"Everything begins with a dream" My inspiration for my next series of images. Who knew I'd get it from the coffee mug I use every morning?! Thank you Ate @annasyyap, it really is my favorite one 💗💚
Just saw this! Thank you @seaprincess888!!! Merry Christmas!!! A little preview of our photo with a handmade wig and corset I put together out of Inquirer Newspapers
Behind the Scenes: Tyler Ramsey for TOMS Shoes
My metaphor for how I deal with fear is eyes closed, head down, and just charging into it. -Tyler Ramsey,Rogue Magazine
As I've shared many times before, it's very important for me to get to know the people I photograph before taking their portraits. It may not be very practical or the easiest route to go with arranging schedules with clients, but for me, it is ALWAYS worth it.
Last September, I was given the privilege to photograph artist Tyler Ramsey during his quick trip here in Manila. I watched all the videos I could of him online and read up on interviews he had given in the past. But I still was hoping to meet him at least once before our actual shoot, to see if the concept I had for him was really fitting with his personality.
First Impressions
My prayers were answered when my husband Franco and I were given the chance to spend the day with Tyler during a tour of Manila planned by TOMS Philippines.
The ever-energetic and passionate Tyler by the Pasig River
I felt a big surge of positive energy the moment we were introduced to Tyler. We were having lunch, and he was just so excited about everything....the food, being in Manila for the first time, planning his live art performance....everything :) I was amazed when I remembered that this man just stepped off a plane from another jam-packed stop in Korea that same morning. Wow, this guy hits the ground running.
The Concept
The image I had in mind for Tyler was something dramatic and intense, maybe something even on the dark side. I was inspired by his story, and how he discovered he wanted to be a painter. I'm always amazed by people who are able to evolve from a challenging phase in their lives. It takes a certain kind of person to channel those emotions into something positive, and go further by getting involved in a cause much bigger than themselves.
The idea was to have Tyler sweating colored sweat, showing that whatever he puts on the canvas, really comes from within---filled with his energy, his emotion, and his intensity. I also wanted him surrounded by his Robots, tiny wooden pieces he painted and brought with him to Manila to auction for the Philippine Red Cross. I imagined Tyler in space, maybe an imaginary universe of neon colors, Robots and other creations.
Shoot Day
My favorite part of any shoot is the challenge of creating the environment for the portrait. I love how my tiny team gets hands-on in making this vision come to reality, even just for a few hours.
Cherynn (TOMS Philippines) and I had to string each and every shoe and get them "floating" ready to exist in Tyler's creative Outer Space.
My ever-supportive hubby Franco got a good workout that day after hanging all the shoes. I just love working with him because he shares the same meticulous attention to details I have when styling a set. You're the best darling! :)
I really felt Tyler's honesty and openness on set, which made my job a lot easier. I love working with people who just commit and trust me. Because of this, we got our shot on the 6th frame of the entire shoot! From there, we had the liberty to play, dance, and experiment :)
Here is a brighter take on Tyler- the energetic, infectious performing artist side of him, generously giving so much of his contagious creativity. If the first portrait (top of page) captures Tyler at the moment of creative break through, this image (below) is what happens after.
Thank you so much to Tyler Ramsey, Amanda Gray, and the TOMS Philippines Family! It was a pleasure working with you all!

Building my equipment for a new project coming soon...
I'd like to introduce you to Gino and Menchu---Now Mr. & Mrs. Macapagal :) I took this portrait before they took the final steps into entering their whole new adventure together as man and wife. It's a portrait that explores their personalities as individuals, as a couple, and memorable moments in the journey they took even before getting engaged.
As with all my portraits, my main goal is to create a personal creative experience for myself and those I photograph. With that, I felt extremely blessed to work with a couple who was so open and willing to share their story with me, giving me a wealth of elements to work with in creating a concept just for them.
Gino and Menchu live extremely busy lives, both hardworking and dedicated to their respective careers. Gino works for SMDC and Menchu is the lovely voice behind DJ Scarlet on 99.5 RT. When given a chance to take some time off, they like nothing more than to pack up their bags and rush to the beach. If not, then they choose to spend their downtime at home, lounging on their couch, and watching TV with their three dogs, Oscar, Bella, and Nala.
If possible, I always choose to use my Subject's personal belongings as props to style the image. I believe it adds another dimension to the portrait, and allows them to find another way of connecting with the image that is unique to them. There are so many symbols and meanings to all the things scattered around this image, some too personal to share on this blog. But, here are a few fun ones to look back on:
The pair of denim jeans on the sand belong to Menchu. They were a gift from Gino and are her favorite pair. They have holes on them from overuse, but she wears them anyway because she loves them so much!
The pretty pink jeweled shoes in the chest were the actual shoes Menchu wore on her wedding day, she was so cool to let me use them!
The headphones, vinyl records & player all symbolize DJ Scarlet
The helmet and medals all belong to Gino and represent his passion for being a triathlete. Menchu is his official cheerleader during races :)
The San Miguel Beer case represents how the couple first met---during a shoot of a SMB Commercial.
The Kylie Minogue album is a reminder of a very special event in their lives that happened during a Kylie Concert here in Manila :p
To Gino and Menchu,
It was a pleasure working with you and I am so grateful for being given this opportunity to learn about your amazing story. I wish you all the best! Cheers to you both!
Just got back from a trip to Osaka and the food was just awesome! During one of my meals, sitting by the sushi bar, I was served by a female sushi chef. I couldn't help but remember Hiromi Suzuki, a female sushi chef I featured in a short documentary I did way back in 2004. This film opened up so many doors for me. I was able to work with amazing people, explore NYC, and it even got me in the Berlinale Talent Campus in the Berlin Film Festival! In honor of Hiromi, her talent, and individuality, I am sharing this video with you. Enjoy :)
