BACKSTORY
thereās no denying the global impact of the kim family and the money such a union brought in. renowned in south korea, the kim name carries with it the kind of weight one might associate with royalty, overshadowed only by the memory of tragedy.
planned and particular in everything that they do, the kim parents planned to have a single son. he would go into either the fatherās place of politics or the motherās lucrative business ventures. he would be given the illusion of choice though his skillset would ultimately determine their outcome.Ā
yuri was not this planned child.Ā
his elder brother yubin had been the intendedĀ āheirā; himself a (mostly unhappy) accident
it wasnāt so much a lack of love but, rather, a lack of attention. love yuri got in abundance but not from expected sources. his parents doted upon yubin; yubin doted upon yuri.Ā
the public also loved the pretty second son. fair skinned and sweet faced, he completed the picture of the perfect family presented to the whole of korea -- hiding a fragmented reality just under the surface.
as only a small child (in age and physically) he was taught his appearance means everything -- be that reputation-wise or in a more literal sense. since he was not the expected inheritor, he need only learn for the sake of learning.Ā
then desperate for his parentsā attention and approval, yuri worked twice as hard to keep up with his brother. he studied topics well above his age and learned quickly. naturally intelligent, he absorbed new information with fervor but, careful not to outshine the favored son, he kept himself humble and only shared achievements when directly addressed.
the first blow to the kim came when both boys were still pre-pubescent. their mother became sick. terribly so. to the point where she could no longer serve as acting CEO and handed the business off. it was said to be a temporary power shift -- into the trusted hands of her brother until her son came of age -- and yuri blindly believed this would be the case.Ā
as her condition deteriorated and their father split all his time between hospital trips with her and governmental obligation, the two boys were left on their own more often than not. their uncle became overly involved in their lives in the absence of parental guidance but yuri quickly came to learn it wasnāt a good thing.Ā
conniving but secretive, even a small yuri could recognize red flags in his uncle but with so much else to worry about and in no position of power to stop the inevitable, yuri tried his best to focus on what was important: his family, his studies, his future.
the latter would come to fruition far sooner than yuri would have expected. his father wanted to bring yubin to visit the hospital in switzerland where their mother was residing. he was to learn the family business secrets and begin preparing to take over as soon as he came of age. the two left on a plane, leaving yuri behind with their uncle, but they would never return.Ā
loss is hard enough to process but even harder when, overnight, yuri suddenly bore the entire weight of his family name. his uncle ran for government, stealing his fatherās place almost immediately and yuri resented him for it. as if he needed more reason to hate the man.Ā
while he was far off taking the position himself, he could focus his efforts on taking back the family business. his mother was still alive, after all, and so he steeled himself against the ache of mourning, the crushing feeling of loss, and the overwhelming presence of his uncle in his life and focused on learning everything he could from her.Ā
PRESENT
from the tender age of 13, yuri had closed off. any cherubic sweetness of his youth was stolen from him and he became cold, calculating, though stayed just shy of the cruelness of his uncle. he kept to himself and the more enigmatic he became, the more the general public took an interest.
he worked harder than ever, earning top marks with his private tutors and gleaning every last drop of business sense he could from his ailing mother. there was no time for the frivolities of teenhood but as he matured, kmedia took notice.
he was beautiful -- a face made for acting and a body built for dance. even his voice was honeyed, soft and sweet despite the fact that seldom few heard it for longer than strictly necessary.
by 18 he was one of koreaās most eligible bachelors (the family inheritance didnāt hurt), though because of his standoffish demeanor and seeming disinterest in dating, he was dubbed anĀ āice princeā of sorts.Ā and by 20 he was shipped off to belvedere.
it couldnāt really be avoided. he needed a degree and as much as heād like to stay as guard dog for his uncle -- to make sure he doesnāt make any moves to fully usurp what is rightfully his -- formalities were important.Ā
PERSONALITY
pristine is probably the best word to describe a first impression of yuri. immaculately dressed, incredibly precise with his words and carrying himself with a formality that doesnāt quite suit the modern world, heās a prince of his own making.
