𝑐𝘩𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑛𝑜𝑡𝑒𝑠 :
born in 1870 in what was largely rural queens, new-york, june was raised by her father who slipped very slowly and quietly into alcoholism.
he was the doctor of their little town, and with any excess cash he made (when he wasn’t accepting livestock or produce as payment from the local farmers) went towards taking his daughter to baseball games.
from an early age, june accepted that her two great loves (medicine and baseball) would forever be barred from her. she was a woman, and that meant neither avenue was open to her.
she began to take an interest in her father’s medical textbooks early on, pulling gray’s anatomy from the shelf at twelve. by fourteen, her father’s dependency on drink cost him the life of a patient and he started teaching his daughter his practice in lieu of the overwhelming guilt he suffered afterward
showing her how to save lives reminded him why he loved his work, and they left the city seeking new communities that required doctoring
with towns emerging constantly (and constantly in need of medical staff) her father founded a small practice in valentine, a rural town in new hanover.
but june’s love for medicine never waned the way her father expected it to. and over time, as she grew more and more serious about inheriting the business he urged her away from it
as much as showing her how had healed him, her father never intended for her to make a career out of his profession. it simply was not possible for a woman to be a doctor. they fought constantly over her decision not to marry, and instead fought to be allowed to make house calls
on the night of a terrible snowstorn in 1899, jamison allowed his daughter to visit a nearby farm owned by sadie & jake adler.
trapped by the snow and ambushed by o’driscolls, june hid with sadie in the cellar and for days listened to the men that killed her husband make merry upstairs
june and sadie were rescued by the van der linde gang, but the farm was burned to the ground. she left with them for colter, and agreed to stay on with them to care for charles & john
realizing that this was the only way she’d ever be recognized as a competent surgeon in her own right, june allowed her father to think she had died in the storm & never returned to valentine.
