for long as Luciusâ thumb and forefinger raised your head to look at him.Â
âDo not tether yourself to that title. It is not chains of eternity that shackle you to it. Y/nâit is a false truth whispered through the minds of shallow men to make you small. To me, you are no more a whore than a flame is a shadow. Your light burns through the weathering of rain, igniting your strength.â He paused, his eye contact unwavering to show that every word he spoke held the weight of complete veracity.Â
âIf you wish to stop, say the word. But know thisâmy desire is not conditional, no debts or games to be played. What happens here is your command.â
Luciusâ hand came up to wipe the tear that you hadnât realized fell. It was overwhelming to feel such acceptance. You believed every word and let yourself soften into his embrace, wrapping your hands around his neck and playing with the hair at the nape of his neck.Â
âThank youâIâŠIwant this. I want you.â
His lips found yours, this kiss more searing than the last. Your hands tangled themselves into his hair and your hips rolled in rhythm against his own. His hands trailed down the sides of your curves before finding refuge in the fat of your ass, squeezing the flesh with zeal.
His hips stuttered as he squeezed your flesh and you could feel the bulge beginning to form underneath his tunic. You rolled into the feeling, both of your breaths labored in wanton desire. You pulled your lips away only to pepper kisses down the length of his neck, swiping your tongue up before you bit the lobe of his ear. The faint taste of sweat fired you up even more and you couldnât get close enough to him.Â
Curling your fingers into the fabric that clung to his chest, you pulled him close suffocating his lips to yours. In a moment, he had positioned your body so that your back was laid down on the bed and Lucius hovered over you. Taking in your form for every strand of beauty you were worthâa dangerous hunger flashing in his eyes.Â
Your hair was splayed underneath you and Lucius moved a few strands away from your face before placing kisses on the length of your jaw and down the column of your neck. Lucius placed a lingering kiss upon your lips before resting his forehead against your own. His breath mingled with your own as if to rid you of all the pain and uncertainty you had felt throughout your life. He wanted to replace all those negative feelings with something raw and unbreakable.Â
You trailed your hands down the front of his body before looking back into his icy eyes, seeing a new emotion swirl in them. Your actions were no longer reigned by caution but falling victim to a deep, unspoken yearning.Â
âLet us be whole in this moment,â you whispered, the words dripping in true desire. âLet our bodies tangle and relish in the ecstasy.â
Lucius didnât answer with words, but instead captured your lips in a kiss that stole your breath. It devoured and soothed you in one fell swoop. His touch was firm, but tender, massaging your body with something more than lust. This was a testament of humanity amidst the terror of your world.Â
With ease, Lucius removed you from your clothes, leaving your body to be painted by the distant flames. When he stared at your naked form without saying a word, you soon grew self-conscious and wanted to cover your body from his raking eyes. Catching your hands in his, he gave you all the reassurance you needed.Â
âDonât hide from me. Let me see. One should feel so blessed to lay their eyes on you, like this.âÂ
Lucius kissed down the trunk of your body, leaving flowers to bloom in their wake as he made a path down the valley of your breasts. When he reached the area above the mound of your sex, he paused and looked up at you for permissionâeyes showing you a hunger youâd never seen before. You nodded as you gently spread your legs wider, giving him complete access to you. His eyes were blown wide as he dipped his head to meet your petals. His nose teased the top of your clit and the anticipation was driving you mad. Before you had the chance to beg him to touch you, his tongue swiped up your folds, collecting a puddle of arousal on his tongue.Â
Your body shivered in shock and pleasure, your hips jolting forward and your back arching slightly. You threw your head back, shuddered air falling past your lips. Your hands immediately found solace in Luciusâ hair, gripping the strands as he lapped at your garden. Soon your hips were rolling in rhythm with his tongue and you could feel the heat begin to pool in your lower stomach. Your muscles tighten and release with each passing second of foretaste.Â
â...LuciusâŠI,â he lifted his head only for a moment to shush you. âIâve got you. Cum for me y/n.â
You let the feeling of pleasure swallow you whole as he dipped two fingers into your cavern, your walls sucking him in greedily. The added stimulation brought you over the precipice of your rapture and your body wriggled with euphoria against Luciusâ mouth. When your spirit settled back into your body, you giggled breathlessly. Second nature soon taking over as you lifted yourself from the bed.
