Conclusion post
Trendspotting in digital media is the most inspiring and impressive course I chose in graduate life. The professors always brought us cutting-edge technologies and latest media trend. But what’s more important is that he taught me tools and methods to evaluate trends and enlightened me to consider future media from some perspectives I never thought before. I love the atmosphere that classmates could share new information and thoughts freely, which echoes brainstorming and crowdsourcing, which mentioned in Futuring and The Second Machine Age, as important methods to make breakthrough in any field. The guest speakers from diversified sector of media fields really opened an window for me to learn current digital media situation.
No matter six Supertrends or DEGEST (acronym referring to six broad categories: Demography, Economy, Government, Environment, Society/ culture, and Technology) helps me to form a “paradigm” to notice the latest trends and to forecast their impact and future development. Also, I am provoked to think relationships between single trends and see them in big picture.
The assignments systematically tie my knowledge background and my attempts of exploring digital media field with what I have learned from class and readings. For instance, as my major is media studies my focus used to be media and culture as well as people’s perception of media. So as for Tumblr, I started from this point of view and explored how AI influenced society especially culture section. I found when AI combined social media, its impacts became greater. So I slightly shift my focus to social media’s function when using high technology such as big data and AI. Enlightened by class and reading, I took some wild card events, such as world war, and into considerate, analyzing how governmental policies and economic situation effect development of digital media. By exploring these fields, I not only have a clear focus for my academic research, but also prepare for my startup in digital media.
