GRANDMAS IN LOVE LETS GO

Today marks the start of a challenge that I have personally subjected myself to as I adore the concepts of couple dynamics and wish to dedicate a whole month of my favourite ones. That's right, im gonna attempt to draw 29 FULL DAYS OF COUPLE DRAWINGS. Pray I can carry this on till the end of the month.

Anyways! Day 1: YukaYuyu!! This is such a fluffy yet tragic ship in the Touhou franchise. I like how Yukari considers Yuyuko as her only best friend and the fact they've been friends before Yuyuko's eventual demise. I imagined Yukari being absolutely devistated when Yuyuko committed suicide..... Ah, the tragedy....

What are your favourite chapters in FMW? Whether to actually play or story or whatever it is.

The objectively best chapter is Koishi’s chapter (you know the one), if only because it pushes the limits of the medium as a storytelling device.

I’ve already mentioned ones like Utsuho’s battle and the big Marisa vs. Reimu brawl in Imperishable Night, but while those are adrenaline pumping in their own ways it’s honestly a little stressful/exhausting to actually play out.

One of my personal favorites though is Yuyuko’s chapter. Despite not being especially interesting either in gameplay or in story, it’s extremely on-point thematically and I really appreciate that. The protagonists are desperate to stop Yuyuko from reviving the Saigyo Ayakashi, which would kill everyone I guess, but Yuyuko doesn’t care. And her apathy, the way she shows no interest whatsoever in you or your concerns, is apparent in absolutely everything about the stage.

From her music, which is extremely relaxed and not boss-like at all.

To her attack animations, where she just rambles on about the Fujimi girl while killing you offhandedly.

To the way the Saigyo Ayakashi blooms just a little bit more each spellcard, as if fighting her is meaningless.

Even gameplay-wise her entire battle has one solitary theme: inevitability. Unlike most bosses who have a wide variety of special effects on their spellcards, Yuyuko basically just has one: you cannot heal. At first it’s just a penalty to healing effects, then nullified, and finally reversed, but the point is the same. You will die, eventually. You can’t push it back, so it’s just a matter of time.

Oh yeah, while I’m at it I should mention that spellcards “unfold” in kinda cool looking ways, just as a general FMW thing. It’s just another aspect of the presentation of these games that is so amazing. Spellcards are fundamentally art, not just attacks.

Anyway, it’s cool.
