[ENG] Fragments of the Labyrinth — The map, in the world now

A screen never shows you the gold.

The way it catches the light differently at every angle.

For months you watched this map take shape on a screen.

Now it exists in the room. Pressed into paper, edged in gold,

stamped, numbered, held.

The seal in red, cut by hand in lino.

The emblem blind-embossed into the paper, felt more than seen.

These are the things a screen never shows you.

Mercator never drew maps to keep them.

He drew them so others could cross. This one was made

to leave the studio, to hang on a wall that isn't mine,

to be looked at slowly by someone who needed a way through.

Two formats, one edition, closed for good once the window ends.

Each copy finished by hand.

Un écran ne vous montre jamais l'or.

La façon dont il accroche la lumière différemment selon l'angle.

Pendant des mois, vous avez vu cette carte naître sur un écran.

Maintenant elle existe dans la pièce. Pressée dans le papier,

bordée d'or, tamponnée, numérotée, tenue en main.

Le sceau rouge, taillé à la main en linogravure.

L'emblème gaufré à sec dans le papier, senti plus que vu.

Ce sont des choses qu'un écran ne montre jamais.

Mercator n'a jamais dessiné de cartes pour les garder.

Il les dessinait pour que d'autres puissent traverser. Celle-ci est

faite pour quitter l'atelier, pour être accrochée à un mur qui n'est

pas le mien, regardée longtemps par quelqu'un qui avait besoin d'un passage.

Deux formats, une seule série, fermée définitivement à la fin de la fenêtre.

Chaque exemplaire fini à la main.

For months you watched this map take shape.

It's finished. And for the first time, it can leave my hands.

Mercator never drew maps to keep them.

He drew them so others could cross. So the paths the Tower

hides could be found by anyone who needed them.

A map, for him, is how you resist: you give people a way through.

This one is drawn in that spirit. Made to move, not to be sealed.

Printed by a French fine-art house on Arches paper,

the finest there is. Gold border in hot-foil.

Then finished by hand: blind embossing, stamped signature, numbering.

Two formats:

Small, 46 × 65 cm.

Large, 65 × 92 cm.

The edition is limited to the orders placed during pre-order,

then closed for good.

Celle-ci est dessinée dans cet esprit. Faite pour circuler, pas pour être scellée.

Imprimée par une maison française d'art sur papier Arches,

le meilleur qui soit. Cadre doré au pelliculage à chaud.

Puis finie à la main : gaufrage à sec, signature au tampon, numérotation.

Deux formats :

Petit, 46 × 65 cm.

Grand, 65 × 92 cm.

[ENG] A map kept by one hand is a leash.

So I won't keep this one.

One year of work. One map of a world that won't hold still.

They call the Tower the centre.

I found no centre. Only a lie useful enough to draw.

I made this at the foot of the Tower, with my back to it.

The Tower seals its map and calls it the truth.

Mine is meant to move. Copied, carried, hidden,

passed to whoever needs to cross.

Every hand that holds it is one the Tower can't count.

Soon, a few of these maps will leave my hands.

Each one finished by hand. Each one a crossing.

When that day comes, you'll know.

Watch this space. Or the newsletter, if the algorithm forgets me.

The paths move. If you follow it and it fails you,

it lies no more than I do.

The light climbed as far as it could, then stopped.

Everything held its breath at once.

The map. The year. Me.

The map is finished.

I've been looking at it for an hour.

Un an à regarder cette carte refuser de rester immobile.

Cette nuit, elle tient.

C'est arrivé le jour le plus long.

La lumière est montée aussi haut qu'elle pouvait, puis s'est arrêtée.

Tout a retenu son souffle en même temps.

[ENG] I don't always know where a fragment comes from.

This one has no coordinates. No era.

Three figures with scythes. A wreck. Gold running

through the dark like something that refused to disappear.

I kept it because it holds together in a way I can't explain.

Everything seems to be falling, and nothing falls.

That's the only kind of balance I trust.

Je l'ai gardé parce qu'il tient ensemble d'une façon que je ne saurais pas expliquer.

[ENG] Before the Labyrinth, I already painted thresholds that smiled before they closed.

The Morrigan.

She invites. White birds. Purple silk that pools like blood.

You walk toward the goddess, past the flowers.

Later, you notice the red at your feet.

The Labyrinth shows you a door that looks exactly like the one you dreamed.

A test disguised as an exit.

[ENG] Before the Labyrinth, there was the hunt.

Diane — 2013.

Mixed media on Arches paper: graphite, gold leaf (24k), oxidised silver leaf, hydrangea petals. The doe in the frame is in relief.

Even then, I kept returning to the same question:

what it means that the chase never ends.

Diane and the doe aren't predator and prey.

They're two figures locked in the same archetype, circling each other in a time that doesn't move.

A painting can do that.

Hold the chase forever at the perfect point of tension.

Myth works the same way. Suspended. Outside of consequence.

The Labyrinth doesn't.

Nothing holds its shape in there.

The map I drew yesterday doesn't match the one I find today.

The chase continues. The ground shifts beneath it.

Some things don't resolve.

They just move differently.

Même à cette époque, je revenais à la même question :

ce que ça signifie que la chasse ne finisse jamais.

Diane et la biche ne sont pas prédateur et proie.

Ce sont deux figures enfermées dans le même archétype,

qui se tournent autour dans un temps qui n'avance pas.

Un tableau peut faire ça.

Figer la traque au point d'équilibre parfait, pour toujours.

Le mythe fonctionne pareil. Suspendu. Hors de toute conséquence.

Le Labyrinthe, non.

Là-dedans, rien ne tient sa forme.

La carte que j'ai tracée hier ne correspond plus à celle que je trouve aujourd'hui.

La traque continue. Le sol bouge sous elle.

Certaines choses ne se résolvent pas.

Elles bougent, simplement.

I was already drawn to the same threshold:

the moment when a face stops being a person

and becomes a passage.

Something slips away.

Something crosses.

The masks loosen.

The horse returns to dust.

The moth moves toward something unseen.

Looking at this piece now,

I feel like the Labyrinth had already begun somewhere beneath the surface.

En regardant cette pièce aujourd’hui,

j’ai l’impression que le Labyrinthe avait déjà commencé quelque part sous la surface.
