* afternoon melancholy
open starter
classes had finished. thankfully for woosun. but his typical first year energy diminished quickly, smothered out by a lingering melancholy when he was left to his own thoughts. fingers curled on the lip of the benches that overlooked the baseball field as he was lost in thoughts. yunmi. the baby. gone. the sixteen year olds toes dug into the concrete, twisting with his hidden agitation at how there was still an unknown ache at the loss. it wasn’t as if they had known one another long, as he’d wanted the baby, as if there had been a chance that it would have ended well for him. but he still thought about it, still missed them. his hands wiped on the front of his slacks, fingers curled into the fabric and he holds his breath in an attempt to still his thoughts. three. two. one. and he exhales, trying to think of something lighter.
a fruitless endeavour as he looks down at his uniform, fingers beginning to twist and straighten out the disheveled state that he usually wandered around him. unfocused, struck in a daze that had only gotten worse since he returned to sunhwa after the break. no one else besides woojin knew of what had happened. there was no one around that he could talk to, express his unkempt ‘what if’s and longing to. they were only left to fester and eat at him until he was staring at his own hands, wondering what he was doing and where he should be going; a feeling that he had missed or forgotten something nagging at the back of his mind. legs slipped out until the hit the bench in front of him, his backpack tipping over with the force and contents spilling out. books, pencils, pens, pokemon cards, a water bottle, a baseball -- tumbling down the rows of raised benches. woosun cursing as he grips the front of his shin, rubbing at the pain and sighing at the mess of his belongings.

[ woojin sighs. woosun is more stubborn than he is, but he’s listening at least. baby steps in the right direction, but its progress none the less. his shoulders relax and pats woosun’s shoulder, before reaching around to brush dust off the boy’s thigh. he spends too much time sitting on the ground. ] “no matter what you do, you have my support okay?” [ he gives woosun a smile, before gentling tugging him to leave. ] “c’mon, its late. lets go back to the dorms.”
( ‘ / the pat to his shoulder has more effect on him than anything. a sign of his brothers affection, of their love, of how close they used to be. before everything went... wrong. it makes woosun’s eyes crinkle with a weak resolution of a smile, having his brother take care of him even briefly. it’s hard to stop them water up as he nods. ) “yeah, hyung.” ( ‘ / his meeker reply, throat tightened as he sees woojin smile at him and he grimaces a smile back; knowing it must have looking horrible and looking away. woosuns hand stretches, wraps around his older brothers as he nods. ) “yeah, hyung. i’m sorry if i disturbed you from something.” ( ‘/ he apologizes as he follows a step behind woojin. )
* friend of my sister
[ the bell rings, loud and shrill in her ears and she flinches, pencil twitching over the page and causing a stray line. her mouth curls downwards with distaste but she merely sighs and notes mentally to erase it when she gets back to her dorm. she has somewhere to be now. packing up her bag, she hurries out of the class, checking her phone to see if her afternoon was free. at the sound of her name she turns her head, surprised to find she didn’t have to look down to who she was speaking to. not often she finds someone the same height as her, but she knows this kid. her throat goes dry but she stops and waits for him to continue. ] “yeah, we were friends.” [ her response is a little curt, but not without reason. the last time she’d even made eye contact with woosun was in passing at the funeral - one she’d attended in a group with several classmates, because she wasn’t going to go alone and risk any questions about why she felt so attached to woohee. ]
( ‘ / there’s relief for woosun when he hears that he had found the right person. his eyes curving into crescents and his head canting to the left as he bites back the smile that threatened to rise up despite the curtness of the girls tone. he’d been looking for her, he was thankful to find her, he was persistent with the thought that this was a good idea. that this would make him feel better. his fingers wrung as he isn’t returned with a question that he expects and he swallows away his nerves. were. still stings at the edges. ) “i’m her dongsaeng. i..” ( ‘ / he doesn’t truly have it worked otu what he was going to ask for or what he should expected; but he had hopes. ) “i thought we could talk. i.. ( ‘ / a half uneasy laugh on his lips, muted by his head ducking forward and then exhaling to calm himself. ) “it probably sounds stupid. but i just wanted to talk to someone. who knew her. someone who isn’t my family. i’m sure she had things she would tell her friends but not her family. i just..” ( ‘ / he nervously rubs his neck and bites his lip. ) “i want to know her better.”
truly a visual straight out of a manga
and the powerhouse of the cell is...
