I think it's really cool how you mention lesser-known Greek Goddesses like Nike, Themis and Dike in Absolute Wonder Woman. Will you be exploring Diana's relationship with them more?
I hope so, but panel-time is precious and I think we all know the existing supporting cast needs love. <3
Congrats on the hugo nom, kelly!
Thank you so much!
Hi! I am loving Absolute Wonder Woman. It is the story I am most excited to read each month. I was wondering if Etta and Gia might get a bigger role somewhere down the line; I love Etta whenever she appears in non-Absolute comics, but she's been very background in AWW. I would love to see her and Gia enter the foreground!
We will definitely be showing more of what they’ve been up to in the coming issues. 19, 21, and 22 all have some focus on them -- as will the new arc that starts with issue 23. I hope you enjoy!
As shown in Absolute Wonder Woman #15, does Veronica Cale buy Wonder Woman merch just to destroy it and throw it in the trash? That's so hilariously petty!🤣
Haha. I think probably she has enough connections that she gets sent the prototypes and samples. Her assistant probably unboxed all that for her and then high-tailed it so as not to be around when she found it. ;D
hello kelly! i hope youre doing well today
i was discussing the latest ab!ww issue (#18) with my coworker and noticed something about giovanni and his speech pattern
when we see things from his perspective, hes speaking forward, but then also from his perspective later, diana says his name backwards, and his speech is perceived as backwards outside his perspective.
was that intentional? does he interpret speech backwards and speak backwards without that specific intent? or did diana happen to say his name backwards in that moment?
It should be (and hopefully we’ve been consistent with this as much as possible) -- that when Giovanni hears himself, he hears himself normally -- forward for speaking and backwards for spell text.
But what he’s experiencing is some kind of hallucination -- believing he’s in a sort of hell/limbo and on fire -- surrounded by “demons and fiends” that have or have killed his daughter who he’s eternally searching for. So Diana is speaking normally and it’s just translating wrong for him -- possibly because he clocks Diana as a magic user, despite the hallucination -- and thus he perceives her doing magic on him as backwards text since that’s a way he knows magic works.
We’ll get a bit more clarification in 19 and 20...but more than that, we’ll need an arc for them...or a spin off. lol.
Hello, Ms.Thompson! I want to congratulate you fir yet another amazing and incredibke issue on AWW! The plot twist of Giovanni apoearing was definitly something that git me shocked! But when Cale started mentioning it would be a male user of the mystical arts, I got mysemf thinking it would be Klarion. I wanted to ask if you would be down to writte him or maybe more of the dc magic users down the line? Jinx, Enchantress, Raven, etc! Ty for your amazing stories again!
I’m interested in pretty much all the DC magic users, especially as I’ve been doing so much magic stuff with Diana, Circe, and now Zatanna and now Zatara.
But a lot of the DC characters -- and I think probably disproportionately DC Magic characters -- have a lot of questions you have to ask before you know you can fold them in.
Raven is a great example. She’s from another reality...so are you doing that? What does that mean for the Absolute Universe as a whole? Do other dimensions exist and are characters from those worlds able to access this world? Etc. And those aren’t questions for one book, those are question for the room -- as they affect the world of Absolute DC and not just an individual book.
So in that case many people need to throw in thoughts on that and a decision is likely more made by committee -- which is not necessarily a bad thing -- I know saying that has a dreaded implication -- but a diverse group of creators is more often than not a great thing imo.
Anyway, so you have to do that process for pretty much anyone significant that you want to bring in. And if that character has a particularly messy or specific context that we haven’t addressed yet, that needs to be considered and planned for. But it shouldn’t be seen as a negative thing -- a lot of those contexts are the very things that create all new threads and possibilities for the expanding the line -- but it all has to be figured out and that means some characters with more complex contexts (something a lot of the magic characters share) take a bit more time to get right.
shot in the dark here but i need to know. is absolute angle man a possibility?
It’s possible...but I confess it’s not on my immediate agenda as the next...mmm...I think we’re roughly plotted out through about issue 34? But maybe after that? You never know! I HAVE found a really fun angle on another fun/bizarre/old-school character. So I’ll keep him in mind. :D
I had a question about absolute Diana's origin. Would you say it was all of the Goddesses that gave life and their powers to Diana from the clay Hippolyta molded (à la Perez's post-crisis origin) or just one single Goddess like Aphrodite or Hera, like in other stories? I like that Diana could get each of her powers from the associated Goddesses, like Hera giving her invulnerability since she is the protector of women, Artemis giving her enhanced senses and the ability to talk to animals, and so on.
