Thoughts on Broken Age Act 2

I’ll try to be as vague as possible but probably best not to read if you don’t want to be spoiled, just in case.

So I finished the game in about six hours. It was definitely longer than Act 1, which was both good and bad. While I enjoyed playing it for the most part, it didn’t really live up to my expectations. 

I’m going to get the negatives out of the way first:

In Act 1, it really felt like the developers put most of their focus on telling the story and developing these charming characters. The puzzles were sort of secondary and relatively simple. In Act 2, I felt like they went in the complete opposite direction. The puzzles are now more complicated and oftentimes overly frustrating (there’s a puzzle involving a knot that isn’t even really a puzzle. It’s a vague game of chance, at best.) while the story sort of falls short. Any suspense built up from the first act is gone after a few short puzzle solves. Most questions from the first act are answered within the first hour or two of gameplay and the answers are pretty underwhelming for the most part. (And some aren’t ever answered. At all.) There were one or two surprises I didn’t really expect, but they weren’t quite enough to make up for everything else in the story being sort of lukewarm and predictable. The awkward, often slow pacing and frustrating puzzles made the game much less fun/interesting for me than the first part. BUT...

The positive stuff:

The art is still very, very good, and the characters are still very charming. I even enjoyed the ending because I did get invested in Vella and Shay and all the other characters I’d met along the way. The dialogue is still witty and the voice acting is still great. The story itself is very sweet, if much more simplistic than I originally thought it would be. But simplicity isn’t always a bad thing. 

I suppose most of my story related negatives came from the fact that I expected something more complex after the cliffhanger in Act 1. And that’s partly my fault. As a whole, Broken Age was a somewhat decent point and click with fantastic characters and an okay story.

 I certainly didn’t hate it, but I can’t say I'd recommend it either. :/

I just created a character for the last class I’m “missing” alliance-side. (warlock) She’s also my only worgen. I’ve never been a huge fan of the race but the starting area is super pretty. Hopefully she’ll end up max-level one day!
