The two books that I picked are The Future of Reputation: Gossip, Rumor, and Privacy on the Internet, by Daniel J. Solove and The Facebook Effect: The Inside Story of the Company That Is Connecting the World, by David Kirkpatrick (Simon & Schuster, 2010). The reason I picked these two books is because I think they both sound pretty interesting. The first one I think is important because it talks about privacy on the internet and the second one is about Facebook. I saw the movie the Social Network and I thought it was a very interesting movie about how Facebook was created.

After reading a short summary of The Facebook Effect I have have learned that the book doesn’t talk about how to use Facebook or anything of that sort. It pretty much explains where the idea of Facebook has come and how it was created. I think this will be a great book to read about because I personally would love to know how the idea of making such an amazing social network site came to be.

            In the first book The Future of Reputation I read a short summary about it and it talks about Facebook and how it’s opened its records to searching on Google for instance and all other privacy issues relating social media sites. I think this is an interesting topic because we all want to have our privacy while using social media sites.

            I think that these two books go together well because while creating Facebook they had to think about how to make the privacy settings. These two topics interchange each other because a lot of the issues people have with using social media sites is how safe they are and how private they keep your information. Twitter for instance is not very private because everything you post everyone can see usually. So these are the two books I have picked.

I do think social media is taking over the way we watch TV. Most shows I watch now on tv I always see hash tags at the bottom of the screen to tweet about the show. One of my favorite shows to watch is White Collar every time I watch it they always show a tweeter winner that has posted on the White Collar Twitter site. This show really tries to make you interact with their twitter account. They even have special sneak peaks on episodes that are coming out. 

I personally don't think it's that important to tweet about shows and other things. I think that if your famous or a celebrity then yes you should be tweeting about your favorite show and parts of the show. You have millions of followers and they want to hear what you have to say about a show they might be watching too. 

I think that smartphone tweeting happens a lot more then tweeting on a  computer because when your tweet something it's usually something that pops into your head and you want to tell everyone about it then and there. Same thing with Facebook or Twitter pictures when your doing something and take an interesting picture you usually don't wait till you get home to upload it to a social media site. You usually just upload the picture right there and then to let everyone know. So I think smartphone tweeting and Facebooking is taking over how we use social media now a days.

This article is very interesting mainly because of what Villa is mentioning. The fact that parents do not know what is going on with their kids and social media is one thing, but there is a huge digital divide with the parents and children concerning it and neither is doing anything about it, then...

I disagree with this and don't think parents should be connected with Facebook. If they are connected I think it should just be used for personal use. I don't believe that they should be following their children because I know I post a lot of things on Facebook that I wouldn't want my parents to see. I find Facebook book as my way to express what I'm feeling and what I want people to see. I do think that parents should know what there children are doing in life but just let them have there own fun on Facebook. You should still know what your kid is doing with drinking and other things though. It's important to stay close with your children so they can trust you incase they ever get in trouble. So overall I believe parents should not be using Facebook unless it's for there own personal use there is no need to follow their own kids on Facebook and other social media sites.

Social media finally is stepping up and making special features and layout pages for brands. Many brands try to show off their products and company names on social media sites. This is a good strategy because there is so many users that are on their favorite social media site and could easily follow your page to see what new products you are offering.

On Twitter I personally follow Sprinkles Cupcakes and I always see tweets by them saying that if you whisper this word then you get a free cupcake that day. There are many Twitter brand pages that give out deals for followers. I think this is a good way to promote your brand and get people to have to follow you.

Facebook just announced that it would be featuring a new Timeline for brands. We all know about Facebooks new Timeline feature which many people like but just as many people hate it. I think it’s all a matter of getting used to something to like it. We are all used to using one layout and then a sudden change in a layout and we all freak out. After using the layout for a couple of months we don’t even remember what the old one looked like anymore. With the new Timeline feature Facebook has now made features for brands that will have a large masthead at the top of the page and become more photo intensive in the its layout.

So what we are learning here is that all the social media sites want to take a step toward treating brands as brands and not just another social media user. They want the brand pages to get the most out of them to help interact with user pages so everyone is winning. Social media can really change the way we follow companies and other products they are trying to sell.