You moved forward, your hand feeling his cock through the tunic and you felt a salacious urge brew rapidly within you. Lucius quickly rid himself of his clothes, his sculpted body on display for you to indulge in. When you moved yourself to your knees and began to return the oral favor, Luciusâ hand stopped your head from its descent and guided you to look at him.Â
âNo,â his voice was laced with desire but thick with command. You could see his resolve crumbling a bit in front of you. âThis is not about me. Itâs for you. Youâve done more than enough in this life, let me return a fraction of that and allow me to give it all to you.â Lucius pushed you and laid you gently back down. His face rested against your own, his lips grazing the shell of your ear as he whispered into it.Â
âI want to hear your pleasure, not just give into mine. You owe me not a thing,â he paused feeling a bit of his dominance morph into a teasing leviathan.Â
âYou want this?âÂ
You nodded rapidly, your hands wrapping around his arms just needing to feel his skin against your own. You looked down between your bodies. His cock hanging heavy off of his frame, tip flushed with desire. Your mouth watered at the sight of it, needing to feel his length somewhere inside of you. Lucius swiped his tip against your folds, soaking his shaft in your arousal just to show you exactly who was in control.Â
His tip pushed at the entrance of your heat, your brow furrowed in ardent zeal as you squeezed around the small bit of length that was inside of you. Lucius held the base of his cock guiding it to the hilt until your bodies clapped at the connection. He brought his arms down to rest on his elbows, bringing his face closer to yours to watch your expressions contort in fervor. You couldnât help the sound that escaped you as he buried himself inside of you and on instinct you covered your mouth to muffle the sounds.Â
Lucius removed your hand from your mouth, his smile wicked as he shoved his tongue in his cheek.Â
âLet them hear. Serves them right for locking us in a cage together.âÂ
He began to move, his thrusts deep and slow. Closing your eyes, you felt every ridge and curve of his cock. Dragging out your pleasure in the most beautiful way imaginable. The clap at the end of each thrust was unmistakable and you couldnât quite bring yourself to care. You almost wanted everyone to hear the lustful wreckage he was throwing you in.Â
Opening your eyes, the closeness of his face caused you to writhe against him and moan out. The sounds amplified by the stone in the cell, leaving everyone else outside at the mercy of your cries.Â
âLose yourself in me.âÂ
Lucius pushed himself up so that he could grab your hips and deliver more calculated thrusts. Each time he pushed in, you could feel his tip kiss your cervix with pure carnality. Your moans were low in timbre but grew more frequent as you felt the knot in your loins begin to tighten at the new speed.Â
There was a sheen of sweat across Luciusâ chest, a bead dripping down his brow. He brought himself back down and tortured you with the same bruising pace.Â
âCum for me. Cum with me.âÂ
He captured your lips in his reminding you that this was more than just lust at work. Your sounds were swallowed by his mouth as the heart of your wanton need contracted around his length in lascivious rhapsody. He fucked you through your orgasm before pulling out and painting your stomach in his alabaster drippings.Â
Lucius hovered over you, taking in what just happened. As you held eye contact with him, you snuck your hand down to the milky portrait and scooped up some of his salty sap. Bringing it to your mouth, you sucked on your finger, savoring the taste. He groaned at the sight and you smiled at him when you released your finger with a pop sound.Â
Lucius stood up, grabbing the poor excuse of a blanket off his bed, and used the corner to clean you of him. Wiping the stain of his cum in the dirt, he threw the sheet back to his bed. Grabbing your robes and motioning you to stand up, he covered your body.Â
âNo one else needs to see you like this.âÂ
The gesture was warm and his words held a sense of finality to them. As if he were counting on the fact that youâd never go back to the life you lived before. Lucius covered himself in his tunic. Pheromones, and earth flying off the fabric as he lay down on the bed. He opened one arm and nodded his head toward himself to motion you to lie down with him. The fit was tight but that didnât matter at this moment.Â
The quiet lingered, heavy with everything you hadnât said. Luciusâ breath came slow and steady as you traced patterns over his body, his hand soothing your armâan unspoken promise in such gentle touches.Â
âYou deserve more than survival. Iâll fight for that. Iâll fight for you.âÂ
The weight of his words settled in your chest, and you allowed yourself to believe for the first time in a long time. To believe that the life ahead could be yours. Not stolen or dictated. With the warmth of his steady presence, you curled into him. Letting the moment take root in the deepest parts of you. Whatever lay ahead, you knew you wouldnât face them alone.Â

summary: in a trade gone bad, youâve been sought out by macrinus due to your animalistic combat skills. stuck in the camp of gladiators, Hanno is assigned your sparring partner. your existence is a bitter reminder of what he lost but in hate we find love.Â

âYour name. Itâs not Nero, is it?â
Your body separated itself from your mind and you stared at Hanno with fear and uncertainty. Your birth name was shallow on your tongue but heavy in your throat, begging for someone to see you for more than just your flesh. To attach an identity to the body more than an insult. You shook your head and turned to the makeshift window toward the ceiling, seeing a navy blue begin to stroke the sky in its image. Praying that something would give you the strength to share yourself the same way you had done when it was at the expense of others. Hannoâs hand encased your own and brought you back to the conversation as the gesture startled you.Â
âIâm not your enemy. Remember weâre 'barbarians', only the two of us.âÂ
Sighing, he swallowed his own pride and revealed his belly to you.Â
âHanno is not my name, and Iâve not always been Romeâs favorite beast.
