A gruff, scratchy voice calling out.
The ticking of a clock, getting louder and louder.
The voice getting closer and closer.
It's him. He's getting closer. He's here!
Will wakes up with a startled gasp.
"whoa whoa take it easy."
A hand steady on his shoulder while he looks frantically around.
Mike gives him a small, almost constipated looking, smile.
"You saved us! You did it!"
Will blinks a few times, the memories slowly registering again.
The realisation fills him with joy, but it also fills him with dread.
He remembers now. The snap of the bones, the demogorgons falling to the ground. He did all that and he never realised he had it in him.
Will hesitates, unsure how to put into words the whirlwind in his mind.
Mike frowns, his brows knitting together.
"What if...I'm like...him?"
The words are hard to get out, he is shocked he even could without getting choked up.
Mike's entire face contorts to something almost comical.
"What? No, you would never be like him, never!"
He's so adamant about it, Will is almost moved.
"You don't know that. What if by doing that I became more like him? What if somehow he gets control again?"
The finality in his tone makes Wills next retort die on his tongue.
Mike has so much trust in him and sometimes Will has barely any trust in himself.
Yes what he did felt cool as hell but it also opened the door to many questions. Many what ifs that scared Will down to the bone.
A little chuckle escapes him.
"I am! I've never been more sure about anything in my life."
Will looks at him with slightly wide eyes. His certainty gives him a sense of comfort. That maybe, just maybe, this is a blessing in disguise and not some evil Vecna plot.
"What if I lose control?"
"But what if I will Mike?"
The panic in Will's voice makes him consider it for a split second.
"Then we fight it. Together. Like we always do."
Will feels his breath catching in his throat. Moments like this remind him why it's Mike, why it's always been Mike.
"Then we fight...Together."
Mike puts his hand on Will's shoulder and for the first time, Will has never been more sure of anything.
No matter what happens, Mike will always be there, will always pull him back from the edge, will always go to hell and back for him.