Daniel Donahoo writes a very insightful article on how social media can lead to an unhealthy lifestyle. Creating cycles that keep people off track from things that are truly important or cyber addictions that make a person want to constantly update their accounts, see how many friends they have or see which of their friends has updated their accounts. Until now, I didn’t believe that “SNS’s”(Social Networking Sites) were that detrimental to anyone’s health but, after reading his thoughts on the topic, I thought differently.

He speaks on how these social networking sites (SNS) keep people from importanta day to day activities. Its like a vicious cycle almost, when we add new friends or see that we have new followers, we want to read their pages or look up there videos and response to every post and if this is continuous it can take a while to complete. Social networks are like a deadly addiction. 

Donahoo states that “when you have anxiety your worry doesn’t make sense”, its almost like a paranoia and anxiety mix, every body seems to be judging you it seems.  He felt that he had to keep reminding himself of his self worth because of his worry of what people might be thinking of him. Its kind of frightening when he lays out the gut wrenching truth. 

I thought it very interesting, when Donahoo stated that “emotions make social media”. As almost to say there is no escaping this anxiety, It will be apart of every and anyone he chooses to utilize social networking services. This reminds me of the social networking episode of south park when one of the characters felt overwhelmed with the hundreds of people that felt like, he needed to add them as friends and how it was too much for him or the other little boy who had no friends at all and seemed very depressed and gloomy. Social media is in the forefront of the digital divide but, it comes with a heavy burden for all of those  that utilize its services.

I do agree with this and think that social media does put anxiety on people but I think it also depends not the person. Some people are out there using Facebook and other social media sites just to interact with maybe one or two old friends they had or just too see how old faces they went to high school with. While others want to be friends with everyone they went to school with and when they post a status they want everyone to like it to make them feel good about themselves and make them feel like they are liked by everyone. Then you have the people who really don't have many friends just like the kids in the South Park episode who gets really excited when they do get a new friend on Facebook. So yes anxiety is definitely a part of the social media life.

I’m just going to come out and say it. Privacy is a personal responsibility. Simple as that. If you consider a piece of information private, then it is on you to take measures to make sure it stays that way. I do agree with you that you do expect websites to do the right thing about privacy. I think that people need to realize that no matter what you post on the web it's always going to be there and someone somewhere can find a way to see it. So whatever you put up on social media sites or anywhere else online you should be able to not care what others might do with that information because you never know who is looking into you. I no some people who won't even put but there last name on there Facebook and other social media sites and then there are people who would post almost about anything on there because they don't really know what can actually happened to them.

Ever wonder what school was like before Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, and Tumblr were around. Well it’s kind of hard to say for our time age group because no one really used laptops in school when there was no Facebook or any of these social media sites around. I could only imagine though that kids must have done much better in school without having to deal with this technology. Now a days a typical day in a college students life is go to class open up there computer and sit on social media sites until class ends, Pretty pointless, right? I think most kids know they aren’t going to do anything in class anyway but just go because they are obligated to show up to not feel bad about it. Well I read an article that talks about what teachers think about students using social media sites and this is what I found.

In the article “Social networking: teachers blame Facebook and Twitter for pupils’ poor grades” it asks teachers about how they think social media sites affect kids grades. Here is what some of the teachers had said "And as the teachers spell out, it is this obsession which has a direct impact on the future of our children - affecting their grades because they fail to complete their homework on time or to the standard required, and being unable to concentrate in class."  I completely agree with this because I know when I am about to start homework on the computer I always have to check my Facebook and see what everyone is doing. Then once I do actually start it I’ll just go back to Facebook and so on. This is just what happens to anyone that is trying to do homework or write a paper. Someone that should take only about thirty minutes to complete now took you about two hours.

Another issue that teachers had with kids being on social media sites are that you would fall into the texting, online chatting grammar use. What I mean by that is you would start to spell words like u, brb, lol, haha, wad up, gtg, and other slang words. Now you might think that there is no way anyone would be that stupid to actually use those words in papers but the truth is people actually do forget they are writing a paper for a grade and put those text speaking words in there papers. I know after a long summer of not having to type anything and coming back to school I mess things up all the time in my papers. This is just some of the ways social media is affecting people’s grades.

The main reason I choice this article is because I do think that social media has changed the way we go about our schoolwork. That’s why I think taking this class social media #mco435 it’s pretty cool how you actually have to follow Twitter and Tumblr to stay on top of your homework. So this is why I thought this was a good article to write about. It really is crazy to try to think about what we did before in school before Facebook, Twitter, and Myspace.
