Cinder raised a single brow, detecting it, but said nothing. She vaguely remembered being in a similar situation the first time she had the power to properly feed herself. When you were used to eating everything you could in a go, you didn’t think about eating too much.
She’d leave antacids outside the guest room once Emerald was settled in.
It was a legitimate question, Cinder supposed as she walked with Emerald. Vaguely becoming aware of what the girl’s power might have been. No, she couldn’t say for sure. But between what she’d seen so far-and how Emerald’s presence felt at different times…
For all the fortune, the vehicle was simple enough, if sleek and clean. A dark red sedan with four doors, like others out there.
“Passenger seat or back row?” Cinder inquired as she fished out her keys from a leather coat pocket, picked up and pulled on when they left the restaurant.
You know why. Cinder didn’t show it, but inwardly she made a face at the thought.
She couldn’t replace what had never been, lost before it could be.
But maybe she just didn’t want Emerald to wind up in a situation like she had once been, either.
“Passenger seat,” Emerald said, figuring her odds of breaking out a window and making any potential ambush difficult would be easier from the front seat. Besides which.... despite herself she was beginning to trust the strange woman. Her story seemed ridiculous and implausible but somehow that made it more believable. Besides which money talked.
She closed the gap with her semblance as she climbed into the car with her illusionary double, the telltale headache creeping in at her temples, but there was one more test...
Cinder would see Emerald buckle herself in and settle into the seat and then almost immediately fall asleep, head lolling backwards as she apparently succumbed to the relative luxury of a comfortable car seat and an overly full belly.
From behind her illusion, Emerald watched for what her supposed hostess would do, waiting for a sign of harmful intent or other nefarious purposes.
