The Scouting Legion makes use of the Signal Flare during their expeditions beyond the Walls. The Long-Range Scouting Formation, developed by Commander Erwin Smith, expands the use of the Signal Flare by incorporating a series of colors that pertain to their particular mission: Red signifies the presence of a Titan, Black equates to the siting of an Aberrant, Purple emphasizes an emergency, Blue flares signal an order to retreat, and Yellow lets everyone know that the mission has been terminated, be it successfully or failed. Lastly, the Green smoke is fired by the Commander in one direction to indicate a change in direction and is then repeated by the relay soldiers.
