Hi. I'm a girl who grew up in a very homophobic family, but I've always known I've never been quite straight. I've recently accepted myself as bisexual, and I've been dating a girl for almost a month now. Before dating her, I was only... 30% attracted to girls? Then I felt like maybe I was just gay. Girls felt more right to me than boys... now I honestly don't know. I don't really tell a difference... I'm not sure if "pansexual" fits me. Would you be able to answer that? Thank you!

idk dude im not you and im not pansexual, but if youve felt attraction to more than one gender then you might be pan or bi i think??? you dont have to have a label and you dont always need to figure this stuff out right away!!! experiment with different labels and see which one feels right. sorry about your family!!! hopefully you will soon be in a better environment

Legal documents in the United States only recognize “male” and “female” as genders, leaving anyone who does not identify as one of these two genders with no option. Australia and New Zealand both allow an X in place of an M or an F on passports for this purpose, and the UK recognizes ‘Mx’ (pronounced “Mix”) as a gender-neutral title.

This petition asks the Obama administration to legally recognize genders outside of the male-female binary, and provide an option for these genders on all legal documents and records.

The Toronto District School Board this week released guidelines to help schools better accomodate transgender and gender-non-conforming students, including advice on bathrooms and pronouns. 

As this National Post article points out, the guidelines have their critics, but others say the rules are long overdue and will help to ensure a safer school environment for trans* students.

On the issue of washrooms, the guidelines note that all students have the right to use a bathroom that “best corresponds to the student’s gender identity, regardless of the student’s sex assigned at birth.” Requiring a student to “prove” their gender through a doctor’s letter or identity documents is unacceptable, the board says.

Further, “students who wish to use pronouns other than the masculine or the feminine (such as ‘zhe’ and ‘hir’) need to be accommodated equally,” the guidelines note.

About time. Maybe some schools in the U.S. can look to this as a model.

Er.

After bitching on twitter yesterday about how hard it is to find a decent source of trans news, like news about trans happenings, I decided to start my own twitter account to provide links to trans news, that was read by actual humans. 

It’ll hopefully be a curated stream of links. I (of course) also decided to do a tumblr to host the links as well. 

The twitter account will be run by me and two trans women, all adding links to trans news that we’ve read. So far, the tumblr is just me and will have the twitter links piped into it.

The Problem of Socializatiom

As a trans woman, one of the most common excuses I hear for the exclusion of trans women from feminist spaces is that we somehow retain our “male privilege” or that we were “socialized” as boys, and thus have no place in feminism because we didn’t have the right childhood experience to be allowed to contribute to feminist discussions.

The number one problem with this argument is that it assumes a universal transgender experience. From my own experience, there is no universal transgender narrative. Some women I know transitioned very late in life and have decades of experience of what being perceived as male is like, and others transitioned so early in life that they never knew what it was like to be treated like a man.

When people make the argument that trans women aren’t as authentic as cis women, it erases a lot of trans women’s experience by assuming that all trans experiences fall under a single easily definable narrative.

This argument ALSO assumes that all cis women had a universal upbringing and subsequently erases the experience of women who aren’t white first-worlders. By stating that this white middle-class first-world experience is the only way to be a woman, TERFs exclude the experiences of other cis women.

When people say that because we’ve experienced this nebulous nonspecific “male socialization” their argument boils down to this idea that all trans women have this inherent maleness that cannot be washed off or escaped from. In essence, we are not authentic women, and because we weren’t born women and seen as female from day one, our gender is not as legitimate as a cis woman’s gender, and that as trans women we can never truly be women, because a trans identity is inherently inferior to a cis identity.

But when pressed to define what specifics constitute this “male socialization,” there is never a clear answer beyond being seen as male. This of course, ignores the fact that every culture defines masculinity in a different way, thus ignoring these cultural differences in favor of this narrative about a “universal malehood.”

There is no universal concept of this nebulous “male socialization,” and to assert that it exists as a way to segregate trans women as being inauthentic and somehow undeserving of the right to call ourselves women, and quite frankly, I don’t buy that.

The District of Columbia Office of Human Rights (OHR) has launched a groundbreaking Transgender and Gender Identity Respect Campaign that advocates are calling the first government-funded campaign focused exclusively on the betterment of transgender and gender non-conforming people.

The five campaign ads feature actual community members, and will appear citywide on bus shelters in the fall and winter of 2012.

D.C. residents and visitors who see an ad are encouraged to photograph it and post to social media using the hashtag #TransRespect, in hopes the campaign’s mission expands beyond D.C.

Transgender people, the majority of whom have never had problems voting in the past, may now lose their right to vote due to dozens of new voter suppression laws. Over 25,000 transgender people could have their voting rights taken away. In response to these dubious new laws, we have released two resources to help transgender people reclaim their voting rights.

so there’s a chance i may be getting kicked out tomorrow. a fairly slim chance but enough of a chance to make me worry and want to put out feelers for advice or help.

i live in lincoln, nebraska. as far as i know/can remember, there are no shelters/places i can actually STAY here. there is no queer center at all as far as i know, let alone one that takes in homeless queer folk. there is a mission here but only families can actually stay there, and only by paying, so that’s out. i don’t have a car. i do have a job, but not within walking distance from my current place, but i think i could use the bus system if i found a place closer by to stay. no money, not even a single cent, because i literally just got this job and don’t get paid for at least a week and without transport idk if i’ll be able to even hold onto it.

idk what to do.

I'm feeling super confused. Lately I've been feeling like I'm not totally comfortable in my own skin. I've been feeling the urge for a binder and I find myself looking up STP packers(I'm female) and, even more odd, I've been getting very otherkin-esque urges and a bunch of other really confusing things?I've never felt any otherkin feelings before, I've never identified that way, and I still feel like that's not really a label I fit under but... do you think it's possible these feelings are(cont)

It's just so unsettling to identify so closely with deer after being so NOT an otherkin for such a long time, you know?And now I'm left with questions about kinda' identifying with them but not really being sure if I /really/ identify with them and whether it's possible to really be otherkinwhen I never feel dysphoria. I'm confused and I really hope these feelings are aphase because I know my parents wouldn't get it

well ultimately only you will know if it's a phase or not, anon! whether your gender and species feelings turn out to be a phase or a permanent Thing in your life, it's ok. experimenting and trying out labels and identities is great even if they don't work out in the end! i know other nonhumans who do not feel species dysphoria so that's fine too!!! ultimately it's whatever you feel comfortable with, and i hope your home situation won't hold you back from exploring and feeling comfortable with yourself and your identity.