Lucius let go of your hands and brought one of his calloused ones to his face. Rubbing the stress-ridden features away as the scratch of his beard caught your ears. You watched him attentively, waiting on bated breath for him to speak his next words. He leaned closer, the gap between you seeming to have never existed. He gazed into your eyes, searching for something you knew not of until he uttered them in the next breath.Â
âYou remind me of her.â His voice was nearly a whisper. Something youâd miss again if you werenât so focused on him. With more chest to his tone he admitted,Â
âMy wife. She burned like you do. A flame that never quit dancing. A warrior who refused to bowâthey stole her spark. The same day they made me a slave. A bitter goodbye, I shared, but when I look at you, I see her ghost.â
There was a touch of venom in his last words. They seemed to have meant good will but the taste was sour in your mouth. A moment fleeting once again. Even in your vulnerability, your search for someone seeing you for you, you were a reminder of something else. You paused, taking a deep breath in before you spoke. Removing your hands from Luciusâ, you stared at him with the cracked concrete resolve that you walked through life with.
Summary: After your first encounter, you attend the next games to watch Lucius fight, and celebrate his victory with him after.

The roar of the crowd was near deafening as you made your way to the Emperorâs box behind Queen Lucilla, General Acacius, and Senator Gracchus. Hundreds of feet pounded in a war-like rhythm, all eager â or more like absolutely salivating â for a good spectacle. Snapping and jeering like rabid, bloodthirsty dogs.
You would never understand that insatiable, sadistic need to see anotherâs brutal destruction. Nobody ever thought they would watch somebody they loved be subjected to it, just strangers who werenât really people in their eyes. But it was more common than most would like to admit, the sand forever stained not just with crimson, but also with the salt of mourning tears.
You hid your unease behind a cool, placid mask, smiling back at Senator Gracchus as he glanced at you over his shoulder. He had been curious when you had first requested to attend the games with him, but having just found out about Prince Luciusâ return and rising fame in the arena, he was amused at your antics.Â
Your patron might be old, but he was no fool. Gladiators always caught the eyes of pretty, young girls like you, especially ones such as Lucius. It was really no wonder youâd want to see his glory for yourself, so he had conceded if only to indulge you.
And when heâd helped you off the litter that had carried you to the Colosseum, he had not been surprised to notice you were hiding a garland of myrtle inside your sleeve. A common enough offering to Venus, goddess of love. He made no mention of it, though, content to just watch how things played out.Â
Once youâd arrived at the box, each of you knelt in front of the twin emperors and kissed their rings. Emperor Geta smiled down at you in that enigmatic, impish way of his, but his brother mostly ignored you. Not that you really minded escaping his notice, though. Better than his scorn or, worse, his interest.
âLet us begin,â Geta said, his excitement palpable as he rose to address the crowd. âWe are all in for a real treat.â
You went to stand next to Queen Lucilla, sensing that her tension matched yours, even if she was perfectly poised and regal. Sheâd had many more years of experience hiding her true emotions, after all. You shared a small smile with her, both silently recognizing it as a moment of solidarity.
âCitizens of Rome!â Geta called out, his voice rising above the crowd. âToday, in honor of General Marcus Acacius' triumph in taking over Numidia, you will be witnessing no mere games!â
A heavy, metallic noise resounded throughout the arena as it seemed to shift, the ground underneath you shaking fiercely. But what you heard next made dread sink into your stomach like a heavy stone â rushing water. A floodâs worth of it. Soon enough, the arena was immersed and massive sharks were fed into it, menacingly circling about. At opposite sides, great iron gates groaned open to reveal two war vessels flying different colors â Roman and Barbarian.