Yes. We haven’t really gotten to a point where that gets spelled out, but there are some big hints to that effect in this current arc with Aphrodite (issue 19 especially).
But yes, the idea is that each of Diana’s six patron goddesses (Hecate, Artemis, Athena, Aphrodite, Demeter, Hestia, and Hera) gave a bit of themselves to her creation.
Hi! I hope you are doing well! I just received my copy of the second tpb of absolute Wonder Woman and I'm loving it so much! I know it's not been announced yet, but I was wondering which issues the 3rd volume will have? Will it include the annual and the Absolute Batman crossover? Thank you!
Hey. Thanks so much!
I believe the 3rd volume is 15-20 and the Annual.
I think the original plan was to possibly include the Batman Crossover Issue -- but because we ended up doing those more as individual one-shots and not a typical “2-Part Story” I don’t believe it will be included (nor do I believe AWW will be included in the Batman volume). Hope that helps!
Hi Ms. Thompson! I’m making a thread on twitter about female comic creators who have contributed to Carol Danvers for women’s month (you’re one of my favorites), and I can only find one picture of you (the selfie that’s your icon on here on tumblr). Are there any other pictures of yourself you want out there, or are you happy with just the one?
Hey.
Thanks for including me!
There are very few photos of me on the internet and yes, that is indeed by design. :D
That one that’s everywhere is the one I prefer. There are a couple others out there -- although a quick google search only revealed one -- and several people/sites that think I’m Joelle Jones -- which is wildly flattering as she is stunning (I am sorry Joelle, I WISH your photos were mine). Anyway, this one is still out there and IS me, but A) like the other “good” photo it’s very dated and B) I stopped using it pretty early on in my career because I worried it would be seen as suggestive/too suggestive, which is obviously not what I’m aiming for. Anyway, that one is here: https://previewsworld.com/Article/206389-Marvel-Announces-Exclusive-Agreement-with-Kelly-Thompson
Thanks again for including me!
Hi Ms. Thompson! I'm absolutely obsessed with AWW, & I had a question about the annual. I recognize Crimson Centipede & Mayfly, but some people are saying the other guys Diana fights in the montage are Human Tank & Antonio Sazia. Are those who those cameos are?
Yup, those are all correct!
Glad you’re enjoying the book! <3
Hi Ms. Thompson! Thank you for yet another brilliant issue of Absolute Wonder Woman! I'm so excited to see what comes next! I was wondering with the confirmation that one of the prisoners in area 41 is Cuca, does this mean we might see Yara Flor?
I know it’s disappointing to a lot of people, but nobody should expect any other famous Amazons to show up anytime soon -- Donna, Yara, Nubia, Phillipus, Artemis, etc. Diana IS cut off from her family and heritage, that’s baked into the concept of this world and this Diana and we should feel that, because it’s a real loss. Giving her back those people/things/places too much undercuts that loss.
What do you think of WonderMan?
I haven’t had a chance to check it out yet, but I think it looks really interesting and fun.
Any chance you're gonna be a guest at Megacon?
No, I’m sorry. I don’t actually do cons. :(
Any chance we might get Diana plushies and other Absolute Wonder Woman merch?
Gods I hope so!
I have a question about the different colored lassos and their abilities; do they correspond with the various different Wonder Women both past and present from the main dcu?
Like Green (Shapeshifting) - Peng Deilan
Red - (burning the sinful) maybe Artemis or Cassie Sandsmark
Blue - (unknown) Donna Troy?
No, the only connection the lassos have to the other lassos/other world is me trying to avoid them being the same color of Diana’s main universe lassos at a time when that was already being highlighted in the main book (the lassos of fate -- gold/black/silver). Obviously we wanted to stay away from that to both A) make sure we’re doing our own thing and B) to not crowd them more than necessary.
It was a little bit deliberate and a little bit good luck that Nemesis made a lot of sense to be red (which was obviously perfect for Diana’s whole vibe), and that we were using greenish tones to represent Circe and Diana’s magic and thus made a ton of sense for Sacrifice the lasso of transmogrification. Troika is blue in part because it is a Hecate driven lasso -- the moon/the crossroads/night/witchcraft/etc.
The Troika is more about it being “three” than anything connected to Donna -- I’m sorry, I know that disappoints Donna fans -- but it’s the truth.
Expect to learn more about The Troika in The Season of The Witch arc starting in January!
Seems like it's time to re-post this with the debut of The Troika on the ABSOLUTE WONDER WOMAN #19 (MAR) cover release and all the Donna discussion raising its head again.
Please don't expect Donna, guys, or you're going to be disappointed. We're not trying to Rickroll anyone...The Troika lasso has nothing to do with Donna Troy.