in his second year, yuriās not here to make friends but has amassed a handful who respect him and his hardened exterior. or maybe theyāre just hoping to see the icy demeanor thaw and be one of the few allowed in closer than armās length.
incredibly bright and hardworking combined, yuriās absolutely the test youāll want to lean over and cheat off of -- not that heād let you. heās been getting top marks since his arrival, undeterred by the party-inclined lifestyle of the rich.
some may find his formality and closed off nature to be pretentious, arrogant, maybe even hostile but he allows people their dislike of him. the only way in which heāll rise to a challenge is verbally, his wit allowing a tongue lashing of which no one wishes to be on the receiving end.
OTHER FUN FACTS
has a knack for languages and learns them just for fun. his most recent acquisition is norwegian
also, perhaps, why his vocabulary is littered with a slew of ... creative and downright vulgar suggestions and insults. heāll deliver lines thatād make the devil blush but with the face of an angel, seemingly unaffected by their lewdness
along that vein, heās still rumored to be a virgin since to the outside eye, heās never once engaged with anything romantic or otherwise (though not for lack of propositions)
has your typicalĀ ārich boyā skills but excels in fencing in particular. his trainer once remarked that they better never give him a real sword or theyāll have created a monster
his mother is still alive and acts as his one major soft spot. his voice turns fond when speaking of her and his carefully crafted impassive expression breaks, only slightly. heāll facetime / skype her whenever possible and despite a fear of planes, visits as often as he can
iāll probably add to this as i play him more but for now i have no way of ending this so /end (connections page coming soon maybe but any basic ideas are a great place to start!)
a loud yawn passes artemisā lips , the femme murmuring out a quick sorryĀ to her peers that surrounded her . studying is something that she had managed the ace while in high school , but right now , all those tactics that had helped her are seemingly uselessĀ as she stares at the document full of notes and her lab findings .Ā
slowly closing the screen of her laptop , and packing up her belongings , artemis had admittedly notĀ been paying attention as she made her way out of the library . cursing under her breath as her phone flies from her hand as she collides with someone .Ā ā i am so sorryĀ ! ā her words are still quiet , moving to go and grab her phone off the floor .Ā ā i really shouldāve been paying attention , i , uh , sorry ! āĀ Ā /Ā Ā @elitesinfoā
yuri could hear it. the sickening impactĀ of a phone screen falling flat to the ground. heās there to meet artemis, under the impression that theyād study together for a while and then head to a cafe to refuel. she seems to have a headstart on the latter and yuriās not going to complain -- heās plenty prepared for his exam monday -- but heās afraid thereās been a casualty.Ā āiām alright, iām alright,ā yuri insists with a shrug, āitās not me you have to apologize to though.ā he grits his teeth as artemis assesses the damage.Ā ādid she make it?ā she being the phone, of course.
anders rolling his eyes as he opens the cooler and surprisingly enough pulls out a bottle of chardonnay that he had specifically gotten for yuri knowing that heād be in one of his moods. to be quite honest anders thought that yuri was always in a mood as he pulls out the bottle of chardonnay and pulls the cork screw off. anders wasnāt a fan of that stuff to be honest, but really he wasnāt a fan of beer either but to him chardonnay tasted like dirt.Ā ājust for you, would you like a glass? i think i packed one for you.ā he says with a hum searching thru his shelves.Ā
if heās surprised, he doesnāt show it on his face. not only is there a bottle underneath all the beer and hard seltzer cans but itās unopened -- just for himĀ as anders teases. itās even corked and not one of those cheap twist offs at which he turns up his nose.Ā āyou packed a glass for me?ā yuri tilts his head, reaching out to take the bottle so anders could continue his search uninhibited. āhow thoughtful. iāll be sure to have a talk with my people and make sure my keeper gets a raise. iām very impressed.ā although it might sound sarcastic to anyone else, itās delivered without yuriās typical sardonic tone. the words may be joking but the sentiment, to anders at least, is clear.
