For those of you who think being spanked is sexual abuse or child abuse need to go and look up the definition. Also you should take the time to look into the book and what it’s actually about before you go and spread wrong info. But because I’m nice I’ll break it down for you.
Zeze is a 5 year old boy from a poor family. In the book he is depicted as a mischievous little boy who likes to play pranks on others. When he’s in school or around others that isn’t his family, Zeze is an angel. Because Zeze is always pulling pranks at home his father spanks him as punishment (where I grew up this is normal and by no means abuse). NO WHERE in the book does it say Zeze’s father rapes him or sexually abused him. Zeze’s father looses his job and it forces the family to move again, this time to a house with an orange tree. Zeze becomes friends with the orange tree and it becomes his escape from the reality that he lives in. The tree literally says things like “climb up me”, “touch me” “I long for your touch” “come see me again” “ I call your name” etc. Zeze eventually ends up moving towards the end of the book and the tree expresses it’s sadness saying it “longs for Zeze’s touch once more”. This book is not a “real life story”. This book is about a boys imagination, an orange tree and the struggles of growing up poor. This book is taught in classes and read to children, if it was about sexually assaulting a child or any such topic do you think schools would be letting little kids read it? The answer is no.
Secondly the picture of Zeze under the tree, to me, is not in a “pin-up pose”. The child is not pant-less in anyway. He looks happy to be under the tree and to me would be okay to have in a children’s book. If you look at where the knee bends and the argyle socks (or fishnets for you haters) meet, you can see a right angle. Those my friends would be the shorts the kid is wearing. Then the whole thing with her calling Zeze “sexy”. She wasn’t calling him sexy or the idea of him sexy. She was saying ,to her, being both a demon and an angel is sexy. Why don’t you read the whole tv segment on the interview and not what they edited out?
All of you hating for no real reason other than you are hopping on the witch-hunt need to understand IU’s struggles. Those lyrics in no way are sexual and neither is how she’s singing it. IU at the age of 15 was already being sexualized for her child like/innocent appearance by her adult male audience. (for those of you who read fanfics about your male idols can stop being a hypocrite on the subject, we all know half of them are considered underage yet you still talk about getting grabby). And when she tried to do a “sexy” concept she got called some pretty bad names. Can she not be both sexy and innocent? The song clearly is her calling out her fans who sexualized her. The whole album is on that subject if you listen to it well. But once a female in her 20’s calls out the actions of her perverted fans, she’s immediately crucified and told to take it down. Good job
