Lee Jun-seok, the disgraced captain of the doomed Sewol ferry, and three other senior crew members pleaded not guilty to murder charges Tuesday at Gwangju District Court. They and 11 other members of the Sewol crew also face lesser charges in connection with the April 16 sinking of the ferry. At least 292 people perished in the accident, while 12 other passengers are still missing and presumed dead.

The trial is sure to be a wrenching experience for the families of the victims. All will be haunted by the same vexing question: how could Lee and his crew simply abandon the Sewol without trying harder – if at all – to save the lives of their passengers?
