“Oh ha-ha, you’re hysterical,” Charlie grumbled, making a face emphatically at the blonde. He slipped his hands into the pockets of his jeans casually, every sense finely tuned to every movement Zelda made even as she looked at him properly. Had it been coming from anyone else he was almost positive her teasing would have annoyed him, would have sent him off with a frown and several passing crude gestures to add to it all, but something about her made it impossible for him to care. Every effort he’d ever made to pretend he was heartless and cold had never lasted long in the face of the genuine love of people he harbored somewhere deep in his chest— he attached to people far more easily than he ever wanted to admit, and somehow anyone who spared him more than a passing moment’s attention formed a small, indelible mark somewhere in him.
Zelda, he mused, must have made quite a sizable mark by now. He reached up to run a hand along his jaw— two weeks worth of stubble prickled gently against his palm, and he very nearly asked Zelda what she’d think of it if he decided to grow a proper beard before he thought better of it and allowed himself to let his hand fall and slip into his pocket. “Free alcohol’s a pretty good reason to go to anything, innit it? It’s part of the reason I go to any of this formal shit if I’m not featured,” He paused, sneaking a glance in the space the words left before him, “Plus, I can’t say no to anything I’ll get to see you at. It’s a hell of a thing.” He glanced briefly at his watch, “We gettin’ close to yours?”
Zelda watched out of the corner of her eye as Charlie reached up, rubbing his fingers along the stubble that had grown in since the last time she saw him. It looked good on him - too good. Part of her wondered what it would be like to feel it chafe against her own skin; the other, more rational part of her, shut that thought down as quick as it came. Swallowing, she looked away to hide her blush, his comments causing a visceral reaction that Zelda couldn’t really fight; she only had to make sure that he didn’t see it. The idea that Charlie wanted to see her warmed her core and made her thoughts whirl in directions she couldn’t control.
“You see me all the time,” she retorted, trying to salvage herself from her reaction. “It’s not like you need to use showings as an excuse.” She pressed her hands into her pockets to do something else with them, snorting as she shook her head. “You’re already tired of walking with me? You’re the one who offered.” She would understand, though. Not many people gave her the time of day. However, they were close, and she pointed up to her building, where her flat waited. “It’s just up here,” she admitted, and glanced over at him, this time meeting his gaze rather than hoping that he didn’t catch her staring. “Would you like to come up?” she asked, her voice suddenly quiet.
