“I’m wearing my own creations as I am Hanbok (traditional Korean clothing) tailor: traditional pattern Jeogori (top) and Baji (pants) in modern fabrics with traditional Korean shoes, tassels and ornaments called Norigae and Goreum and a modern version of the traditional Korean hat called a Ga. My outfit is inspired by 1840s European fashion pattern mixing.”

Ceramics by Heesoo Lee

Heesoo Lee is a ceramics artist, born and raised in Seoul, South of Korea and earned a BA in Art from Ewha University. From California, she relocated to Maui, where she established a thriving studio business.

Her sculptural vessels are created from porcelain and white stoneware and, after construction, are painted with layer upon layer of underglaze. Her painting medium of pigmented clay is so light that it often requires thirty or more layers to achieve the magnificent depth and realism for which she has become renowned, but the analogy to painting ends in the kiln.  During firing, the layers of underglaze can react with one another and change colors; at higher temperatures, yellows, reds, and oranges want to evaporate out. As a result, Lee’s handling of the ceramic material, though intricate and precise, is also marked by an intuitive use of imagery and surface treatments that offer reward through risk-taking.

Surreal and Minimalistic Illustrations from Henn Kim

Henn Kim is an illustrator from South Korea. She is the latest phenomenon in social networks. Her drawings, always in black and white, evoke themes of “beautiful dark twisted fantasy”, in her own words.

Her creations speak of love, new technologies, dreams and promises, within a minimalist poetic current, which implores the viewer’s thinking, catching and leaving him wounded. Her world is real, close to surrealism, she communicates with a simple and discreet lines to end up creating something big with facts from everyday life. She usually appears in the media of her country and her work is very close to the South Korean music industry. Thanks Gunter Gallery
