still have not been able to substantially write (though i am plucking away at drafts very very slowly) but i have been continuing my playthrough of ac: unity and if i do, in fact, add arno back to my muse list, first order of business is making sure everyone knows he's a cat person

i've been replaying a couple of assassin's creed games (finished black flag ahead of the remake this summer—i'm very excited) and my love for arno dorian is resurfacing...

the only thing more annoying than a good answer? two good answer, one after the other, right in a smug little row. ─── in this case however the annoyance brought with it an edge of affection ; the other party clearly not trying to come off as smug, he just so happened to have smug taste and give smug answers. in fact, had rogue been in a better mood, the sights and sounds of a roaming caravan of people not so fresh in her mind, it may simply have come off as confidence or even, funnily enough, a simple answer to the question which she had asked in the first place .

affectionate-annoyance aside, with chin still in her palm rogue couldn't keep herself from truly listening to what the other had to say. interested not only in what was being said, but in the way it was being said as well. it was, she'd always thought, the best part about talking to strangers ; no need to fake disinterest for the sake of keeping up the appearance of apathy, and she hoped that the feeling of being able to let go was mutual-- that what was being said, felt, and expressed was just as genuine in that special way that one could only risk when in the presence of a person they may never see again.

" for the first ( and last ) time in her life rogue found herself wishing to be illiterate, if only because watching him apologize for making her bring it up a second time would be well worth the struggle. " can we meet in the middle? i'll begrudgingly admit that i know how to read, but then you have to believe that i don't have a favorite to share. " a half smile, one corner of berry lips lifting in amusement. " guess i've never vibed with anyone like you do with your boy dantès. pretty sad for me, right ? it's no way to live. "

First impressions were key. They shape behavior and opinion and professional connections ; they could be the first steps toward building reputation ( which is worth its weight in gold these days ) . Even those who claim not to care much for that sort of thing would be telling a bold-faced lie ( himself included ) . He never felt the need ( nor desired ) to perform for others, be anything other than who he was. But he would still attempt to put the right foot forward for those first steps, rather than burn bridges before he's ever crossed them.

Gauging if the right impression was made, however, proved to be even harder than perfecting the impression itself. From her initial reaction to his answer now to him seemingly holding her attention with his elaboration, he'll admit he doesn't feel he could get a clear read. ( She strikes him as someone who enjoys staying ahead of the game, not giving every answer right away. ) If nothing else, maybe it means something that this is one of the most ... friendly, say, conversations he's had in his limited time here ( outside of professional niceties ) . A low bar, especially for one so focused on his work, but appreciated nonetheless.

His chin dips slightly and his eyes look down toward the bartop as she playfully scolds ; a small, sheepish half-smile pulls at this lips. John silently rules her answer fair, and muses, lightly, ❝ There are worse ways. ❞ A gentle relinquishment of the subject to the air and he takes another modest drink from his glass.

With a breath, he coolly changes the subject : ❝ How long have you been back in the city? ❞ The sound of small talk, and yet ... casually prying. ( Though perhaps an unfair trade with ' what's your favorite book? ' ) And the question is unintentionally said as if he shares the very familiarity with this city that most in the room would, including her ; as if he wasn't a glorified tourist. ( Still learning the street names, the districts, the people, and knowing there was no point in truly pretending otherwise. )