[ ... ]
not waiting for woosun’s answer, eunha continues, “this is the cytoplasm. just think of it as ‘site of plasma,’ which kind of sounds like cytoplasm”
woosun’s eyes widen when she takes the pen and paper from him, almost expecting to be told that he’d done wrong and gotten the whole thing wrong. that was often and too regularly the case for the first year and he found himself sighing quietly as he studies what she adds to his diagram. for a brief glimpse of a second, he thinks she understands him and then ‘simple’ passes he lips and he gives up on that hope.
his hands slip down, tucked between his knees as he leans in on impulse when she comes closer to him and begins to explain the different pieces to him. cell wall is easy. membrane throws him off, teeth sinking into his bottom lip and he nods his head despite the uncertainty swelling in his stomach over being able to follow what she was explaining.
cytoplasm might as well be a foreign language to him. eye lashes fluttering, before he lifts a hand up, reaching for a pen quietly. movements slow and quiet as he tries not to bother eunha. cheeks burned with heat as he finds an empty corner, drawing out the diagram again. smaller than the first as if this would make his actions go unnoticed more. the cell wall, drawn and labelled. the cell membrane coming in second.
“cyt-o-plasm,” murmured under his breath as he lines and labels that one as well. finding it easier to comprehend and remember by giving himself an image, an action, a sound, a word together. scribbling underneath ‘site of plasma’. his brow furrows for a second. “so is that... like... inside all of it?” he asks, motioning to the empty space in the diagram.
WHAT’S YOUR DAMAGE?

i mean, really. how hard was it to get him his morning coffee– or pick up his dry cleaning or write out and organize his class notes? bae woosun should be grateful that jihoo was in a particularly giving mood this morning (he should be happy he hadn’t spilled the drink all over his last season’s new balances). he leans against his hand dramatically, fingers over his temples with a sigh.
“how do you expect to make it into cheong ryong?”
(really, shin jihoo was the least qualified person to tell anyone anything, and yet he’d spent his entire life bossing around a gaggle of staff and everyone around him. sucks for you, bae woosun).
@yfxwoosun
the words collide with woosun’s chest, full speed and knocking the air out of him. one eye cringed shut, shoulders tensed up and trying to stop himself being knocked over by the velocity of the older boys anger. his school blazer slipped down his arm, dragged by the weight of his backpack as the rush to get to jihoo on time had him running across the campus. sweat still clumped in his hair across his brow, and his breaths still uneven as he stands in the cross hairs of jihoo, wide eyes glancing from the older to the coffee.
his head urgent with nods even when he knows he shouldn’t answer. nodding, shaking, nodding again. yes, i can count. no, i’m not defective, i don’t think. yes, you did say six honeys and yes, it’s the same every week. woosun’s heart stutters when jihoo moves, as if expecting the future assault on his form would be worse than a few words. this was not the first time that he’d gotten the order wrong somehow. though he swears he didn’t internally.
the mention of cheong ryong mixed with aggravation that radiated off the second year made woosun swallow, lips twisting in an uneven smile as he sinks down to his knees on impulse. middle school bullying came with such demeaning positions and woosun slipped into habit when he was on edge and panicked. one hand curled on his wrist as he reaches for the coffee. “i’ll fix it! i’ll get another one! the right one! i promise!” he insists, pleads, yet doesn’t reach too far into the space.
anyone else might have gotten annoyed, told jihoo to find someone else, that they weren’t doing it anymore. but the first year only glanced at jihoo for a sign of what to do.
bae woosun was determined, persistent. he wanted into cheong ryong more than he wanted anything and the answers were in jihoo. if he got chosen to be an initiate, he must have known some secret way to make it happen. he would do anything.
