helix shrugged noncommittally. “i know i can. i just… don’t anymore. it’s easier that way,” she said. “i figured there was no point getting emotional about something that i couldn’t change.”

“littlest sister, bottling up your emotions only ever ends negatively,” zaire stated. “even if it is something unchangeable, talking about it can help immensely.”

Oliver let out a nervous laugh. “Honestly, I have no idea.” Oliver walked over to the man, he looked familiar. What was his name again? Oh! It was Zaire. He was in his American Literature class back in the spring. Oliver wasnt very familiar with poetry he typically found himself feeling silly while reading it. “What are some of your favorites?” Maybe Zaire could help him figure it out?

zaire gave a soft laugh, nodding slightly. “understandable. poetry can be confusing if you don’t know what you’re looking for,” he said, offering a small smile. “well, you can never go wrong with edgar allan poe --- a true classic. shakespeare is okay, not my favourite. robert frost. i really enjoy sylvia plath’s work, to be honest.”

“they are, they very much are.” she knew that for a fact. acting indifferent to it was how she coped. “it doesn’t bother me. not anymore, at least. you live and you learn.”

zaire bunched his lips at one side, in thought. “i suppose you do, but ... you are allowed to let things bother you, littlest sister. it is perfectly okay if something does. it is perfectly normal.”

i know he thinks bad of himself. there's really no way to NOT feel bad about yourself when you're a beldam. but, i want to show him how amazing and utterly good he is. he's so good. i'll do whatever it takes to show him because it's in him. i believe it!

“little sister, you have so much goodness in you, it overflows. you teach me to be good again every day. thank you, bubbles~”

he always tries to convince me that i'm not a monster, but i never believe him, but i want to believe him. he deserves a little sister who won't be constantly putting herself and everyone around her down because she's too gloomy, but i don't know how to change.

“littlest sister, you’re amazing. please, don’t ever think otherwise, okay? you don’t need to change. i love you a whole bunch.”

Oliver was nervous about starting school again. He was supposed to be doing a summer reading on poetry and to bring in his favorite book of poetry. Truth was, Oliver knew nothing about poetry, his favorite books were those fun sci fi books. So, here he was in the poetry section of a bookstore, attempting in vain to understand what the hell he was looking at. Oliver turned to his left and noticed a boy there, he was engrossed in a book. “Uhm, hi, could you help me? I have to pick a book of poetry and honestly, I have no idea what to pick.”

zaire had been out in town to get a few new poetry books, since he had already read all of the ones he owned. he was engrossed in one of the books he’d chosen, when he heard an unfamiliar voice speak in his general direction. “huh?” he questioned, looking up from the pages. “oh, yeah, no problem. what are you looking for? anything specific?”

“that hardly makes things okay, but i’m used to it,” she said, tone a little flippant. “and like you said, it’s no big deal. and it’s also not my problem.”

“i mean, it doesn’t make things okay, but ...” he sighed. “people are just like that, i suppose. --- but, yeah, no big deal, really ... unless it bothers you or something, of course. in which case, yes big deal.”

“Well your guess would be right.” She replied as she leaned her back up against the lamp post behind her. “I’m Adelaide Lovat but most people just call me Addie.” she introduced herself. 

zaire nodding, offering a small smile. “it is a pleasure to meet you, addie. i’m zaire beldam.”

“based on statistics, it’s more likely i’ll eat a soul than not.” she didn’t want to. she definitely didn’t want to, not when she knew what it could do. but she didn’t see any way for her to stop herself from eating. “staying away from the other students seems to be the easiest way to stop myself.”

zaire pursed his lips, looking down at his hands. she had a point. she really had a point. “helix, you can’t just stay away from the student body,” he pointed out. “you have a roommate. you have classes. you have responsibilities here --- ones that involve other people.”

Her pout quickly turned to a trimputhaint smile. “Thanks, I’m glad someone does.” She had to make up for her small size somehow. 

he smiled, nodding slightly. “no problem,” he gave a soft laugh. “so, you’re new here? just a hunch.”

helix didn’t know which was worse – their mother not behaving like their mother, or their mother coming home completely normal, as though she hadn’t done such terrible things. either way, helix wouldn’t have been able to cope. she hadn’t. “you can say that as much as you want, but what happens when i get hungry? i can’t control it forever, surely.”

zaire bunched his lips at one side as he thought. she had a point, he knew that. “you ...” he began. “you’ve made it this long. who’s to say a beldam can’t go forever without eating a soul?” he was sure it was possible. how could it not be?

Addie hummed out in thought, not quite sure how to explain it. “Well you know how Yoda was small but he could still kick ass? Yeah that’s pretty much the same thing with me..only people don’t think I can kick ass.” she added with a pout. 

zaire clicked his tongue, nodding slightly. “ah. i gotchu,” he said. “yeah, i feel like a lot of people around here are like that. don’t worry, though, i totally believe you can kick ass.” he gave a small smile.

the beldam let out a soft laugh. “why the bitterness?” he asked, looking to the girl. “i mean, if you don’t mind my asking, of course.”

“that doesn’t mean it didn’t affect me. mama wasn’t… mama anymore.” that was the only way she could think to explain it. whoever had come back from auradon wasn’t her mother. it was the only way she could think of it, to insist that she wasn’t always this way, but it was proving difficult. “yet,” she corrected him. “i haven’t done anything monstrous yet. it’s probably only a matter of time.”

“i-i know ... well, i don’t know, obviously, but i can imagine ...” growing up, their mama was always loving --- at least, to them, she was. he hated to imagine their mama not being their mama. “no,” he insisted immediately. “you won’t. you don’t have to, helix --- you don’t.”