āwait wait wait, can you do this?ā anders asks popping a whole in the bottom of the can before chugging the rest of the beer. anders wasnāt much of a drinker to be quite honest but this past few weeks has been stressful. nearly already chugging about half the can he pulls out another one from the cooler and hands it to the other.Ā āwant one? school hours are over with until tomorrow.ā he says with a shrug not even really thinking about it.Ā
āwhy would i want to do that?ā yuri scoffs but itās notĀ derisively. he watches with mild fascination as most of the can is drained. his gaze follows the other towards the cooler and his nose crinkles.Ā ānot beer,ā he hums, a hand on his hip.Ā ādo they have any wine coolers in there? i highly doubt youāll pull out a glass of chardonnay but iād take anything that isnāt... that.ā this isnāt usually his scene and yuri doesnāt do much drinking. instead, heās there to keep an eye on his teammate. or so heāll tell himself.Ā
It had been one thing after the other today for Jordi, his swim practice had went terribly which had set him up for a bad day and his negative attitude had only gotten worse as time went on. His attitude had been signalling to everyone to stay away but not everyone had gotten that signal apparently, as the person beside him started talking. Letting out a loud sigh Jordi turned to face them,Ā āListen thereās no nice way to say this, but unless youāre telling me that Iām on fire or that youāre about to die do you really need to be talking to me right now?ā @elitesinfoāĀ
he hadnāt been speaking to the person beside him. in fact, if it werenāt for the fact that the other had practically a foot of height on him, he might not even have noticed him. but the airpod heās using for his call is in the opposite ear and yuriās never been the type to put up with intolerable self-importance so he makes no move to inform the third year of his mistake. he would much rather entertain himself with the otherās ire.Ā āwhile you donāt strike me as the observant type, would you really need someone to inform you if youāve caught fire? wouldnāt that be -- oh -- excruciatingly obvious?ā yuri hasnāt even hung up his phone call and one of his motherās attendants prompts him to explain in confusion. he ignores them.Ā āyou caught me though. i only have three weeks to live and iām here to confess to my sordid fantasies of you and i getting together. what say you?ā though the statement is clearly sarcasm, itās delivered flatly. cold.
āiām certain the delilahās and carolineās of the world have been feeling your pain since long before tiktok came into existence. you are not alone in your suffering.ā thereās a tint to his voice, an edge, but for the most part heās in a good mood. enough to indulge,Ā āmy weeklong stay on the app amassed me a total of two followers. i think both were clearly lost as i had posted nothing but an icon.āĀ
āitās not even the pair i loseā¦itās just fucking one and then i have to keep buying a new pair because they donāt sell a single pod. maybe i just have weirdly shaped earsā¦ā she huffed, tucking hair behind her ears, flashing new diamonds that were newly gifted. thankfully she never lost a pair of earrings. that would be tragic.Ā āshut upā¦those are a thing? wonder if theyād work for airpods.ā
āasymmetrical jewelry is popular nowadays,ā yuri muses absently. though the spheres in which he runs are prone toĀ āfirst world problems,ā even this seemed particularly mundane.Ā āand your ears seem perfectly normal in shape. iām sure someone would happily customize your pair to suit a cuff and chain for your singular airpod. cartier perhaps?ā heās sporting a few of their bits and baubles today though doesnāt make any effort to show them off.
ā i can genuinely say i have no idea what that song is nor what it would sound like so i suppose youāre safe. i only had that app on my phone for a week -- insipid dances and averagely pretty faces did nothing for me. ā
āso i just lost one of my air pods for like the millionth timeā¦maybe i should just start glueing them to my ears. then i wouldnāt keep running into this problem. please tell me this happens to you all of the time too?ā
@elitesinfoā
āi havenāt lost a pair, no. i suppose iām very good at taking care of whatās mine. perhaps you should invest in anti-loss earrings? they fasten to the bottom of a pod and cuff to your ear so if it falls out, it just dangles there until you realize.ā
