I could write an entire essay about the power dynamics in Heated Rivalry, but if I did, there would be an entire sub-category devoted to Ilya giving orders that double as temperature checks.

The times Shane pushes back playfully ("No, you come here,") vs. the times he genuinely pushes back because he doesn't feel comfortable or secure ("You suck my dick," in the awards ceremony bathroom, and "There are a lot of windows," afterward in the hotel);

The times Shane doesn't push back at all (after "Get on your knees,") when Ilya clearly expected playful teasing in return, and the times Ilya's looking for reassurance and security himself ("Glasses on,").

I love the explicit consent checks, they're so important, but I also love that behind so many orders for Shane to take his clothes off, there's a silent, "This is okay?" behind it.

Heated Rivalry is as faithful an adaptation I’ve ever seen meaning: absolutely Jacob made great changes/additions and he deserves that credit but the overwhelming (OVERWHELMING!!!!) majority of the dialogue came directly from the book and Rachel Reid. Even a lot of the looks/inner thoughts are literally in the book, right there in black and white. I’m not quite sure why her presence is getting erased but I have my suspicions.

Are there things about The Long Game that I hope Jacob changes or makes additions to that I didn’t love? Sure. I like the subtle things that changed in Season 1 and I’m sure I will love those in Season 2. But for all the praise that Jacob gets and deserves, let’s not forget the actual author who created this world and again…almost ALL of the iconic dialogue/catchphrases/parallels.
