“Then I will gladly help as much as you two wish.  I’m sure Annie’s already got ideas.  Many women think about that sort of thing even if the relationship isn’t there yet,” she admitted.  It’s not like she hadn’t considered what a wedding with Eric would be like.  “I’m sure that’s not true.  Have you ever done something for her just to make her smile or make her day easier?  Or brought up something she told you a long time ago?  I personally think the best kind of romance is the little gestures, not the big ones,” she told him, smiling softly.  “I appreciate your trust.  Now go on.  Bring those back with you and try on the first one.”

Tarzan raised his eyebrows.  How he could come so far in society and still not know so much was mystifying.  “Do you believe so?  And this is based on your experiences?” 

He devolved into silence as he tried to remember instances of what she said.  “Yes.  But those are just being considerate, are they not?  Romance is something extra.”

“Yeah, I don’t think love has anything to do with that.” She wrinkled her nose. “I don’t know. Having someone to take care of you, maybe? Or being close to someone who’s that rich, or famous, or important. I agree though, it doesn’t seem worth it.”

Tarzan just shook his head.  He knew he was in good company with Molly, but this conversation overall fostered less trust in other people.  He wondered how he’d been so fortunate to stumble on Jane or Annie to love when there were so many poor options.  “I feel the more important people believe themselves to be, the more dangerous they are.  They think they can do anything without facing consequences.  I can think of nothing less loving than that.”

“It’s basically when someone rich and powerful marries someone attractive as, like, a status symbol. It’s kind of gross, actually,” she chuckled.

Tarzan pulled a face.  Really, the more he learned, the less civilized society truly seemed and the more distaste for it accrued.  “That is rather gross.  Why would two people agree to that?  I admit I’m new to the concept of being in love, but that seems like the only good reason to be with someone.”

“Oh, I would really like that.  To be involved in helping make that day more special.  I might prefer an adventure, but I could never pass up a good romance,’ she admitted, smiling sweetly over at him.  “Good.  If you do, you will either have to get this refitted, or you might have to get a new suit altogether,” she explained.  “Now, why don’t we try to find the color that you feel more comfortable in, and then we can start working on the style,” she suggested, walking over and grabbing a grey, black, blue, and even tan suit for him to try.  “This will be a process, but I will try and help shorten it as best as I can.”

“I think mixing those two things might fit both me and Annie very well,” he admitted with a small shrug.  “And I don’t know anything about romance.” He looked dubiously at her selections, unsure about the length of this.  It was a lot of trying things on.  “That would be appreciated.  But I know you won’t lead me astray, so I’m in your hands.”

“Ah, you caught on to my plan,” she laughed softly. A small practical joke wasn’t beyond her, but his anxiety over this event didn’t seem like a small thing. It wasn’t something she would mess around with. “Are you sure? Pretty and quiet sounds like the perfect trophy husband.” She smirked.

He smiled and shook his head at her.  It turned to more of a quizzical glance with her smirk.  “I’m not sure what that is.”

“Right, of course.  That makes sense,” she nodded, laughing softly at how off-the-mark she had been.  “Well, don’t let my foolishness make you feel rushed.  You will know when the time is right,” she assured.  “Now, I assume you do not intend to change much about your physique moving forward?”

Tarzan smiled.  “I won’t.  I think I will also need help planning what to do, so I may ask you before the time is right. You and I will both know.”  He hoped his smile was reassuring, but he could never be entirely sure what his face was communicating.  “No, I don’t have plans to.”

“Would I steer you wrong?” It wasn’t really a question. Molly might give him shit, but she wouldn’t intentionally mislead him about something like that. “So, what’s the occasion?”

Tarzan chuckled and narrowed his eyes.  “Maybe.  I’ve been pushing you  pretty hard lately.  It might be payback.”  He didn’t really think she’d do something dastardly, but a small practical joke wouldn’t be unexpected.  

“Fundraiser dinner,” he explained.  He grimaced and shook his head.  “Nothing I’m going to be any good at.  My plan is to dress the part and stay quiet.”

His confusion had her slowing her speaking towards the end, her brows pinching together in similar confusion until he explained that the suit was not for the wedding she assumed was coming soon and for something else.  “Oh, I’m sorry.  I assumed…  What is this for then, exactly?”

“It seems like a wise investment.  I’ve needed one for a few events, but now I have the means to actually buy one.  And I’ve considered asking her in a formal way, but I haven’t made any decisions yet.”

