In a house, in a town, in the South East of England, a group of young adults met. What were they there for?
The 103A Show of course!!!
Weekend 2 started bright and early with crew on set at 8.30am. We set up a gazebo in the back garden and ran an extension lead out making our own little kitchen. Tea and croissants were served and the cast went in and out of makeup in between rehearsing and the crew setting up the cameras and lighting equipment. The sun was shining and the mood on set was optimistic about the filming, now that everyone knew each other the acting flowed better than it had before.
The first scene involved lots of wine and getting ready for the night out ahead, as well as including some background information about the characters. We want people to relate to these characters so it’s important that we build the relationship.
Afterwards the cast assembled in the garden to film the opening shots and have some pictures taken, and there was such a good atmosphere. The cast did some takes as themselves and with a quick costume change also filmed sections in character. Cast and crew sat out in the garden together eating lunch and joking about. That was the best thing about the filming of the first episode, the atmosphere was just brilliant. Then it was back into the living room for some more drinking scenes, we set the living room up with cards and alcohol and the cast set about acting drunk and playing drinking games. It was quite lovely listening to the cast shouting out and laughing along like they really were drunk.
The kitchen scene came next with nearly all the cast involved, the over the shoulder shot of Mark (aka Josh) into the kitchen is especially effective. The scenes were getting easier to shoot as the day went on, as everyone became more comfortable and actually by the time the last scene rolled round with just Jezmae (aka Alex) and Ryan (aka Conrad) it seemed a shame to go home when we were all having such a laugh. Unfortunately the alcohol on set was not for general consumption due to continuity so we all packed up and went to get our beauty sleep for the following day.
The sun was beaming down on the second day as everyone arrived on time and went into makeup, and were transformed into hung-over wrecks. We did the first of the behind the scenes interviews and Toby (aka Harry) and Ryan (aka Conrad) made it very clear that they were only wearing makeup for the hung-over scene! Filming started for the day and the blackout windows helped create the illusion that the characters were just returning from the party, drunk and with shock revelations on their hands. Ryan (aka Conrad) kept making people laugh before they said their lines but it helped add to the drunken atmosphere.
The girls were next setting the scene for the night ahead, their conversation involved background of what the premise of the show is really about, that it is hard for University leavers to get a job. The final scene of the day was fun but a bit emotional as it was the last one that everyone was in for Episode 1, but a perfect one to shoot because of that. The cast sprawled over the sofa, it was incredibly realistic, and they all looked like they had a rough night. Brownies and cups of tea were passed round throughout the scene to keep spirits up and inappropriate jokes flew across the room. As the last line of the script was read a cheer went up. It was quite said saying goodbye to some of the cast, we wouldn’t see each other for a while, or at least until the launch party, but everyone really felt like a friend you didn’t want to lose.
The edit had already started, screening dates were set and PR was gathering resources to get the word out. 103A really was underway….