“i’ll do anything! let me make it up to you, sunbae,” he implores, seeking direction on what he should do or how much more he should beg. a mans pride? woosun didn’t have the foundation to obtain one of those. not when he was used to being in the position he was.

@yfxsoohye
( ‘ / nervousness was not a common trait for woosun to show, his body leaned up against the hall way outside the third years classroom. it had taken a bit of running around and questioning until he found out where she had the class. soohye. he straightened up when the bell rang, when the doors began to open and the end of school was marked with excited chatter. his eyes darting over the features of everyone until they landed upon who he was looking for. ) “soo-- hye sunbae!” ( ‘ / his voice cracked in her name, fingers tugged on the sleeve of his backpack as he dashed forward to catch her arm. scared he might lose her in the crowd of people moving through the halls and bowing sharply in apology at his own actions. this time he cleared his throat before he spoke, looking at her. ) “i’m bae woosun. you.. you knew my sister, right?”
* so what is a puck?
[ ... ]
“Ready?” he asks and waits for Woosun to give him the okay before slowly starting to skate backward. He tries not to go too fast and not to pull too hard so that Woosun doesn’t lose balance and end up face-planting on the ice. As he skates, he keeps his eyes on the younger boy, watching the concentration on his face and the lack of color on his lips. Woosun never put on the sweater Hongbin had lent him and Hongbin wonders how the other boy has not been shivering to death yet considering how much he was shivering before they stepped on the ice. He decides that after they are done here, he will offer his dongsaeng to meet in the dorm kitchen for tea or some hot chocolate.
there was a nervous tremble in the back of his knees as he accepted both of hongbin’s hands. despite the current difficulties he was having, woosun was certain that he would be able to learn how to play hockey by the end of the day. his optimism at its highest as he squeezes hongbin’s hands gently and nodding in response to the explanation. the whole idea seemed easy enough to follow, though he was starting to accept that what looked and sounded easy, might not have been so. “okay! got it!” woosun smiles at the older boy, glancing down at the movement of the feet and if he had more confidence, he might have copied the motion. for now, he decided it would be best to simply stand with his feet evenly and not make any sudden movement that might lead him to taking not only himself, but hongbin down with him. “i’ll wait until i’m more stable,” he reaffirms the advice from hongbin, wanting to assure that he heard what he was supposed to do and when. eyes glinted with happiness as he smiled at the boy in front of him.
“ready,” woosun chirps out, adjusting the weight on his feet and trying to even out the skates under him as he began to move. there’s was a shy fear in his fingertips, pressing them firmer into hongbin’s hands in an attempt to steady out his balance. more than once he glanced down at his feet, hoping that they wouldn’t betray him and suddenly splay him across the ice in a puddle of pain. his brows knitted together in concentration as he found the courage to begin to move his skate forward, as had been explained to him. the first success rushed him with new confidence to lead the second, looking down and remembering hongbin’s comment to not stare at his feet. he jerked his head up, swallowed down the excitement that buzzed under his skin with each movement forward. “look-- i’m..” his skate stuttered, dug in and he stumbled a fraction forward into hongbin. his hand going to the older boys shoulder and clutching onto the front of his shirt. “fuck--” blurted out under his breath as his heart raced in his chest at the shock and he fumbled to get his skates back safely down on the ice. fingers still curled into the fabric, eyes wide as he realized he wasn’t falling further and body easing.
“sorry, i got excited,” woosun apologized, abashed, as he tried to ease the space back between them. there was nothing worse than clutching onto another boy for dear life and not actually being under any threat of death. “but i’m getting it. did you see!”

