You'll Street!
PARTICIPATIVE MAP - Community urban reports
Dear STREET MAKERS, Here you have a MAPS APP willing to show the opportunities of the SIA. This should make visible all the spaces were a improvement or change could be done, or we think so.
PARTICIPATIVE MAP LINK
It's completely open, that means that YOU CAN ADD THE PLACES WHERE YOUWOULD WISH SOMETHING TO HAPPEN, or just report something you don't like, or like!!. That follows the philosophy of "You'll street" where everyone has a voice that has to be listened. When adding a point, you can write its name and a description. The name fits the following categories: - UNUSED BUILDINGS - PUBLIC SPACE - BICYCLE NETWORK - RENOVATED ACTIVITY HUBS - TRAFFIC INFRASTRUCTURE ... and you could use some more as name tags (categories), for example: - NOISE - COMMUNITY GARDENS - STREET PLANTS
- REFERENCES that you like and have seen in other city or part of Sydney, and you would like to happen in the SIA - ... whatever you consider interesting. In description, write what do you want on that place: just report an abandoned place, a wish of improvement, an activity proposal... The aim of this is making a participative platform where every of us can tell what we think about our urban environment. Perhaps you think you are alone in your beliefs, and then discover that much other people feels the same as you about the same place! This map has been created initially for the SIA of Sydney, but activity/improvement reports beyond this, and even overseas, are welcome! Let's make this the beginning of something great! Cause #2: abandoned = opportunity
If you walk through Alexandria, you will notice that there are not few abandoned factories, shops or open spaces. These represent its history, when they where rich and succesful once upon a time...
Burrows Rd
But far from being the image of decadence, these spaces can turn into lively places where people can develop activities that they couldn't before. See what happened here (local examples of urban renovation):

What do you feel about these abandoned spaces? What would you do in them?

Cause #1: Alexandria Canal

How many of you know about Alexandria Canal? Have you ever seen it? If you do, you're lucky!! Because it's hidden behind industries and warehouses, and hardly accessible. Look to the current image of the Canal:

The Southern Industrial Area (SIA) is located at the south of Sydney LGA, just in a central position respect Sydney CBD, the airport, the port, the main university campus (NSW, SU, UTS) and hospitals. It is also adjacent to the recently developed Green Square district. The main land use right now is industrial, with some commercial and bulky goods retailing. But the forecasts are that many of those are moving to other suburbs, thus the area will increase its residential use. The population density is the lower in Sydney LGA, so predictably this area will be the target of future residential developments and gentrification.
In contrast to its neighbour district, the Green Square, this still hasn't got a big population to stablish its own character and community, but small activity hubs are popping up to change this. There is a big potential for interesting uses though, such as the reconversion of the Alexandria Canal into a green walk path.
So... would you like to participate in this evolution? How would you like this area to be? Join us if you want your voice to be listened!
