TIME magazine has heard enough from feminists and would prefer it if they stop asking influential celebrities about their views on it. In their fourth annual “word banishment poll,” they ask readers to vote on which supposedly overused word should be banned in 2015. This year, they chose to include the word “feminist.” Their reasoning boils down to a suggestion that feminists should remain in the closet, so to speak.
You have nothing against feminism itself, but when did it become a thing that every celebrity had to state their position on whether this word applies to them, like some politician declaring a party? Let’s stick to the issues and quit throwing this label around like ticker tape at a Susan B. Anthony parade.
If we’re “banned” from identifying as feminists and from talking publicly about feminism…how exactly are we supposed to “stick to the issues”? Feminism is important because patriarchy is oppressive to women. If we stay silent, nothing changes. In fact, things are likely to get worse. Patriarchy has been around for so long that it’s viewed as normal- but it’s not. How can we be expected to challenge and change the norm if we can’t talk openly about alternatives? TIME claims they “have nothing against feminism itself,” but if that were true, they would be encouraging discussion instead of trying to stifle it.