And captaining one of them was a figure you recognized all too well, even at a great distance. You felt as if a fist were closing in around your throat, robbing you of breath. Instinctively, you stepped forward to try to get a better look, but Senator Gracchus put a hand on your back to stop you from going past the thrones.Â
This seemed to anchor you back to the present, and you reminded yourself that the Lucius that you saw in the arena was not the tender one, but the fearsome warrior.
Let him live, you thought pleadingly, clutching the garland tighter. Oh, Gods, please let him live.
General Acacius waved at the crowd, muscles tensed even as he smiled, thanking them for the great honor. Emperor Caracalla, infected by the madness of bloodthirsty enthusiasm, jumped to his feet.Â
âIt is war!â he cried, smiling sadistically from ear to ear. âReal war!â
If it was even possible, the crowd roared louder, the cacophony railing against your eardrums. Queen Lucilla clenched her jaw, gripping the headrest of one of the thrones tightly. With a shaking hand, you accepted the wine Senator Gracchus offered you and clinked your glass against his.
The two vessels circled each other closely, quickly searching for any weaknesses and readying to strike. The Roman fleet was cocky, though, moving in without a shred of uncertainty. The Barbarian vessel narrowly missed their initial attack, but they came close enough that a few Roman fighters jumped onto their boat.
The loud clash of swords followed, a few bodies falling overboard, some still living. The waters bloomed crimson, the sharks going into a frenzy at the scent of blood. You spotted Lucius again in the chaos, driving his sword through the last invading Roman fighter and yelling out commands to his fellow gladiators.Â
Both Emperors leaned over the edge of the balcony, shouting and jeering along with the rest of the Roman populace. General Acacius hovered near them, but he watched as somberly as the rest of you. The vessels came close again, but in a cunning move, Lucius made his rowers pull the oars at the last moment before impact.Â
The oars of the Roman vessel tore into the side of the Barbarian one, tipping it sideways but effectively getting them both stuck together. Fighters from both sides clashed once more, desperation seeming to take place as both boats were threatening to capsize.Â
Without noticing, you grasped Senator Gracchusâ arm as you waited for the outcome. He placed a hand over yours, watching just as raptly. Numbers dwindled quickly in favor of the Barbarian fighters, and you felt like you could almost sight in relief. But what happened next was so fast that you almost thought youâd imagined it.
Before anyone could actually be declared victor, an archer loosed an arrow that sailed towards the emperorâs box, landing between their thrones. Chaos ensued, the two of them crying in outrage and surprise. Immediately, General Acacius and the Praetorian guard moved to safely evacuate them.Â
âLetâs go, all of you!â he commanded, voice booming.
Senator Gracchus ushered you and Queen Lucilla to follow as some guards encircled the three of you. You tried getting one last look at the arena but saw nothing more than the splintered masts of the vessels. Thankfully, Lucius was still alive, at least for the time being.
But just in case, you sent a prayer up to the Gods that nobody else noticed he was the one to shoot the arrow.Â
â--------------
A small torch was your only source of illumination as you navigated through the streets of Rome to the prison where Lucius and his fellow gladiators were being kept. After relaying Luciusâ demand to see you, Queen Lucilla insisted on sending one of her guards with you. He marched at your side, one hand resting on the hilt of his sword, ready for any possible assailants leaping forth from the dark.Â
You hid your face under a hooded cloak and let your companion speak to the jailâs guard as you arrived at the iron gates. The jail was cavernous, damp, and cool, and oppressive in the darkness of night. You shuddered, unable to fathom being imprisoned in such a place, even for a day. Your heart ached for those who already were, ignorant of when â or if â they might be released.
He guided you to Luciusâ cell, opened the large, heavy padlock, and let you in. Both guards waited outside of the cell to give you some privacy, and you removed your hood so Lucius could see you. He stood up from his cot, a smile slowly breaking out on his handsome face.
You let him take you into his arms and kiss you, leaving you swaying on your feet. You pulled away just enough to look him over as if reassuring yourself he was alive and all in one piece. His smile didnât falter under your assessment â in fact, it seemed like he was proud to have proved himself to you, keeping the promise heâd made at the bathhouse.Â
âToday was⊠I donât even have the words to describe it,â you said, hugging him close. âWhen I realized it would be no ordinary fight, I feared for you⊠I still do.â
He placed one of your palms on his chest, right over his heart. âYou have nothing to fear. Iâm here.â
You glanced over your shoulder to make sure the guards werenât watching, then lowered your voice to a whisper.
