It is absurd to divide people into good or bad. People are either charming or tedious. – Oscar Wilde
To start with, most of us tend to compare people we are communicating with and divide them into special groups. We divide them by their traits of character, by their intellectual quotient, by appearance and even by religious beliefs and political views. The list is endless, isn't it?
The author of the quotation gives us another point that allows us to divide people: whether they are charming personalities or tedious ones. As for me, I agree with Oskar Wilde's viewpoint.
I guess, that our physical appearance is always evaluated alongside our body language, namely voice and temperament. So, charm really trumps beauty.
Yes, we should admit that at first good clothes open all doors. When we see a good-looking person, we become more attracted to his/her appearance. But that's not enough because we start understanding a person only during some conversation. We take into account his/her manners, emotional expressiveness and social skills. Actractiveness is one of components that contribute to the personal overall likeability , but it's not the most important factor how we perceive those who are around us. When we notice that a person with Chiseled features has nothing in common with us, he doesn't know how to behave and unaware of some life things to discuss, it's a sure sign that we won't consider him to be charming for us. That person may only foster empathy but not interest, or in some cases that person you speak to may even grind your gears. Neither sparkling cat's eyes, nor curvaceous figure, neither artificial smile with even teeth, nor histrionic manners will help to improve the image in our eyes.
I'm sure that every person should demonstrate those whom he/she starts communication with that he/she likes that person. It really has a big influence on the way how others view you. You should express interest in what others say, giving to them a subtle smile, lightly touching their arm now and then, telling your own life stories and asking leading questions. The interlocutor will feel more comfortable around you, flattered and, consequently, even more attracted to your personality because you are that person who is able to make conversation. That will make you a good person in his/her eyes. And your appearance may be put on the back. All your imperfections, back braces, glasses or brackets remain unnoticeable.
Taking into consideration everything mentioned above, we all judge a book by its cover when we see him/her. There is no doubt that good looks play a big role, but having charm you can prolong your relationships with others, because you attract them more than those who remain motionless and listless to what others say instead of discussing a topic or even showing interest.
