DJP#11

The short story by Raymond Carver”what we talk about when we are talking about love” is a very minimalist story . The plot is short and sweet with out many complication. This leaves the reader to really think about what the tittle means. It lets the reader understand what each character feels with out having the author to spell it out.

In the story there is a group of friends that talks about relationships and the types of loves that come with each one. One thing that the author lets the reader know is the fact that they were drinking. This is important since the more drunk people get, it seems that they get more talkative and really lets a person know what they are thinking. A lot of the times there are characters that are shutout and they say one thing and not the other. The author did not have to reassure there honesty but simply stated it. The whole time the friends were talking there is a clear indication of stories and they all turn into some sort of trial. The main couple talk about the trails they had to go to like and abusive relationship she was in, a divorce he had to go through. They author adds a story about an old couple that got into a car accident. A reader can pick up on the themes of these relations ships and the tittle. This led to the conclusion that when we talk about love we talk about trials. Since this is minimalist all of this are guesses and while the reader may not fully know what the author meant. It is ok because that is not the point of the genre but really is so that reader gets all that they can out of it.

DJP # 10

Homecoming, a novel by Yaa Gyasi, relates the story of a couple of generations. Her stories emphasize many time periods and focus on certain social issues. The idea of getting to know history though trails of the people living in that certain time period is interesting. One character that should had have more emphasize was the story of H’s mother.

The author had a lineage that she talked about, while Anna was not part of that lineage her story is uncleared. In the book homecoming, she is portrayed as a loved, family orientated and most importantly free women. Her right was to be free. However she disappeared one day and the only witness was a kid. The story told was that a man gave her a ride since she was pregnant and it was night but once getting in, no one knew her where about. Since this author has a tendency to pull her imagination from events that actually happened. How many women’s were taken like that? Leaving their family behind because they accepted a kind gesture from a stranger. Her kid H was raised in a farm and was a share cropper. There is not much in between.

DJP #9 the story of a man

Homecoming, a novel by Yaa Gyasi, there is a story about H. H story is consistent with the concept of Bildungsroman. The story about H is about a troubled man and through a series of events he slowly changed. He became a mature adult with a huge impact in the community he chose.

At the begging of his story H is arrogant, young and invincible . He lost the girl he wanted and he was jail. There he was leased to the mines. In the mines, H learned what mortality was. He spent most of his life serving a sentence because of his arrogance. He no longer was the same person, but rather he became wise. The people that surrounded him, no matter the color, had his back, because if not they could all die or be whipped. The things he resisted, like the union, became a part of him since the people looked up to him when ever they were facing a decision. Finally he accepted his fate with the person he loved. The girl he let go because of his ego came back to him. All of this is congruent with a BIldugsroman diagram. In this diagram the main character would go through trials to make them realize their faults and make them mature. Something similar to what happened to H.

Djp#7 perception

In the story “tlön,uqbar,orbis tertius” by Jorge Luis Borges there is a sense of realism. This means it uses metaphors to create a mirror to this world. It uses metaphors of perception in a world that is not in this planet. The way this world thinks about language, time and it’s application is described differently but in a way it takes us back to the world we live in.

Language in this world has many parts to it such as nouns, verbs and adjetives. However in the world of Tlön things are a little different. There are no nouns and instead “ the noun is formed by an accumulation of adjective “(borges ,9) a noun is still a noun as we think of it but they use different words to describe such a noun. In the book they use the example of a moon( borges,8). There is no word for moon but through a few more words the concept of a moon is conveyed. Apart from negating nouns or anything that might lead to classification, they also negate time. “ it reasons that the present is indefinite, that the future has no reality other than present hope , that the past has no reality other than a present memory “ ( Borges, 10) there is no past and no future in this book. In this world there is no present past or future but we speak of it and that world doesn’t. Like words, time is just a concept that they treat differently. In conclusion, a singular concept is portrayed in both world just explained differently.

Dj# 6

In the story book of "dammed if I do" by Percival Everett there are many clear signs of satire. The character of the book Daniel uses satire to overpower those that wish to belittle him. The first example of such falls on the first paragraphs of the story " some white boys from a fraternity yelled forward to the stage at the black man holding the acoustic guitar and began to shout, 'Play Dixie' for us ! Play 'Dixie ' for us !" ( Everett , 91 ) now to pin point exactly to where the satire might fall the author used certain word to describe the heritage of the boys and the heritage of the musicians. Now, a clear indication of where this is going might be the song but for those with out background the author explains the feeling that such question caused the room " He looked from them to the uncomfortable expressions on the faces of the old guys with whom he was playing with " ( Everett , 92 ) The author takes note that the room started feeling uncomfortable, something society might not be ok with. the fact that these frat boys ask the musician such of thing sounds like a scandal. He also puts us in the musicians head where he expresses " He used the slide squeeze out the melody of the song he grew up hating. The song the whites had always pulled out the remind themselves just where they were " (Everett, 92) the author has establish the feeling of the room, the musicians and the frat boys. The song is meant to be derogatory toward the musician. However the last paragraph only gave the background to the song. What Daniel does next is where the satire lay. " Daniel sang yet ,feeling the lyrics , deciding that the lyrics were his, deciding that the song were his "( Everett , 92) the song was already established that it should be derogatory to the musician and yet he claimed it. He took something that was not made for him according to society , to the feeling of the man and women in that room . The author also explains why by quoting the song "Old times there are not forgotten " (Everett, 92 ) since in that case the history has not been forgotten. The suffering of the musician and his heritage is not forgotten. The other line of the song that is quoted is "look away , look away ,look away ,Dixieland ." Daniel truthful did believe this words that the song meant. The looking away could meant looking away from that past. Now in this case he turn something derogatory and truthful made it to fit him and his meaning. Like any other satire it provoke a sensation to the public. "He sang the song and listen to the silence around him " (Everett , 92) while he was appropriating something that was not made for him there is shock. The reaction of the bar is priceless."One person clapped. Then another. And soon the tavern was filled with applause and hoots.He found the frat boys in the back and watched as they stormed out , a couple of people near the door chuckling at them as they passed. " then the public understood the satire of Daniel, they understood what the song man to him. Of course the ones that wanted to belittle him didn't get there way and left angry. This is a clear example of satire .

DJP # 2 story time

On one luminous day, a baby girl was born in Chihuahua, Mexico. Her name was Viridiana Ivonee Gonzalez Hermosillo. She is the fourth of five kids but only grew up with three of her siblings. When she was five years old, her older sister moved to the United States to get a better education. In Mexico, things were going well, but as time went on, the quality of life in Mexico declined. In a hurried decision to keep her family safe and together, Viridiana’s mother allocated her, her two sisters, and her brother to Memphis, Tennessee to reunite with her sister.

After one year, she was able to communicate with other people in this foreign country.  She always found comfort in mathematics (which she is passionate about to this very day) and the challenge of reading another language kept her going. Through reading English, she learned to push herself to understand other people and their ideas. Although mathematics is an easy concept, all she had had to do was keep up with the numbers and concepts, no matter the language that is spoken in the country. At the end, she learned to love people because they kept her sane through this rough transition.

Of course, a person is no more than two things. Throughout the course of 18 years, this particular lady picked up many things along the way, such as the English language. There are many things like dancing (which she loves to do more than anything), social life, the culture she left behind but has never forgotten, and also her religion that made her realize her standards and who she really is. While math and reading kept her together, a million things completed her.