âWhat you did at the end, it was beyond foolish,â you said, shaking your head slightly. âI made an offering to Fortuna for all the favor she bestowed on you today. I do not think anybody else realized, or else we would not be standing here.â
âAnother reason to celebrate,â he said, not bothered in the slightest. âPerhaps it was even luckier that the arrow didnât strike true.â
âYou really meant to kill one of the Emperors?âÂ
He shook his head. âNot them. Acacius. But in reality, I wouldnât have minded if either of them had fallen.â
âI suppose it was a good thing the rest of us were out of range,â you murmured, looking down.
âI would never harm you,â he said gravely, grasping your chin and making you look him in the eye. âNever.â
You were nearly floored by the sincerity in his gaze, but even more so by the passion you found there, as well. It went beyond lust, even. Nobody had ever looked at you in such a way. You leaned forward and kissed him gently, letting him know that you trusted him.
âI know, Lucius,â you said.
âThen, let us not concern ourselves with anything, or anyone, else for now,â he said. âTomorrow, the sun will rise and Rome will still be Rome. In the meantime, there is only us.â
The echo of his words at the bathhouse made you smile softly. A part of you wanted to ask more questions about his wanting to kill Acacius, but there was a slight edge of finality to his tone. Regardless, it wasnât like you wanted to waste what little time you had together lecturing him.Â
You reached up to undo your cloak, intently holding his gaze, and let it fall on his cot. âClaim your prize, then, fierce warrior. I am all yours.â
With a glance outside, he extinguished the torch in his cell and closed the distance between you. His lips melded against yours desperately, tongue slipping into your mouth. With ease, he lifted you into his arms, your legs wrapping around his waist.
He sat on the cot so you could straddle him, his hands wandering down your back and settling on your ass, giving it an appreciative squeeze. He groaned into your mouth, his chest rumbling against yours. He pulled your dress over your head as best as he could, leaving you in your thin shift.Â
His hands traced the curves of your hips and waist, like a sculptor working clay into a masterpiece. He cupped your breasts, your nipples poking through the fabric, and you leaned back to give him access. He managed to pull the shift down to your midsection, revealing your chest. He trailed open-mouthed kisses on your sternum, moving lower.Â
His tongue teasingly flicked one of your nipples, making you suck a breath through your teeth. He lavished them both with attention, the graze of his teeth and the pinch of his fingers igniting a fire within you. You continued trying to be as quiet as possible, even if he made it extremely difficult.
You reached between your bodies to palm his growing erection over his tunic. His hips bucked upward, seeking more of your touch. One of his hands cupped the back of your neck, leaning your forehead against his.
âHow does it feel,â he rasped. âTo be the only one who can disarm me so completely?â
You felt a heady, triumphant rush, nipping at his bottom lip. âIâll keep the secret for you.â
He chuckled, surrendering to another fervent, dizzying kiss from you. You hiked up your shift as he lifted you slightly so he could free his cock from beneath his tunic. You spat on your hand and reached down to spread it on the sensitive head, moving to grip the base so you could line it up with the entrance of your cunt. You sank down slowly, your face so close to his you seemed to share breath.Â
âJust like that,â he groaned, hands gripping your hips tightly. âI needed this more than you knowâŠâ
âLet me take care of you,â you whispered, letting out a breathy moan, head tipping back in ecstasy.Â
You felt like you were filled to the brim by him, clouding all your other senses. He slid in and out of you easily, your arousal dripping down his length and pooling on his sac. His mouth was on your chest again, your fingers weaving through his hair.Â
âOh, LuciusâŠâ You sighed dreamily.Â
He pulsed at the sound of his name on your lips. In order to prolong the pleasure for both of you, he rolled you onto your back on the cot, keeping himself sheathed inside of you. He pushed your legs back, driving your knees past your elbows, his weight pinning you down.Â
His thrusts were deep and hard, but not fast, intent on letting you feel him in his entirety. Your face contorted with pleasure, the intensity of it all nearly too much for you to bear. He groaned your name with the intensity of a supplicant. His sac tightened as he felt you squeeze around him, knowing he wouldnât last too long no matter how much he tried.Â
âSay my name again,â he said, eyes blazing. âSay who you belong to.â
âLucius,â you panted deliriously, tears gathering on your lashes. âAh, Lucius!â
His thrusts picked up the pace, frenzied, the sound of flesh slapping together unmistakable. You cupped his face in your hands as you felt yourself coming apart under him, trembling. A cry threatened to escape you, but he covered your mouth with one hand, muffling it.Â
He shushed you gently, but his breathing became ragged as he reached oblivion himself. You felt warmth flooding your cunt, his last thrusts shallow, fucking his spend deeper inside you and making sure no drop was wasted. He uncovered your mouth and kissed you as if in apology, both of you dazed and content.