[ ... ]
”Alright, do you still feel up to continue?” he decides to ask first, just to check the boy’s motivation. Hongbin is personally getting a bit tired since he had training before this, but that’s another thing he is trying not to show. “There’s something else we can try if you still feel up for it,” he continues, “wait for me here, I’ll be right back.” He motions for Woosun to stay where he is before rapidly skating away and then stepping off the ice. He walks around the rink until he finds a chair. He picks it up and carries it back to the ice, stepping back on it and skating back over to Woosun, setting the chair down in front of him.
”So, we can try, or rather, you can try using this chair, mostly hold onto the back of it and push it across the ice as you try to skate, or you can hold on to my hands,” he says as he slowly waves them at the boy.
“i was told you were the best on the team! and you’re nice and you’re helping me a lot -- so you’re the best!” woosun once more tries to use the loudness of his voice, his exuberance to make the point when he fails to grasp something logical on the matter. a smile, brandishing his teeth as he nods his head and insists upon the fact that hongbin is the best teacher internally. “good teachers help their students a lot,” he adds, as if this would make his point of view more effective.
one minute everything was level, the conversation was easy and he was looking at hongbin -- the next pain was tearing up the inside of his legs and he was whimpering in pain. desperate to be saved from the hell, and unable to get his skates to grip on the slippery ice beneath him. his fingers cling into the fabric of hongbin’s clothing as he tries to pull himself up. the unsteadiness of another persons body exchanged for the firm railing that didn’t move or shake or shift under his touch. his breathing laboured, as if he had been ripped through the fastest rollercoaster he’d ever ridden. the curses swallowed down as he offered a strained smile towards hongbin. “i’m good. thanks, hyung.”
it’s difficult to hide the flutter of panic when hongbin says he has an idea and that involves him skating away from the wobbly kneed boy. woosun’ knuckles whiter as he clutches tighter onto the railing, unwilling to move once inch from where he is. no matter how much he wants to glance over his shoulder to look for the more experienced skater, he can’t bring himself to out of fear of slipping and breaking into two pieces.
his shoulders tense when hongbin returns, turning his head to see the chair and for a second, he thought he was being offered it to sit in. the explanation answers his confusion without needing to embarrass himself by sitting down on it. “oh.. ah..” woosun hesitates, not quite certain what was the more efficient method for learning. the chair seemed the more independent one since it involved physically less hand holding. but then he remembered clutching the railing and falling, and hongbin being closer to him seemed far more safe than the chair. that’s why he reaches out for one of hongbin’s hands. “the chair seems dangerous,” he confesses, abashed at how clingy he was being to the odler male -- but his legs still hurt from his feet defection to causing him pain.

[ woojin crosses his arms over his chest, unfazed. it should be worrying that the image of woosun, shaking and distressed, is no longer foreign to him. he has yet to figure out a way to deal with it that doesn’t involve strangling the poor boy and screaming, but woojin merely sighs, kicking up gravel idly. ] “fine.” [ the exasperation in his voice is obvious. ] “fine, fine, keep the baby. but you need to talk about this more with her, okay? don’t just decide these things by yourself.” [ taking a step forward, he offers his hand to his brother. there’s little woojin can do to change his mind, he sees that, but he’ll cushion the inevitable fall as best as he can. ]
( ‘ there’s the constant nagging sensation that he’d done something wrong and woojin’s exasperation with him only added to it. he shouldn’t have texted the older boy, shouldn’t have met him, shouldn’t have thought this would be understood. his eyes wavered as he averted his gaze. he wants to spit back that he nose it, but instead he bites back the words. ) “hyung..” ( ‘ / he trails off when he sees the hand extended towards him and then up at the older. there’s tangs of hesitation before he looks away and reaches out to take it. he pulls himself up easily. unable to meet the others gaze. ) “i’ll try my best to.”

