Even though The Voice has proven to be a ratings giant over its seven-season run, their contestants have struggled to find post-show success in comparison to other singing competition shows. The X Factor (both US and UK) have spawned chart-topping stars like One Direction, Fifth Harmony and Little Mix while the original reality champs American Idol have given us Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Hudson and Carrie Underwood. But when it comes to The Voice, we can barely recall some of the winners, let alone tell you where Jermaine Paul is now. Sorry, Jermaine. But last season’s* runner-up Michelle Chamuel has what it takes to change things.
[snip]
Face the Fire is a cool melody that doesn’t knock you over the head with Chamuel’s voice (we already know how amazing she is from watching the show), instead it lures you in with an almost seductive quality as she repeats the refrain, “Pulling me closer.” The chorus itself is a simple and effective statement of going after one’s passion and, after a few listens, got stuck in our heads. It’s a subtle earworm, one that will grow with time and once you pay attention to the details, you’ll come to realize Chamuel’s recognizable style in the tiniest nooks of the track and become infatuated with it. In short, this can be Chamuel and The Voice’s breakout single.
* They’re a little off since it was actually three seasons ago, but we’ll forgive them because this is such a great write-up.
Many hardcore music aficionados might recognize her from her time fronting the seven-piece Michigan rock band, Ella Riot. After spending nearly a decade touring the United States, the band dissolved and Michelle reinvented herself as a solo artist and released tracks under the moniker: The Reverb Junkie.
Once, she felt rejuvenated…Michelle took a chance and auditioned for the fourth season of a certain NBC hit show called The Voice. After impressing megastars Adam Levine, Shakira and Usher with cover of “I Kissed A Girl,” she chose the “U Got It Bad” singer as her coach and her journey took her to the season finale, where she placed second!
Now, Michelle has released a new single and is hard at work making final preparations for the release of her latest solo full-length studio album, Face the Fire, which will debut early in 2015! She will also start a fall tour, which will have stops in Detroit, New York City, Philadelphia, Nashville and San Francisco.
For this edition of A Conversation, Michelle talked about her time on The Voice, her songwriting and the upcoming Turn It Up Tour.
The Turn It Up Tour kicks off tonight at The Shelter in Detroit, MI! You can still get your tickets for Detroit and other cities at shows.michellechamuel.com!