He rolled over to lie very closely at your side, the cot barely big enough for the two of you. His strong arms enveloped you once more, making you feel safe perhaps for the first time in your life. There were still a few hours before sunrise â before Rome and everything else that came along with it became real again â so you could languish with him for a little while longer.
The last thing you wanted was to untangle yourself from him, anyway, instead nuzzling closer. Your fingers softly traced patterns on his forearm as you pondered what this might mean for the two of you.
âDo you⊠really intend to stake your claim on me?â You asked tentatively. âOutside of this?â
You deliberately avoided any specific labels, not foolish enough to presume anything. Things were still precarious and new, but you already felt bonded to him in a way you couldnât truly explain, and a part of you had to believe he felt the same way.
âOf course,â he said, but seemed hesitant to say more.
You shifted onto your belly to look at him, his fingers now tracing up and down your spine lazily.Â
âAre you certain?â
He nodded, sighing deeply. Youâd already known there was a lot weighing on him that he did not speak about, and while you didnât want to add to his burden, you needed to know this. If only to save yourself some pain.
âThere are a great many things at stake right now, including my freedom,â he said, looking up at the ceiling pensively. âMuch of what I still have to do is dangerous, and only the Gods know the outcome of it all. I intend to do everything in my power to protect you, in the meantime, and I cannot allow you to become a part of what must happen. I cannot risk losing you.â
You weighed his words for a moment, then nodded in understanding. âYou are lucky, patience is a virtue I possess in great quantities.â
He looked back at you and kissed the tip of your nose affectionately.Â
âI donât make promises I donât intend to keep,â he said, lacing his fingers through yours. âAnd I can promise you that as soon as I walk a free man, the first one I will run to is you.â

-----------
It had been a very long time since heâd been somewhere so luxurious. One of Romeâs finest bathhouses brought echoes of a comfortable life long past in the emperorâs palace. The marble pillars and fine mosaic floors, the detailed frescoes on the walls, and a large thermal pool all for himself.
Then other flashes of memory came to him â his motherâs kindness, his fatherâs armor, his uncle Comodusâ booming voice, and the cross of their swordsâŠ
He shucked his heavy breastplate and immediately felt the steam on his already sweat-slick skin. He let out a long sigh, closing his eyes for a moment. If only memories were so easy to get rid of, he might not always feel so tormented.
Lavishness was not something he had ever actively sought out, even if he was entitled to it as the direct descendant to the throne, but it was strange to think he was once accustomed to it. So much had happened since his forced departure, like a hundred lives melding into one.
Now, after a long, grueling fight with a mighty rhinoceros and its fierce rider, he wanted nothing more than to luxuriate in the warm water until his head swam and his muscles no longer ached so badly.
But then he noticed you standing on one side of the pool, a carafe of wine and a platter of dates, cheese, and nuts waiting on a low table next to you. You smiled as your eyes locked and Luciusâ back immediately straightened. Not much took him by surprise anymore, but this certainly had.
âWho are you?â He asked, curious rather than irritated at your presence.
You inclined your head genially. âYou may call me whatever you like.â
He huffed in amusement, giving you a once-over. âVery well, then. And who sent you here?â
âMacrinus wanted nothing but the best company for you, his champion,â you said, serving him some wine. âI am to be your prize, along with this bath.â
His eyebrows lifted infinitesimally and he looked away in an almost bashful manner. His profile was proud and handsome, kissed by the sun and the strikes of his opponents. He had the face of a hero history would always remember â Or at least you would, certainly.
He was hesitant at first, unsure if he could trust anything that came from Macrinus. But as he took another look at you, your allure was too great for him not to be stirred. He could tread carefully, but he didnât really want to deny himself pleasure, however fleeting it may be.
âI take it your company is quite coveted around here?â He asked, approaching to accept the wine you offered.
