The story of the pigeon took an unexpected turn—or rather, found a new beginning. I had noticed right away that this was an unusual pigeon, unlike the ones you see in city parks. Yesterday, I got to talking with a neighbor, and he recalled seeing a kite and a hawk fighting in the sky (is that even possible?) around the same time the tiny squab first appeared among my ducks. It seems a bird of prey had snatched the chick but dropped it during the scuffle. The little guy was incredibly lucky not to land among the chickens, cats, or dogs. The ducks took him in, and he considers them his flock. After my previous video, the owner of a pigeon loft contacted me to say it was his Uzbek-breed pigeon, but—after seeing the post—he kindly gifted the bird to me.

The agreement also stipulated that the university would erect a permanent memorial naming the victims, and in June 2000, it complied by installing a small, curiously dated plaque labeled DEDICATED TO THE PATIENTS OF THE RADIATION EXPERIMENTATION, 1973-1974 and listing the names of over 170 patients.
