A/N: I saw an old video (thanks Snapchat) and I got a serious case of angst.
Oh I didn’t proofread this, apologies in advance.
August.
A cursed month.
How could one be so naive, so stupid. You were warned, and damn you really should’ve listened.
One year ago was so different from now. You remembered it all too well.
“Don’t get involved with her Y/N.” Emily whispers as she looked in the same direction you were looking. “Doesn’t she have a boyfriend?”
“They broke up a long time ago.” You say, head slightly down. “I’m not the only one who’s been flirting.”
“She’s always on and off with the guy, are you really going to risk it?”
“We like each other Em, what’s so bad about trying to work it out?” You sincerely asked Emily, who could only shake her head in disbelief.
“I’m telling you this as your best friend, and someone who cares about you. Do not be naive, it’s just a fling. You know deep down that’s all it’ll be.”
“But what if it’s not.”
“I’m grabbing Naomi, she’s wise. Surely you’ll listen to her.”
Spoiler alert, you didn’t.
Alex walked into the dining room, Christen by her side as they talked about how once again, Kelley locked herself out of her room.
Your eyes met hers, it was as if you both knew to look. It was magical. She smiled at you with a smile that made you feel an insane amount of butterflies.
How could someone have this much of an impact on someone.
August couldn’t get any worse for you, the endless reminders that she just messed with you was enough.
But unfortunately your work was that endless reminder. You could never really escape her, she was everywhere, how could she not be everywhere. She’s the face of the sport.
Not only was she haunting you at home through a commercial, she haunted you every single time you played against her. But you hadn’t player her team in a while, mostly because you had sprained your ankle and then sprained your shoulder. The universe was keeping you from seeing her.
That is until you were healthy and ready to play once again, and just your luck, your first game back was against San Diego. Unfortunately for you, you completely forgot who you were playing against.
“What’s your problem today?” Rose asks as she tries to snap you out of your trance. “Hello? Y/N/N? Dude snap out of it you’re freaking me out.”
Rose gives you a light shove which immediately snaps you out of it.
“Sorry what?”
“Are you okay?” Rose asks worried. “You seem out of it.”
“Sorry, I slept pretty late.” You say with a yawn. “I was on the phone with Emily.”
“Sonny? What the hell she was awake? That liar.”
“Not sonny. Em.” You say and Rose realizes you were referring to your best friend Emily Fox.
“Oh right, duh. How is she?”
“She’s good. We were up talking about how we couldn’t sleep.”
“Wow you guys are so smart.” Rose says flicking your head and helping you get up. “Come on let’s go warm up.”
You followed Rose and headed out to the field.
Once on the field, you sat on the bench to fix your cleats, something kept bothering you, it had to be the socks again. It must be that.
You were so focused on trying to adjust your cleats you didn’t notice someone approaching you.
“Y/N?”
You flinched, you remembered that raspy voice so well. You never really forgot it. You looked up and there she was, the girl who made you feel everything in just one month. Love and heartbreak.
“Alex.”
You fixed your socks and cursed under your breath.
Whispering, hoping it wasn’t August. That would make this situation even worse. It would be much worse if it was a specific day.
You grabbed your phone and had to laugh. Of course it is.
August 7th.
“Meet me at our spot.” Alex whispered as she walked past you in the hotel lobby.
Ten minutes later, her hands were in your hair as your back was against the wall. The sound of cars and laughter coming from around the corner.
“We have to go Alex, it’s late.” You whispered.
“Not yet.” Alex whispered as she kissed your neck.
The words that Emily and Naomi had told you were no longer in your mind as you kissed Alex. The simplest touch from Alex was sending you into another dimension. You loved it.
“I didn’t know you were back on the roster, not that I’ve been- you know. So your ankle and shoulder are fine now I’m assuming.” Alex said clearing her throat, hoping you didn’t catch the little slip of her keeping tabs on you.
“Yeah. Fine.” You say as you stood up and started to walk away from Alex.
“Y/N/N, we can’t even have a conversation?” Alex asks as she grabbed your arm.
“We just had one, I don’t know if you’ve been up to date, I mean you clearly have, but I’ve been out for a while now. I need to warm up.”
Alex swallowed the knot in her throat. She was caught. The harsh tone in your voice had surprised her. She never knew you could be so cold, but she should’ve seen that coming.
“Now if you could so kindly let go of me I need to warm up.” You say as you yank your arm from her grip. “Thanks. Oh and don’t ever call me by my nickname again. You can’t call me that.”
Alex stood there dumbfounded, and watched as you did not go warm up, but rather walked to Naomi.