He watched her go, knowing he was mostly useless and feeling it twice as much as normal.  The fact that first Jane, and now Annie and Molly, tolerated him, was astounding.  He put on the shoes she’d brought, glad they didn’t have thin laces to attempt or any fanciful decoration.  

“They are definitely not as comfortable as what I have – or going barefoot.  But they just might do.  Unless you think I could wear what I already have in all black.” 

She stepped back to give him room and also so she could admire the full effect. “They look nice.” She nodded, narrowing her eyes slightly at him. “You can’t wear black sneakers with a suit. It will ruin the whole thing.”

He rolled his eyes and sighed.  “Fine.  I suppose I will take you at your word.  If you promise these shoes are for the best.”

“I mean, I think it will come down to if Annie’s okay with it.  While a wedding is meant to be the best day of both of your lives, it is really the bride’s biggest day,” she admitted.  “If I had say in what I wore at my wedding to Gaston of all people, I think Annie will be more than understanding if you’d prefer a more casual look,” she assured.  “Besides, if she knows you at all, I’m sure she would prefer you in a look that was more reflective of your personality than what is traditionally worn.”

He gaped at her for a moment, unsure exactly what she meant for a moment.  It wasn’t until she said the word wedding twice that he clued in.  “Oh.  This isn’t for.. I haven’t... I’m not... not yet.  Not until you’ve found something.”  He pressed his lips together, mostly to stop the fumbling for words.  “But I do think you’re right.  She has been understanding thus far.”

Molly wasn’t unsympathetic to his situation. This world was weird for a lot of people, and everyone had different adjustment periods. In fact, she doubted some of them would ever completely adjust. Just because she wanted to belong there didn’t mean everyone did. “Ten sounds about right.” She nodded, getting to her feet to find him some shoes in the right size, sans heels. She found a pair that were pretty standard black and offered them. “Give these a try. They won’t be as comfortable as what you have, but if they hurt, then they’re probably the wrong size.”

She laughed softly at whatever could make stone-faced Tarzan blush like a schoolboy. It was even better that she knew what that thing was. “What size are the shoes you wore in here? It usually says on the bottom, or maybe the inside.”

He didn’t love the feeling that she was laughing at him, even though there was nothing malicious about it.  He tried to give her a side-eye, but he probably failed miserably, because in the end he wasn’t that mad about it.  His face crumpled as he tried to remember -- but numbers were definitely not his strongest suit.  He had to go retrieve his shoes from the dressing room before he could answer her, finding a faded tag inside the athletic shoes he preferred to wear for work.  “I believe this says 10.  It has been a while since I bought them.”  He shrugged, unapologetic as he dropped knowledge she probably could’ve guessed.  “I’m not much of a shopper.”

Belle nodded when he unbuttoned the top button, his comment causing her to laugh softly before she stood and looked him over.  “Maybe a classic tuxedo isn’t the right thing for you.  Have you considered something a little more casual?  Something that doesn’t make you feel stifled.”

He tried to stand up straight and not fidget under her scrutiny, but that wasn’t the easiest task for him.  Her words made him breathe a sigh of relief, though.  “Is that an option?”

“If it helps, you look very handsome.  But comfort is an important factor here, so clearly this suit is not the one for you.  Is there anything that you do like about it?”

Tarzan looked at his old friend skeptically.  He had no real reason to doubt what she said, but he doubted it anyway just based on its qualities.  He reached for the button hiding underneath his bowtie.  The top button was the worst.  Undoing it, or the ability to, might have been the tux’s only saving grace.  “The fact it has an escape hatch?”

Molly was kind of used to Tarzan’s stone face, and she’d learned not to take it personally. She got up to peruse the shoe options, since she was there to help, not just to give him a hard time. “It is sometimes, but they make our legs look great. I kind of like cute girls in heels, so I guess it’s the least I can do to wear them once in a while. What’s your shoe size?”

His stone face turned to a wary eyeing for a moment.  “Definitely no heels for me,” he said.  “But... I suppose I can appreciate them on some people.”  It was possible he blushed a little, thinking of Annie and things that made her sexy to him.  “I... don’t know.  How do I tell?”

Molly was immune to stern gazes, at least when they weren’t in the middle of training. She was kind of enjoying him being the one suffering for a change. “Usually the girls wear the heels, but no judgment.”

Stern was mostly how his face was set when he was talking about the finer details of the world.  It wasn’t actually directed at her anyway.  He kind of appreciated that she didn’t flinch and maybe looked a little amused.  “Good.  That’s good.  But why would they?  That sounds miserable.  I hate shoes to begin with, but making them more difficult to walk in doesn’t sound wise.”
