His head shot up, eyes looking wildly around him. He could see the female tributes body relaxing, relieved that it was someone she didn't know, someone she didn't have to care about. The two men next to him both choked on sobs, the smallest bending over in relief and guilt. Jinhyuk didn't know how to act or what to do, didn't know where to go.

The only reason he sirvived was because he was a coward, a filthy fucking coward who hid from everyone, and killed a 12 year old who he promised to protect. His hands were shaking, his vision blurry as he stood, emotions numb to the cheers of the crowd around him. She was just 12, so scared of everything and of being hurt- he took her in and kept her warm and safe and fed and then he slit her throat while she was sleeping because he was scared and she was so so easy to take down. He waited in the trees until the few remaining survivors found her, watched as they buried her, gave her the decency she deserved and then dropped the hornets nest on them.

He watched the replay over and over when he was out. That girls face was in his mind forever, and now he was getting what he deserved. He didn't want to die, he realised. Maybe he thought he did before, but now, with the thought of just disappearing? Jinhyuk was scared, down to his very fucking core, of dying away in a battlefield, with some careers blade deep in his neck, he was scared of the woman across from him, of her will and skill and her want to get back to her child and husband. With dead weight legs, he made it to the front of the stage and half bowed, dreading coming back up. Eyes focused dead centre in front of him, he straightened, his soul leaving him with every centimetre.

The tears were falling down her face already. Not of her own accord, not for her own life or her own safety. No, these tears weren’t hers, they were not falling from her eyes. They were for her child. For her husband, sitting on the other side of the stage, the sound of his sobs reaching her already. Everything was already going so wrong, the world crumbling around her. Taehyung wouldn't get picked, if he did then Matthew would volunteer. He had to, right? Matt knew what it meant to them to have someone there for their daughter. She was only 6 weeks old, she needed someone there to help her grow up strong, to fight when the time came for the world to crumble down around them.

A gentle hand pushed her up, towards the front of the stage, where everyone was staring and crying for her- with her. Her legs trembled as she walked like a newborn fawn, struggling to make it through the thick grass and make it to the other side. The scar from her c-section was still healing, she wasn't ready yet- she couldn't do this. She turned around to look at Taehyung, watching him cry while the tears fell endlessly from both of them. Maybe she wouldn't make it back. Maybe she would, but that was such a small chance that she couldn't try and give herself hope. She only survived by chance last time, it wouldn't work again this time. She was far from a fighter, and she couldn't train quickly enough and safe enough to avoid hurting her new scar.

She locked eyes with Matthew, and nodded to him, checking if he was still going to help her, help Taehyung if he was picked. His eyes watered and wavered but he nodded, head dropping until he was staring at the floor, body shaking with silent sobs. Her eyes trailed the floor until she was facing front again, ignoring the escort when they tried to talk to her. She would not talk. She would not react. She would not survive. But she would fight.
