Absolutely loved this book by my dear friend Kyle Paoletta. I’ll admit it— as a New Englander, I wasn’t sure what I’d be able to take away from this book about the American Southwest, a region of the country I had only visited once over a decade ago. Boy, was I humbled by that assumption!

American Oasis carves a fascinating path through the Southwest, weaving together the history of Native communities, colonialism, environmentalism, architecture, and immigration completely seamlessly. I’m really impressed at how much ground was covered, so thoroughly, and yet in a way that was enjoyable and easily-read. It took me a while to get through this book— not because it was overly dense or prosaic— but because I kept picking up my phone to look things up, to delve deeper into some of the people, places, and landmarks he writes about.