“Nice one, Woosun!” Bin crows, taking the ball with one hand and putting out his other for a high five. “Leave vanguard to me, so watch my back! I’ll leave these punks in the dust.”
Ever confident, Bin takes a low stance that mirrors a crouch, moving his weight from foot to foot as he looks for an opening. When he sees a weakness in his opponent’s defense, he strikes and ducks out of the way when the enemy counterstrikes once one of their own has fallen. Grabbing another ball off the court, Bin repeats the process, unaware that he had a target on his back.
nothing could beat the rush of saving your best friend in a game to the death for the pride of your class. sweat glistened on woosun’s features, as he shot the other boy a wide smile over his shoulder and rocked back steps, watching the thrower of the ball walk off the ground with an irritated crinkle across his brow. the competitive side of woosun was delighted at the win and the rest of him hoped that he hadn’t thrown the ball too hard at them. it would be bad to hurt someone in a simple game of dodgeball.
bins extended hand and the praise wiped any concern from the first years features, bouncing on his heels as he returned the high five with a bit more strength than necessary. “got it!” he agreed without complaint. no matter what team sport it was, if woosun was told to play a position -- he would play that position. eyes crinkled into happy crescents as he stepped around the other boy to keep moving. “no one will touch you!”
as soon as bin started to move, woosun takes his place a few steps behind. stepping out of the wall of a slow incoming ball and pausing seconds short of another. clearly there was a revenge plot for getting out the other teams member. a laugh bubbled up on his lips as he sees bin strike someone out and that diverts attention to him instead.
it’s when he sees the ball being aimed towards bin that he steps forward, once more on instinct. the ball slamming into his chest roughly, and he almost fumbles with it. the breath knocking his laugh as he glances over at bin, seeing that he was safe. “saved your butt again, bin-ah!” woosun cheerfully informs his best friend and pretends to aim the ball at the person who had targeted bin, only to change direction and aim for someone else. he missed them, but he still grinned seeing them stumble to avoid it.

when she hears the voice jakyung almost jumps, looking at the bright boy in front of her. his whole behavior and the happiness in his voice make him look like straight out of a shoujo manga, and jakyung doesn’t know if she likes that. she can see he is younger than her, his baby face leaves no doubts. “yeah, i go to sunhwa.” she asks, turning around to look better at him. if her experience is right there is only one reason why a boy would come to talk to her and she is not interested, especially not in a boy who looks like he is 13 despite his height. “choi jakyung, not interested.” she waves her hand on a vague gesture. as if this party could get worse.
at the confirmation that she went to sunhwa, woosun’s defenses crumpled down to an instinctive familiarity. as if with one connection, he could now feel at ease in her company and that she would feel the same with him. it was naive -- he assumed, in the seconds after when she seemed to take him in with a keen eyes and then dismiss him with a wave of her hand. his heart jutted up into his throat as he found himself unable to do much but stare at her in a blind sense of loss. he didn’t know where to take the conversation when she had dismissed him. mind whirled to run over what she said again.
‘choi jakyung. not interested.’
“oh -- i’m not trying to flirt with you,” woosun quickly spurts out, head ducking down as he fiddled with the non-alcoholic drink in his hand and glanced around the party. too many people older than him, too many people who were smarter than him, too many people that he would only be able to stare at and feel inept next to. another student was a sanctuary. “i just... didn’t want to stand alone any more,” he mumbles the confession, abashed and glancing past his brows towards her, wondering if she believed him or not. it was the truth!
“i saw someone from sunhwa and i thought i was saved,” he continues, an awkward laugh as he dares to raise his head and rub the back of his neck. this was a silly plan. she was an older student and he’d found being a first year made him a bug in their eyesight more than someone they wanted to hang with. being the youngest brother meant he knew older kid didn’t enjoy babysitting him that much to begin with. “i didn’t mean to give you the wrong impression.” this time he smiles, hoping to erase the mistake in his judgment.
