Is there a reason why Labs seem to be the hungriest dog breed?

Labradors typically are highly food motivated and will eat all sorts of things, but they’re not alone in that behaviour. Beagles are right up there as well, as are certain pugs, but the Labrador is probably more popular and being larger can stash away a larger volume of food.

Plus, it’s relatively easier for a lab to steal food from the table than it is for a smaller dog. Individual dogs may also vary in terms of how food motivated they are.

The degree of food motivation has probably been selected for alongside trainability. When training a dog, it’s important to find a reward they really like, in order for them to be interested in learning and doing what you want them to do. A dog that’s difficult to reward, either because you can’t figure out what motivates them or because their ideal reward takes time (eg a game) will have a reputation for being harder to train or even ‘stupid’ than I dog that will do whatever pleases you so long as it gets food.