You nodded in response, fingertips barely brushing his as he took the glass. He held your gaze as he took a sip and you almost lost yourself in the infinite blue of his eyes.Â
âBy the likes of who?â He asked.
âFierce gladiators such as yourself,â you said pointedly, unable to help your wandering eyes from finding the rippling muscles of his chest. âMerchants. Senators. Even emperor Geta has had his fill of me, but Caracalla was content with just watching.â
âLet us not speak of them now,â he said, shaking his head and grimacing at the names of the bloodthirsty twin emperors. âWithin these walls, it is just the two of us. Nothing more.â
You nodded in understanding as he set down his glass on the table. âWould you like me to help you finish undressing?â
âI can manage,â he said, but now his eyes roamed appreciatively over your form, barely covered by a nearly see-through shift. âBut I should like to help you, so you may join me.â
âHow very kind of you,â you grinned, a salacious edge to your tone.Â
He stepped even closer, reaching to unclasp the bronze brooch at your shoulder. The shift fell in a puddle of fabric at your feet, your body completely bare underneath. He let out a small, shuddering breath, fingers lightly tracing one of your clavicles.
For a moment, his expression was clouded as something crossed his mind. He stared off into the middle distance, but before he could really lose himself, you decided to intervene. You pulled him in, one hand cupping the back of his head as you went on your tiptoes and brought your lips close to his ear.
âWhatever youâd like to forget, I should really like to help you,â you whispered.
âEverything,â he rasped, one callused hand grasping your hip, while the other gently tilted your head to one side so your lips would meet his.
You tasted the sweet wine on his tongue and breathed him in. He smelled of the arena â blood and sand and sweat. It was not unfamiliar to you, but it was heady coming off of him, fueling your growing desire.Â
Deftly, he managed to reach between your bodies to undo his pteruges and the loincloth underneath, both joining your shift on the floor. You felt the hardness of his own want against your lower abdomen, but he made no move to hasten things along.Â
âCome now, let us wash the day off of you,â you said softly, pulling away to guide him into the water.
You waited by the edge for him to submerge himself first, watching the way his muscles worked as he walked. He had the grace of a warrior, as if poised for attack at any moment. You almost shudder at his deep groan of contentment, leaning back against the edge. Sliding closer, you massaged his broad shoulders to try and relieve some of his tension. His hand found your calf, caressing it.Â
He closed his eyes and let himself be pampered, your touch transporting him far away, beyond even the shores of Ostia. He thought of your luminous eyes, the honeyed taste of your lips, and the smell of rose oil on your skin⊠What lovely comfort you offered. He wanted more of you and he suspected he would still not have enough.
If winning meant earning moments like this, with you, then he would never let himself be defeated in the arena. Or elsewhere, for that matter.
âMy very own Venus Pompeiana,â he said softly, turning around so he could slot his body between your legs and face you. âThe Gods seem to be favoring me greatly today.â
You cupped his face tenderly. âSomething tells me they will continue to do so, too.â
He grinned, eyes heavy-lidded as they dropped to your lips. âTell me, did you emerge from the seafoam, too?â
You laughed, delighted at his words. âYes, I am salt, and brine, and pearls made flesh.â
His strong arms enveloped you, pulling you into the water with him. His lips found yours again and your legs wrapped around his hips, anchoring yourself to him. He submerged both of you for a moment and you chuckled against his lips when you resurfaced.
He kissed you like he might never be able to do so again â like a desperate lover forced to say goodbye before sailing off to war. Your fingers threaded through his damp curls, his beard tickling the lower half of your face. Your head swam and you wished you could spend an eternity there, in that moment.
You let his hands wander a little, getting bolder by the minute, but then you pulled away and playfully swam away from him. A safe distance away, you splashed some water at him, inciting him to give chase.Â
He swam after you unhurriedly, his head low in the water so that you mostly saw his eyes. You could tell he was smiling from the way they creased at the corners, and you felt a thrill low in your spine as he drew closer. It reminded you of a crocodile pursuing its prey, biding its time before the right moment came along.Â
A nervous giggle escaped you as you backed away, even daring to splash more water in his direction. He slipped under the water and for a delirious moment of uncertainty, you thought your heart might leap out of your chest. You searched for any sign of him, but the water was cloudy and concealed him well.
Suddenly, you felt the graze of teeth on your hip and you cried out, startled. Lucius re-emerged, shaking water from his hair and cornering you against the edge of the pool.
âGot you now,â he rasped, pressing you against him and bending to kiss your throat.