She watched as you embraced Naomi in the tightest hug, she missed that.
“Alex, your husband brought you your missing bag.” The San Diego wave trainer interrupted Alex’s thoughts.
“Huh? Oh yeah, thank you.” Alex says grabbing the bag from the trainer.
“I genuinely can’t believe she did that on the first date, I was just as shocked as Y/N/N. I told her she should definitely go out with her and for once she listened to me.” Naomi says laughing. “Thank god she did, she’s literally amazing and so fucking sweet.”
Alex could only hear so much, but that alone left her irritated. She remembered when she had you right beside her.
It was a short lived dream. A dream that Alex wished she could relive.
“What a beautiful view.” Alex says as she laid right beside you on the sand.
You rolled onto your side as you faced Alex, her eyes focused on you.
“What?” You ask, Alex reaches over and places her hand on your hip.
Scooting closer to you she placed a soft kiss on your forehead. Soft and gentle.
“I wish time could go by slower. I enjoy being with you, even if it is for one day.” Alex says softly, kissing your forehead once again.
The days you spent with Alex were amazing, but Naomi and Emily would once again try and have a talk with you.
“We’re just trying to help you avoid any pain or heartbreak. We love you and we don’t want you to get hurt.” Emily says, you knew she meant well.
“I appreciate the concern but we’re fine.” You say, looking at the two girls in front of you.
August had slipped away right in front of your eyes, and you could only curse at the thought of remembering that you thought she was yours. In reality she never was.
You sat on the bench for the game. Your eyes betrayed you as you could not help but look at Alex.
How could someone do such thing.
How can one forget everything that happened in one month.
A fling to her, but to you it was everything. To her it may have not been enough, but for you it was enough. Maybe that’s where you should have known it wasn’t going to work.
“What are you doing? I thought you said you had important things to do.” Naomi says, the look on her face didn’t show disappointment but her face said otherwise
“Uhhh I- you know.”
“I hope you didn’t cancel on us for a certain someone.”
“It was just in case she called.” You say defending yourself.
“Y/N/N.”
The hint of disappointment but also sadness in Naomi’s voice made you feel like a fool.
“I know she isn’t even mine, but I’m hoping…” You whisper not being able to finish the sentence.
“That what you two have can be different?” Naomi asks and you nod.
Alex was never yours.
After the game you took a shower in the locker rooms, trying to forget of everything. Of hopefully forgetting about Alex for one second.
You remembered the day you found out Alex had gotten married, it was quite a painful day. Heartbreaking.
“Y/N/N are you almost done? We’re trying to go eat.” Emily shouts.
At least you still had your friends.
You finished showering and changing into your clothes before coming out of the locker room.
“Took you long enough.” Emily says wrapping her arm around you. “What do you think about eating at a restaurant? I want fancy food tonight.”
“I’m up for that actually.” You say, which earns you a smile from Emily.
“Oh Naomi is coming by the way. She auto invited herself.”
“You act like she isn’t our best friend.” You say laughing.
Walking out of the stadium you see Naomi by your car. Hand on her hip as she tapped on the watch.
“Yeah yeah, get in the car.” You say unlocking your car.
As you got in your car and Naomi put music on, you looked to your side and just your luck, there she was.
With her husband.
Hands held and kissing, smiling, happy.
Your heart broke a little, you couldn’t lie, it did hurt. She used to kiss you. She was happy with you.
“Good morning.” Alex whispers, pulling you on top of her and pulling the blanket over you both.
“Well good morning to you.” You say as you sat up on her lap, hair messy and shirt somewhat on.
“You look breathtaking.” Alex says as she put her hands on your thighs.
“Yeah, okay. Sure.”
“You don’t have to believe me if you don’t want to, but to me you are.” Alex says, a big smile on her face.
“I’ve had such an amazing time with you this month, I hope it doesn’t end.” You say leaning down to kiss Alex.
“It won’t. I promise.” Alex says as she pulls you in closer. Flipping you over and pulling the covers over your entire bodies.
Oh, if only you knew.
“I hate August.” You say as you drove away from the stadium. “I need a big bottle of wine once we get to the restaurant.”
“Yup, got it.” Emily says.
She was never yours to begin with, but god, you were was hers.
August.
A cursed month. A month that would haunt you for the rest of your life.
My uncle and aunt are getting a divorce, but my little cousin will be staying with my aunt because my uncle was/is stupid as fuck. Anyway, my little cousin ran to my grandparents house (they live right next to each other) and he ran inside crying saying he didn’t want to leave.
I probably won’t ever see him again if I’m being honest. My poor babyyyy 💔
