Whenever I see blue roses, I think of Tennessee Williams’ play The Glass Menagerie. In that play, Jim calls Laura “Blue Roses,” a mispronunciation of “pleurosis,” a disease that caused Laura to miss a lot of high school. But “Blue Roses” flips Laura’s flaw into a symbol of her unusual, otherworldly qualities.
“They’re common as—weeds, but—you—well, you’re—Blue Roses!”
Laura is based on Williams’s sister, Rose, who underwent a lobotomy while he was writing the play, and the nickname is a tribute to her.