âMercy,â you gasped, smiling wide as you amiably submitted to his attention. âOh, please have mercy.â
He lifted your hips further so that his cock rested against your folds. You tried to move against him as best as the angle would allow and he helped guide you with one hand on your hip.Â
âMercy?â he said against your jaw, the deep timbre of his voice like music to your ears. âYou see how youâve got me? Iâve not had any mercy from you.â
You grinned slyly. âYou thought Iâd yield so easily?â
He hummed, pretending to think about it. âNever crossed my mind.â
âActually, you make it very hard not to, as much as I like to play,â you conceded, biting your lip.
He chuckled, sucking in a breath through his teeth as he fought the urge to slip inside you and claim you for himself. But not yet, of course, as he wanted to play with you a little while longer too.Â
âShall we put you to the test?â
He lifted you out of the water and sat you back on the edge. With one broad palm on your sternum, he gently pushed you backward. Instinctively, your legs hiked up, but you let him be the one to spread them.
He let out a low groan at the sight, his gaze incandescent as it met yours. He kissed your calf, then the inside of your knee, and steadily progressed up your inner thigh as he propped himself half out of the water.
Your hips shifted as he got close to his target, but then he moved to your other leg, repeating the same torturously slow process. You propped up on your elbows to give him a slightly annoyed look and he grinned cheekily.
âHowâs that for mercy?â He asked, but before you could respond, his head dipped and his tongue finally found where you were aching.
A breathy Oh escaped you as your back arched, fingers digging into his curls once more. He was just as skilled with his mouth as with a blade, easily finding the tenderest, most sensitive spots. He had you squirming on the tiled floors, the tip of his tongue tracing circular patterns on your clit.
âGods,â he moaned, the taste of you only making him hungrier and greedier for more.
You tried to grind against his face, chasing the waves of pleasure that already crested over you. His beard added just enough friction to create another layer of stimulation, and soon enough, your eyes were searching for constellations at the back of your skull.
âLucius, oh, Lucius,â you panted. âYouâre gonna make meâ Ah!â
He felt triumphant at your trembling under him, more honey flowing from you and onto his tongue. You made soft, almost pleading sounds, holding onto his head as if to anchor yourself. He groaned, prolonging your pleasure for as long as you both could stand it. His blood felt near boiling and yet the only cure for it was you.Â
Ravenous and near feral, he pulled himself out of the water and crawled over you. Finally â mercifully â he slid into you with ease, going slow and deep at first so you could adjust to him. He watched your reactions closely, feeling himself twitch inside of you â so warm and soft and perfect for him.
But that wasn't the only way he wanted to have you, and every time either of you grew closer to the edge, he changed positions. His stamina was astounding, especially considering he had been fighting for his life only a few hours earlier.
It wasnât until you were on top of him, his hands aiding the gyrations of your hips, that you could get revenge for all his teasing. You set the pace, finding an angle where you could grind your clit against his pelvis with each move. His eyes roamed over you reverently, like you were the true goddess of love, and he was your subject worshipping at your temple. Sweat slick skin, the bounce of your breasts, your bared throat as you tilted your head backward in ecstasy⊠He found divinity in all of this.
His self-composure began to dissolve as his grip on you tightened. His brows furrowed and his mouth was slack, his moans spilling out wantonly. He was beautiful, so truly beautiful.
âDonât stop,â he groaned, his hips positioning upwards to meet your movements.Â
As you happily complied, leaning forward to kiss him, he lifted his torso to meet you halfway. He cupped the back of your head as his body tensed, spilling his seed inside you hotly. You came harder than before, your cunt squeezing him tightly in time with the twitching of his cock.Â
Spent, you collapsed on his chest, the two of you sharing a laugh, high on endorphins. He wiped a stray strand of hair from your forehead with even more tenderness than you thought youâd ever experienced. He felt like the most fortunate man in the world, having found something so good in a place as hostile as Rome. He wouldnât let you go so easily.Â
âCome to the next games,â he said softly before he could really think about it.
You hesitated. As much as youâd love to see him in action, you didnât think you could bear to see him get hurt⊠Or worse.Â
âYou want me to watch you fight?â You asked, trying to keep the fear away from your expression.Â
âI want you to see me win,â he said without a shred of doubt. âThat way, you can be sure that no man can stop me from claiming my reward right after.â
You shuddered, biting down a giddy grin. âIâll be there for you to find me, my champion.â
