We've hit the end of Quaranthon!

Thank you so much to everyone who signed up and participated. We hope you guys had a great time! We ended up with eighteen (that's 18!) new 1988 stories out of this - a few of which still have chapters forthcoming.

We want to extend a special thank you to all of our beta readers; you guys are the unsung heroes that make fests like this work. We would be a poorer community without your help.

Summary: Patrick’s pretty happy with the life he has living in Chicago and being part of an Original Six hockey team. He’s got three Stanley Cups under his belt, enough money to take care of his loved ones, and some epic casual sex on the side with his captain. He’s living the high life. He wouldn’t change a thing.

Except that one day he ends up pregnant, and the next he’s married to Jonny to avoid a scandal, and suddenly his easygoing existence is a hell of a lot more complicated.

Dump and Chase

When Patrick loses hockey, he loses a part of himself with it. He might be running away from his old life by moving to a cabin in the Canadian woods, but the presence of his new neighbor helps.

“What made you come here out of all the places you could have chosen?”

Patrick sighs. It’s not like he chose this place. Once he made up his mind about leaving Chicago and Buffalo, he told his agent to buy the first place he could find away from civilization. He only saw a handful of pictures of the cabin and its surroundings before arriving. So, it’s mostly a coincidence that he ended up here. Or maybe it’s fate, but he’s not so sure he believes in any of those things anymore.

“I just wanted to get away,” he says slowly. “Didn’t matter where to, really.”

“Sounds dramatic.” Jonny opens his eyes, using one hand to shield them from the sun, which looks ridiculous when his baseball cap sits backwards on his head.

Patrick rolls his eyes, a smile tugging on the corner of his lips. “It wasn’t that deep,” he says after a few seconds.

“Keep complaining this much I won’t suck you off anymore,” Patrick adds, biting his lip to keep from forming a flirty grin. Jonny chuckles, more breath than anything else. He’s tired, Patrick can tell, but he emerges more and more from beneath the satin sheets, until they pool around his hip bone and Patrick gets to admire Jonny. 

Jonny, with the left side of his mouth quirking up into a smirk. Jonny, and his golden skin color despite the freezing temperatures of Chicago winters. Jonny, with his strong shoulders and his toned abs and lemon shampoo smelling hair, soft. 

Jonny, the man that Patrick loves so, so much.

Patrick has always hated having a twin.

Sure, when they were little it was all fun and games: playing pranks on their parents and sisters and teachers, pretending to be the other twin and switching places in the middle of the school day to see if anyone noticed. Sometimes they got away with it; most of the time they didn’t. Patrick and Danny are just too different to fool anyone.

The differences between them grew as they got older. Patrick didn’t dislike his brother. Not at first, anyway. They shared the same hobbies, had the same friends, were in the same classes. But Danny was better. At everything. No matter what they did, he always left Patrick in his shadow. Band? Danny was first chair and could play practically any instrument, while Patrick had to practice for hours just to sound passable. He dropped out pretty quick. School? Danny had straight A’s without even trying, while Patrick studied for hours. Dating? Guys and girls alike followed Danny around like he was made of some kind of love potion, and he soaked up the attention like a sponge. As Patrick drew into himself, became shy and quiet and focused on his hockey, Danny’s personality grew and grew and grew until he took up every inch of space in any room he entered. Patrick had to retreat, or risk being overtaken.

They head back to the water. Maddy tries to wriggle out of her father’s hands to get to them when she spots them, but she can’t swim, so Sharpy walks her through the water while she doggy paddles her way over. When she’s close enough, Jonny scoops her up and tosses her in the air, catching her under the armpits before she can tumble into the water. 

She shrieks, giggling when she’s safe in his arms again, and pats at his face. “Goo’ job.” She says, then sticks her slobbery, salt-water fingers into his mouth. Jonny’s so surprised that he inhales all of that and has to hold her away as he coughs and gags into the water. Maddy only laughs at him. 

Patrick laughs at him, too, but then a wave comes and sweeps him under. Jonny thinks he got what he deserved. 

(Jonny and the Sharps take a trip to Charleston, South Carolina in the wake of the 2012 playoff ejection. There, Jonny meets Patrick Kane, a marine biologist working at the aquarium who has no business looking that hot while pulling plastic from a sea turtle’s mouth.)
