Why do people seek out divinations? Tarot readings? Psychics? is the unknown of our future so terrifying that the slightest glimpse into it, charade or not, puts us at ease?
The depiction of the stars, your sign, the time and date of your birth all intertwining into a singular quote for you to mold your feelings to.
Is religion being forgone for the presence of individualistic replies? a fate that feels tailored to you and no one else.Â
A card of death here, mercury in retrograde there. Feeling this euphoric entrapment of importance when it aligns with you.
Have we morphed the old ways of tarots and palm readings, and done what we do best? Encircled them in a hanging noose of profit - making sure we squeeze every inch of its capitalistic valueÂ
I guess what I am asking is why can i get my fortune read through a screen? Or by email? Is the untold, the unknown and the unseen so frightening that emptying the last of my pockets to an etsy witch worth it?
Interestingly enough, psychic readings are against some religions. Some claiming them as dark magic and others viewing anything other than blind faith into the future as blasphemy.
And yet, isn't that what humans have always chased? Belonging? Surety that things will be okay? The creation of religions, gods and worship. A way to tether yourself to something bigger, something sure, protection.
Do Tarot and readings offer a glimpse into another world, one that does not revolve around a singular book or god? One, instead, in the hands of a middle aged women with acrylics pulling out decks from a card or rubbing a glass ball.Â
Right or wrong who knows; some may do it as a ruse and other as respite.Â
All this to admit I will never skip a 'random reading' that has found me on tiktok, or some woman on the internet claiming she can tell me when I will meet my soulmate. Why? Well for the exact reasons stated above.. Why not? Why not believe in the divinations of a stranger when they bring me something that everyone chases; comfort.
