Talita’s expressions are… usually misinterpreted by other centaurs.

Tightening the lips and showing teeth is typically an aggression display, and wide open eyes are typically a shock reaction. She also barely moves her trunk except for speech direction (when she isn’t mumbling into her chin). More on centaur alien facial expressions here.

Talita is a weird fringe case with very human habits, so here’s some examples of more typical centaur alien facial expressions and gestures of affection. Most noticeable is the half lidded eyes being a relaxed signal, despite kind of appearing kind of “angry” to humans. Talita’s use of her white nictitating membranes to imitate human eye and eyebrow movement is unique to her, other centaurs basically only use it for eye protection and cleaning.

Some other facial signals of note: A trunk gently curved up with relaxed lips is a classic “smile,” and tightening lips and/or showing teeth is a signal of discomfort or aggression. “Cobra“ positioning of the trunk with some degree of flattening it against the face is an aggressive snarl, essentially a way of saying “I am ready to bite you.” Shivering and chattering/involuntarily snapping teeth is a signal of extreme discomfort or “crying.” Feathers raising on the neck is a general excitement response with context dependent meaning. Feathers bristling on the face is an emotional arousal response (positive or negative) similar to blushing!
